Title: Odd Windows Media Problem
Post by FalconFly on 23.01.06 at 23:35:55
I'm still using the (only) usable Media Player : V6.4, has all Codecs but since recently one Problem :

It plays those sucky .wmv Files only in slowmotion...
Since .wmv has pested the Internet like a disease, I'd still like to be able to playback at correct speed though.

Anyone knows how to fix that or has an original MP 6.4 Download for Win2000 ?
(Already tried MP Classic 6.4.x, didn't help)

PS.
When I use other Players, I can accelerate Video playback, but Audio remains on Slowmotion.

maybe a codec conflict
or the wmv s are a newer version

i think the game rome total war required some codec updates for wmv i`ll have a look , i think it was something  like the old direct media type file

this file wmfdist.exe
must be like an extra runtime file

winmedia format 9
as well as winmedia 9 codec

Ha, at least that fixed the Windows Audio 9.1 Problem ;)

Problem remains : Windows Video V8 missing

(am I the only one hating M$ for the lame codec chaos? Media Player claims "no appropriate Decoding found" after querying the M$ server)

--- edit ---
Installing wmpcdcs8.exe gives me Windows Video V8 codec and now the Video shows, but the slowmotion problems occurs again :p

Best darn media player there is. Plays every format!

maybe the  9 codec will fix it

win codec server is useless

i used to get a no codec message , then the video started to play ( funny if i`ve havent got the codec !)

still i think the newer ati drivers are doing some wierd things with video play back on the 9800 pro
( spontaniously minimising in game video !)
and their wmv acceleration might be a bit buggy

Trying the VideoLAN Player in a moment.

What bugs me the most, is that folks (either by accident, due to being lazy or just unknowingly) choose the worst, lowest quality and most proprietary Codec on earth (WMV) for their Videos.

I mean it's okayish for live streaming and low bitrates, but it's by far the worst I've ever seen for Video Quality :p

-- edit --
The VideoLAN Player plays the Video normal, but Audio is still slowmotion and skips forward as it falls behind (out of sync)

I think the Installation of DirectX 9.0d (came with one of the latest Games, labeled 9.0c but contains some DX10 releasable parts) may have caused it, or the latest ATI Driver (although I'm using Omega this time)

U are kidding right?

I might have gotten a 2% sucess on those M$ servers so far

yeah i had some major wierd issues with the 5.8 cats
scaled back to 5.5 , plus i don`t like that control centre thing much ! plus u lose some backward compatibility
medal of honor won`t run after 5.5 or 5.6

wmvhd (high definition) pretty good
beats the run of the mill Dvd

i`ve found kazaa lite codec pack (don`t no if its a legit pack or not ) to be very good
as long as u read the instructions , nimo , and crystal slow the system (like spyware)

haven`t come into contact with any `DX10 releasable parts' yet ,

Have you tried closing all other unneccessary running processes?

Newest WMV usually ONLY plays properly with the newest media player... >:(

...something about how the format works? (unknown?) ???

Yeah, that's probably it.

I just found it odd that Video 9.1 Codec runs fine while the 8.0 Audio Codecs apparently drags the Replay down.

Anyway, I tried everything and it doesn't work (remains odd why it worked fine 2 weeks ago).

btw, is there any useful Freeware that can convert those .wmv Videos back into "normal" Videos ? That would take some time but certainly solve all those wicked Problems (would be neat having them all in DivX or XVid)

I use the Media Player 6.4 Codec package at the bottom of this page to reduce reliance on the codec server:

Dangit, doesn't work either (installs fine but the affected Videos still run only in SlowMo :/ )
