nforce2 & 5000
17.02.05 at 04:20:27

well i put in a nforce2 board to test my v5000 in because i was getting some little dots on the start button and a few other places and  thought maybe the via 266a chip was having a problem, but the dots are back, otherwise board seems to be working fine, when i went to gamma742's house we tested the board and no dots at all but we were using the last 3dfx driver for 2000, i use the latest amigamerlin driver, i cant see why my card would have a problem with that driver, my v5500 loved it too piece on the via chip board. just thought id ask if anyone who has one of the agp4 cards has had the problem, ty, VDX

Actually We tested on the last whql drivers under Win98SE, no graphical anomalies.

Did you try it with these Win2K drivers 08 Nov 2000 3dfx Voodoo4/5 V1.04.00 6742k ZIP

Did you try forcing the Installation via the Device Manager ?
IMHO the error comes from the missing entry for the Voodoo5 5000 in the .inf, which will cause Win2000 to deny automatic installation.

But forcing the Driver should still be possible, then you'll have to see how well it works.

yes that would be an option id did that with my Voodoo4 4500 AGP , it worked fine on my ASUS A7N8X2.0 Deluxe, it had the nForce2 Ultra chip, I used Win 2K pro with the latest Amiga drivers 3.0XP it was then, the 4500 AGP also ran fine in my 2 year leter A64 3200+ with nForce3 250GB chipset, but i had to force the installation with the via the Device manager, I always had a rotten time with 3dfx cards on nVidia chipsets. VIA is the better way to go of Intel Sis or AMD, they work better., Though VIA KT333 is the best chipset choice for Voodoo AGP x2 and x4 imho.

But @ VDX, what is your Bios setting with the Voodoo5 5000 AGP? did you set the card at AGP x2 or AGP x4?
because it also can be an issue that the AGP x4 doesn't work well with the card it's self, this is a known factor of the 5000 AGP cards.

well i added it to the inf file and then the driver downloaded fine which was nice but still the damn dots, when i take this card out  the v5500 no dots, at gamma's house there were no dots with 98, maybe its a 2000 problem with this card? there are a couple more of these cards around somewhere right, anyone in this forum?

p.s. otherwise the cards works great in the nforce2 board, if they coulda lasted just a few more months think of all the agp4x v5500 & v5000 cards there would be instead of just a few........so far.

I would not run the board on a modern chipset- Just because it has the AGP x 4 connector doesn't mean 3dfx has the proper setting in the cards bios and voltage regulation for the later chipsets.

I would bet this is why Oscars 5500 AGP x 4 is dead after running it on a i865 board.

Good point! The machine that we tested it in @ my place was a PIII 800 133 FSB with the MSI 815 PRO ver 1 with the 815 chipset of course. Anyone know if that's only AGP X 2 or 4 ?? I was going to fire it up on the ECS K7 2000+ but didn't have a spare IDE H.D.D. laying around.

Pretty much any P3 platform is fairly safe, when Intel went  to P4 things get bad.

hmm, i think its the card and a windows 2000 issue, i had the poblem before i went to gamma's house but i had it a via mobo that was o/ced, at gamma's card didnt have the dots at all on 98, back at my house with same mobo(via 266a) i set to default and still the dots, put in 5500 and no dots, put the 5000 in the nforce2 mobo and again dots, put a 4500 in the nforce2 mobo no dots, this tells me its something to do with this card and maybe AMD or windows 2000, ill use my 4500L card for now since i dont want to burn it out, no dots in games and card runs fine and cooler than my 5500 but its a shame if i cant use it in the agp4x, to me its a wall piece unless i can figure this out, all i have is 2000 but ill try and get 98se.......and for bios its 1.15

What ever you do, don't flash the BIOS. The card looked great on a PIII with 98SE.

It's too rare of a card to experiment with IMO.

hay VDX if it does work with AGP x4 I think a benchmark with UT 1999 Game Of The Year would be nice , considering that your board has the nForce2 Ultra chipset, I'm just wondering how FXAA x4 will perfom on a dual channel based chipset.

Anyway the only card that really works in AGP x4 mode is the Voodoo4 4500 AGP , I don't know about the Daytona cards though.

And I'm not to sure about that- On my Epox board the AGP modes are user adjustable and when a 4500 is installed the 4x option is greyed out.

I think the 4500 is capable of working in a 4x AGP board but 3dfx never refined the bios/hardware to run in that mode. After all the VSA-100 series was a make-do part till Rampage was released.

I'll try a few different 4500 revisions and check.
