Title: Problems with Voodoo2's and new install.
Post by ultima on 05.04.07 at 09:37:31
Hey guys,

since my old harddrive crashed, I had to re-install windows98SE.

I have the english version, together with the latest unofficial servicepack.

It's a via chipset based mainboard, used the latest via 4in1 drivers.

I hooked up 1 voodoo 2 and installed the last Fastvoodoo2 drivers found at 3dfxzone.it

Then I rebooted, card was seen ok, shutdown, same procedure for the 2nd card.

Drivers also indicate that the cards are running SLI.

But then I installed unreal tournament with patch 4.36, along with the directx7 that comes with it.

When I start it up, the startmovie runs just fine, but as soon as I get into the start screen, it sometimes freezes and sometimes it gives a glitch before it freezes.

Am I totally forgetting something?? Do I need Dx8.1 or something??

Thanks for any info

Pim

looks like a hardware problem you could get some heat sinks for the Voodoo2 3Dfx chips just to cool them off a little.

If that doesn't help, do you have enough airflow in your case, since Voodoo2's seem to get very hot and thereby unstable in tight cases with bad airflow.

if that isn't the case then I would start worring, since it could be anything hardware mattic.

Well, both my voodoo2's are cooled with heatsinks, but I doubt it is a heat issue, as they fail in the 1st 10 seconds, so not really enough time to heat up.

Well, I'll just put in the Voodoo4 for tries, so that I can start testing my new card. :)

Would Amigamerlin's drivers be best for a Voodoo4?? Or is it best to just install windows XP on the other partition and run it under XP??

I'd say use Windows 2000 Professional + Service Pack 4 if you are willing to use a NT based OS simply 2K pro is about 15% faster with 3dfx cards than XP Pro.

but the best OS for any 3dfx card is still 98SE + UOSP 2.03NL for dutch systems. for UK ones use UOSP 2.1a.

and AmigaMerlin 2.9 for 98SE and for 2K pro as XP pro use AmigaMerlin 3.1 R11 it's still the best driver for Voodoo4/5 for 2K/XP

Well, I just finished putting back the clean image.

Installed the amigamerlin drivers and tools for my voodoo4, installing UT original right now, see what fps I get. :)

Card seems to be working just fine.

Something is really wrong here.

After reloading the clean image, I installed the Amigamerlin drivers for my Voodoo4, and it loaded up real nicely.

No glitches in windows whatsoever, but same as with the voodoo2's before it, when I try to load a game with glide, it just freezes.

The Voodoo4 tries to load, but then I get a totally messed up desktop and the system hangs.

Gonna do a clean install of windows98SE, very basic drivers, original voodoo4 drivers and see if it works then.

If it doesn't, then there is either something wrong with the card(s), or with something else in the puter.

There's no need for a huge PSU for a voodoo4, right?? I have a 300W PSU with 15A, so that should be enough for just an hd, cdrom, mobo and videocard, right??

Change your GART driver manually and try again

I'm a total newbie with changing that kinda stuff.

How would I go about doing that??

Go to the device manager and see what driver is loaded for the agp (in the system devices). If its a generic manually install via's or vice versa. This for the v4.....for the v2's the agp has nothing to do so I cant think of anything :(

latest 4in1 driver=baaad.uninstall, and google for 4in1 retro, that should work better..

last time I had similar problems,my motherboard was dying :P

I would second PS47's suggestion regarding the retro VIA 4-in-1 drivers.  I have a Soyo SY-7VCAE motherboard from early 2001, and I get good results with Win98 SE using the Version 4.35 4-in-1 drivers as VIA recommends:
