Who collects 3dfx cards here and what do you have? I tend to look for unique cards myself and not pick up duplicates.

I.E. I have a have a bunch of V2's but they are all different makes- Metabyte, Joytech, STB, Orchid, etc.

I'll work on my list and post it later today.

Well, I am an avid collector myself, although not limited to 3dfx Cards :)

If you wish, I will build a list of 3dfx Items in stock (takes some time) and edit this Post accordingly.

The Card itself is nothing special, but it was owned by a 3dfx employee, and carries the typical little handwritten piece of paper attached to the Card. Unfortunately, the Card is damaged beyond repair :( (maybe someone used it in an 4x/8x AGP port.

Well, we all know ebay is our best source to acquire cards for our collections, but does anyone know of any other sources where we can find cards and buy them?

It may be hard to believe, but ALOT of retailers still have some 3dfx cards left, you won't find anything *rare* there but an occasional voodoo4500pci or a 5500pci may pop up

hmm, i just have 25 cards, nothing different except my 4500L card, my evilking voodoo2 boxed and my promo boxed v3 2000(i think) with the "not for resale" sticker on it ;)

My week is starting out rather well- I scored a boxed Metabyte Banshee Vengeance, and this morning a Pure3d II boxed with EVERYTHING including the Q2 mission pack disc!

Over the weekend I also scored a *new* Maxigamer V2 with heatsink and 110 mhz ram to SLI with my other.

Well I got in touch with DataPath.
I spoke to a guy called Wolfgang (naturally  ;)) in Germany.
He gave me a quote which was pushing the limit, but didn't answer my question about whether the cards come retail boxed with driver CD's, manuals and cables.

I then got an e-mail from Kay @ the UK DataPath branch, confirming if I want to pay be Credit Card for this item!?!  :o A little direct, don't you think.
I asked her the same question and she confirmed that the card is OEM and standalone (no box, cables, CD's, manuals, paperwork, ZIP!)

She quoted me £78!  :o (Do the math in your own currency, you will be shocked) for the Quantum 50-4220.

So I told her to keep the card (to collect dust in some warehouse for 10 - 15 years before it's binned!)

The point is, they have had no interest in these items for a long while, you can tell by their eagerness to get me to buy it!
They charge such a high price that no-one will pay, only for the item to rot on some warehouse shelf until it gets scrapped!
Why not just reduce it at an affordable rate, so they can make a quick sale on them and reduce thier stock, rather than let their back-stock get congested!  >:(

I think they got catched on the 'wrong foot' when all of a sudden they received dozens of Requests for their remaining Quantum3D stock (all selling for an initial 75 Euro/piece, regardless of model)

Now that they've realized what they're selling (and their stocks reduced to a small remaining amount of Cards), they're playing the typical market's Game of demand vs. offer.

Although arguably, they sure kept those Cards mainly because they once intended to sell them for alot more than what they charge now.

Amusing- I had been in contact with Wolfgang and he ended up getting me in contact with Kay. She quoted me a price that was much higher then Wolfgangs.

I fired back Wolfgang's price was better and it's been brought to my attention that the cards come with nothing. I stated they need to drop the price a bit, if I wanted a loose card with nothing I could purchase one from ebay for a fraction of the cost.

All Kay told me was that they bought them in bulk from Quantum and have a large amount of them to sell.
Because they came in bulk, the cards are standalone.

Very cool! Early box art and product? I know when the V3 was first announced the low end was suppose to be a 125 mhz part, which did show up in some Compaq computers with no heatsinks!

Also on display is my other Canopus card a Pure3d II LX on the right, they work together sweet in SLI mode!

They do radiate some heat though, 110F running a demo loop! I threw a fan on the pair of them just to be safe, 86F is much better.

Sometimes I think I paid to much ($25) but then again how often to do you find a mint boxed Canopus Pure3d II card with everything? Spent my cash worse ways ;-)

Question- Have you tried powering up the card? Is it clearly just a display card or does it have some 2d function?

It is a Display Card only, and you can actually see that the PCB isn't remotely finished.

As far as I know, at that time 3dfx simply didn't have a V5-6000 design that was able to work at all yet, hence they came up with a 'quick & dirty' "Demo-Design", so they at least had something to show off.

The 2x2 design proved to be impossible to realize later.

The back of the Card is actually really smooth and clean, with almost nothing on it on one side.

Well 3 cards is a start! I started with 1 card only 7 months ago!  :) I've not done too bad since then, but everyone had to start with 1 card at sometime! Even Patience! (Allthough that must have been a LONG time ago, as you have all seen the rack of cards she has now, bless her!) ;)

I collects as good as I can... I have understood ebay completely and I have had a feeling that the net is unsecure for dealing with money and stuff. Well, I hope that I can start buying stuff there soon.

For now I have to buy stuff in the shops here in Sweden - it can be quite hard... I bought a cmputer for 2-3 years ago with a Voodoo 5 5500 and it worked good until the motherboard broke and it got some sort of acid on it - from the motherboard. Strange but true. In fact it worked good after that too but it got exchganged for a Geforce FX 5600...

However - a few days ago in my local computershop here in my town, very small, I found that they were selling out Voodoos and I took my bike and rided down to it.

I was prepared for rodinary V5s und V4s but what i first saw was a Voodoo 3 2000 boxed - I bought it directly. After that it was time for searching - it was a sell out soo all the cards was bulkpackaged in piles. I found v5s and v4s and after a bit more searching I found some v2s... Bought quite alot..

Soo - my collection now is:

2 Techworks Power3d2
1 Voodoo 3 2000 AGP
1 Voodoo 4 4500
4 Voodoo 5 5500

I can buy more cards but not many different. It was some older edition of a V4 - with the 3dfx logo on the fans but I thought it was more nice with many v5s...

However - they were cheap - very cheap! You got 2 cards for 7$ and they had many many many. All were unused bulk, except the V3, but you could get a driver cd and manual... Also the V2s had a cable in their packages...

It were nice to be in heaven for a while...

Don't  worry to much but buy with prudence- In the years I have been doing deals over the 'net I have been only ripped once and that was through a *business transaction through my company from a customer* and after much screaming got Paypal to refund my funds.

If making a purchase through Ebay in general it's best to avoid sellers with zero feedback or a fair amount of negitive feeedback.

However everyone starts with zero feedback- If you must buy in such a case make sure it's an amount you can afford to loose! Some great deals can be found this way because the other buyers will tend to avoid the seller as well. So far I have done very well.

Don't get into a bidding war with another buyer if they have zero feedback, chances are they are a buddy of the seller looking to run the price up or just some dirtbag with a temp ebay id looking to spoil things for everyone else.

Just walk away in that case, the same cards will show up in time unless it is something really rare then you have to decide how bad you want it and take the risk.

I'm just waiting on my Helios 3D Rush on it's way from the Netherlands.  You'll understand my reasoning for waiting to take some snaps, because this is a beauty and in brand new condition!  ;D

Apart from that, I'm not waiting on anything else at the moment so I will get them shots up as soon as it arrives!

I suggest we start a new topic with posts of only the lists of cards the collectors (or other members) have.

Each member has one post to update, with their current list of cards. They keep coming back and adding to that ONE post when they get new cards! Simple.

The usual suspects (admins: FalconFly, Patience and Procerus (where the hell is he?)) monitor the posts made by each member.

How does that sound? ::)

Yep, a full-scale series of high quality Imagery of entire Collections sure would break the bounds of the normal Forum.

If the owner of the respective Collection was to offer high-quality Imagery and suffient people join in, we could one day mix it all together on the Archive's Main page however.

That in turn could easily eat up some 100MB (or more) of precious Server space however, so even if we do it, it will have to be postponed for a month or two...
Then I wouldn't mind hosting the entire Images, sort of a 'open for all' Collectors shelf who seek a little showcasing ;)

I hope to have mine up next month on my site- This month is impossible for me to do, due to getting my car (s) ready for a major cross country trip to a yearly get together with a bunch of other turbo Chrysler nutcases.

IMHO, we should

- un-sticky this Post, that can then receive as many inputs as desired

In a way I'm more excited about the V3 card, while having the 6k finally is nice and all there seems to be no shortage of them about, know what I mean? If you want one bad enough all you have to do is wait for one to show up on ebay and throw more cash down then the other guy. Since I have plenty of cash at the moment due selling off extras from my 20 year collection of car parts on ebay, getting a v6k wasn't that challenging.

After all they did make over a thousand or so V6k's, compared to the eight of the little V3 card shown  ;D

Not putting down the v6k... you won't be able to pry it out of my fingers for any amount of money... I just enjoy the challenge of the chase and finding the cards as much as owning these pieces of history.

Lady luck tapped me on the shoulder this week, perhaps next week will be your turn, beware though she is a fickle one ;-)

that's the type I recieved wednesday August 12 2004, the funny thing is it does not even look like a normal Voodoo3 3000 PCI. It looks moor like the PCB of a Velocity 200 16MB.  I also see that it is possible to ad memory to the board for a total of 32MB! that for a V3 , would be nice.  :P

Seemed to, and the drivers worked with no problems.

I didn't benchmark the card to see if there was a performace difference but it seemed to running as fast as any other V3-2000.

I have an Alpha and Beta board also in my collection, I'm sure there are other unique V3 boards about.

This was done just to see how small the PCB could be made since it makes up a good percent of the cards expence.

26-99 is the date, 600-0076-01 is the PCB board number.

Looks like a SGRAM V3-3000, might be a Compaq computer part as that looks like their barcode on the righthand side.

The V3 has some hardware limitation, 16 megs of ram is all that can be accessed, that's why 3dfx never made a 32 meg version.

I also have a few of those mousepads from her.  Those are the 3M Precise mousepads, most of mine are still sealed in their original packaging!

But he has no Voodoo5 5000 PCI Rev.A1 3000 or Voodoo5 6000 Rev.A2 2600, so your collection is nicer in my holy opinion on the 3dfx part dude ;)  But it is still great to see more 3dfx collections around, which is also great news for our 3dfx database ;)

What he does, is collect more things from other brands like Matrox, nVidia, S3, Number Nine, Cirus Logic and so on ;) Nice to see someone do that also :)

you're forgetting a few countries like Germany, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and France ;) anyway The European Union is do'n very well indeed, the most interesting card from www.yjfy.com  was that Voodoo3 2000 AGP with SGRAM prototype, it's like my Compaq USA V31K card, but then it is cooled by a V32K cool blok.

he called it a Velocity 200, but I see it as a V32K AGP with SGRAM, if you look carefully on the bios chip it says V3 2000 ;)

So I have a new theorie, it sounds like This:

evryone that owns a Velocity 200 , I aleays read V3 1000 on the Bios chip, and on this wierd one I read V3 2000 on it's bios chip, I think that the Velocity 200 is a mere hoax, i haven't seen no proof of one yet.

It is always a V3 1000 or a V3 2000 like the one from China.  on the Velocity 100 card it doesn't read V3 1000 on it's bios chip it reads this:

and that's it.

So if the Velocity 200 exsists, where can I see the proof of one?

There are NO Voodoo 3 AGP cards with SGRAM!
Only the PCI versions have SGRAM.

Velocity = always AGP SGRAM :)

As to your possible next question of why the sticker on the bios would say V3 2000:

Velocity 100: 16MB AGP SGRAM 1TMU
Voodoo3 2K:  16MB AGP SDRAM 2TMU

Not much difference there and the only thing needed for the difference in TMU's is a driver adjustment.

Incorrect, I own four, five if you include a Velocity 100.

BTW- A Velocity is a Voodoo 3 with one TMU disabled, a rose by any other name is still a rose.

I think 3dfx planned on releasing a Velocity 200 but either they figured out it was unwanted in the oem market where even 2/4 MB cards were still common or the price point was just too low to make a profit.

If I remember correct 3dfx was selling V3's in record numbers but that was due to the firesale prices with small profit margins.

I own one, and have seen others. Yes the card pictured above is clocked at 3000 speeds with a small heatsink! I was told that the sample cards use a thicker pcb which pulls heat away from the graphics chip. Production cards use a big heatsink and thinner pcb since metal is cheaper then pcb layers!

Why they were not sold in large numbers? Cost I would imagine, the SDRAM design was proven and compact. The SGRAM design uses more PCB which adds to the cost.

Actually I have seen 183 mhz AGP SGRAM Voodoo 3's as well, now if only I can lay hands on one =)

3dfx could have sold a 16MB SGRAM AGP card with ease since the PCB already was designed and used on Compaq 125 mhz V3.

No- The term "Bonesteel" was used just by Gateway, and Gateway was the only OEM to ship a PC with a V3 with one TMU.

Dell and Gateway used normal V3-3000 with SDRAM, some did have no TV out however.

Compaq's was advertised as a V3-1000.

V3-3500 with SDRAM AGP tuner

it's just a way of nameing the cards from the lowest  to the highest degree, like ATi & nVidia do with thier Cards.

Here is ATi's example by doing so:

Ati does it with extra letters in each different class after the fraises 9200, 9600 & 9800.

nVidia does it alot diferently like so:

GeForce4 Ti-4600

With the GeForce4 line nVidia uses Letters combined with numbers after the fraise GeForce4.

So 3dfx uses a numeric friase after the fraise Voodoo3 to name it's lowest to it's higest degree and that's about it.

and how about that Quantum 3D V3 3500 that runs at 166Mhz, I suppose you forgot that one ;) Funny though, it's called a Voodoo3 3500 but it runs at 166Mhz Core/Mem, so a normal V3 3500 would be faster? or does the Quantum 3D V3 3500 have higher Nanosecond speed ratings for the Ram ?

Forgot about that one, the PCB looks the same as a 3000 PCI but isn't (extra regulators and other pieces)

The regular 3500 is faster then the Ventana, but the Ventana is built for a different market (mil-sims)

I'm also fairly sure the Q3D card had active cooling but it is missing. A 3000 heatsink will not fit due to a fan header being in the way!

No Problem, although a minimum size of ~10 standard Cards/Items would be about minimum to qualify as a "collection" IMHO.

I think that i have 35 3dfx object in total (card and other items..). This number it is growing up continuously :)....

Could be from any country, really. Brands often use names which sound "cool". For example many restaurants here in Luxembourg have Italian names which sound cool for somebody who's not Italian but very very funny for someone who is Italian (like me). That's why IMO (not holy, I'm not God) there's only little chance that it actually is Italian.

Yes, I don't think that hypothetical italian brand maked deals with 3dfx, for videocards production ;D. In Italy ther isn't this type of market, or at least is very very small market.

Well, i think that this card is effectively a Skywell Magic 3D II, and not a Trust rebranded from SkyWell....At the least, i think it is the contrary....due the fact that Trust is not a specific and big videocard's manufacturer, so Trust could have done deals with Skywell for a little range in videocards market. This could be a reason wich trust Voodoo Dragon 2 black pcb report "M3D II"......

Trust was, and is, a reseller. They buy up cards from companies who do make their own cards. Then they put a sticker from theirselves on the card (leaving the decals from the other company on the card) and make their own boxes and manuals.

The card I have, is and will always be a Skywell Technology Magic3D II but it was sold by Trust under their own name.

My Voodoo Rush didn't had that TV-Out chip either. I was already trying the card for hours and the TV-Out wouldn't work..... I didn't know there was no TV-Out chip  ::)

Yep, it seems a few OEM sellers saved a few pennies by not implementing that chip (hence it probably was one of those items marked "optional" on the Retail Box, as seen with some modern Cards as well)

Well, I just took photos from my showcases and the rest of my "bulk"-cards. :)
In the showcases are 44 cards, 7 of them are sealed and further 17 boxed.
Maybe later today I'll photograph the rest of the boxed cards.

nah I don't think so either, well there maybe one but haha that Voodoo3 2000 with that was released in that Promobox ;) but indeed the most common thing about Prototypes, is that they arn't boxed, that would cost too much money and especially time.

OMG guys WTF happened to the 3dfx community??? I wasn't here for ages (since March, to be precise) and just updated my collection info (ATM I'm a proud owner of 58 cards;)) to notice some strange things - absense of Gary, FalconFly & Patience in the collectors list, banned Jan, some st00pid "reverend" in this topic, etc. Can someone explain me the current situation - looks like I've missed too lot... ;) Actually, I wonder what happened to three collectors, mentioned above - where the hell are their listings in collectors' topic? ;)

Aye, I've got myself nice 8MPix camera since my last visit here and therefore I'll show you something interesting tomorrow from my last finds: ASUS V3300 (Voodoo 3 3000), boxed Supergrace Banshee 16MB with very compact PCB and Powercolor Evilking V3 3000 _PCI_ retail (factory sealed;))... Frankly speaking, I always thought that no interesting 3dfx hardware can be found in ex-USSR region but I was wrong ;)

Were glad to have you back ALT-F13. Just looking at your signature stats makes my mouth water :o

Well the thing is I have some funds but very little time, since I'm starting studying in about 2 weeks, and that would be for 4 years away from home so now I grab what I can before I start.

I could give some exclusive announcement... I plan (and have most of the deals aready started or even at higher level) to reach something as 80+ cards in a short period as 3 weeks
probably I'll reach 84 - 85
(Some of them, I promess, will be quite interesting ones)

These 2 I mentioned are the first 2 form this last series of purchases of mine.

After that I'll get only few items that I might find very interesting in a very long period of time, I'll be buying more next summer when I'll have some time at home again.

well yeah I remember telling myself that 50 cards was my end destination well got 55 for now, why would I stop why would we stop collecting better to say hehe, Anyway I take it as a possitive hobby, there is nothing bad about collecting nice pieces of PCB with great history & Technology  in them, so might as well go allong with them ;)

Atleast we enjoy our hobby which is most of importance.

Well to in my point of view any marketed card cannot be rare, just more like a "not common" all this depending on production quantity, market location and market share.

I agree, it's not really a rare Banshee but it's not as common as a Creative, a Diamond or an Innovision. ;)
Sometimes it pops up at ebay and can be found relatively easy because even if the seller has no knowledge in graphics cards the writing "3Dfx Banshee" is rather big so it is mostly in the correct category or at least easy to search for because such sellers mostly write down the writings on the card.

Well I did a lot of my lo-price purchases without any knowledge of the card, I took time to identify them only when I got them in my hands.
This is one such case.

ah that's an ABiT BP6 Dual Celeron mainboard :)
a friend of mine here in town has one with 2x Celeron 433@ 550Mhz :) he runs Linux on that rig with a Voodoo3 3500 TV AGP :)

now i use 2x 400 Celeron (2x~580Mhz) but i plan to get two ~1.3 Ghz P3-s and modd them to the board.
