Of course I'm a raging perfectionist and don't think it's quite polished as much as I'd like but sometimes the best thing to do is toss it out there and see if it floats.

I'll tweak and refine as I go along so keep an eye on it for changes and additions.  ;-)

Thanks for those who gave me input while I was banging away at the code.

@gdonovan,

Your site looks great  ;), always makes me happy to still people such as yourself who have a genuine fondness for and appreciation 3dfx's role in the pc gaming revolution  ;D

Even if its out of pure nostaligia, I intend to have/keep my 3dfx cards/systems for a long time  ;D

Missing the V5 5000 cards, the Daytona 4800, the VoodooTV FM and the DesktopTV and the V3 was also available at a 125MHz speed ;)

Perhaps you have some use for this one:
http://members.home.nl/markhuizing/voodoos.xls

Too bad I'm too busy with school otherwise I would've updated it again :'(

And don't forget this Czech site:
http://www.no-x-files.webz.cz/3dfx.htm

Perhaps my fotoalbum can also be of use when looking for Voodoo's:

The site documents cards that I own, not ones I don't own yet.

V3 125 mhz is the first card listed on the V3 page.

Ah, I thought it was just a site listing all cards ;)
(That's why I gave the link to my fotoalbum, to help you in you search)

But don't list my site, since it's not a site :P
It's just a fotoalbum I got at that site since I became a subscriber.

(and it's NitroX; no space :D)

Well done gary, really, mabey this coould be nice Hint for as an add-on to your lovely 3dfx site:

A guest Book or so ;) So visitors can post what they like best of your collection, or ask you things like:

"What gave you the idea to collect these wonderfull things "

Take that as an example :)

But I would like to see a photo of the backside of the Voodoo3 2000 Prototype, just wanna see how memory is layed under that Avenger chip, I hope you don't mind me asking this.

With Friendly Regards,

Obi-Wan Kenobi.

P.S. The Force of 3dfx is in you.

Nothing to see, the backside is blank!

The ram is in between the chip and front side PCB.

I will take and post a different picture though, like the one for the Quantum3d S-12 AGP showing both sides.

I appreciate the time you have put in on it.

I think I'm going to break the Quantum3d area up into more pages. Obsidian/Obsidian2/Mercury and Raven with Voodoo3. The main quantum page is just getting to large to load proper on a modem.

1) The MP750 is still in route from Europe, I just purchased a 300 mhz G3 Mac to test my Mac cards too! A steal at $101 shipped and it has a 5500 in it!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5722763134

Chances are I'll sell the Mac 5500 card and reclaim most of my cash =)

2) I'll leave it as is till someone claims the page but note the name.

Thanks!

Ideas/plans/thoughts

The boxes page-

When you click on a box thumbnail a larger window opens displaying the box in 800 x 600 AND the contents laid out.

Benchmark page-

Will have a series of benchmarks (current list glquake/quake ii/quake II/turok/maybe unreal) showing relative fps difference between all obsidain and major 3dfx cards when cpu speed isn't a factor.

Test machines page-

Will show the 3 testbeds used for testing cards including new 300 mhz Power Mac purchased for testing mac boards.

Case pages-

Intend to build a few "period" 3dfx theme pc's with cases with clear side window cut into the shape of the old powershield logo.

More pictures added to quantum3d pages now that they have been broken up.

Mercury tech page covering hurtles needed to bring Mercury brick back to function (cables/drivers/etc)

Master list page maybe (like on collectors page here)

3dfx triva and fact page with information compiled from around the net like postings from Hank S., old interviews, etc.

Must get sleep.

A few pics on obsidian2 page updated to larger images with less compression, three new pics of 90-2440 are up as well.

I'll be changing the card pics over as time permits from 500 pixels wide & #1 Photoshop compression to 600 pixels wide #2 Photoshop compression.

Picture was posted of the MP750 a day or two ago, nice card!

A bunch of sections are still getting reworked-

The VSA section was completed with new pictures, the Mac section was re-done, the prototype section was redone (with three new cards added, woop!) The V1 page was updated, the timeline was updated, and the Obsidian page was updated.

Still need to re-shoot the Obsidian 1/2 cards as I'm not happy with the current pictures except for a few.

Man the site was mentioned on [H]ard OCP and the server is getting pounded today! The server owner is laughing his stones off, he said he never seen anything like it.

Can you guess when the link was posted?

Follow up on server use.

All new pics are up in the Obsidian section and 4 new boxed cards are up in the box section. The new cards when you click on them, instead of a larger version of the box you see the box with contents displayed.

As soon as I can all of the boxed cards will be that way.

Well that's quite interestng especiality about the Voodoo Rush, i suppose that the Rush is more interesting, just because the way it's built.

3 brands 1 card.

1. Atrend or any other brand like Gainward and so on.
2. Alliance Semicondutor or Macronix
3. 3Dfx.

That is what i suppose made those Voodoo Rush cards more interesting than the Voodoo2's 3 brands, in just one card but it worked!

A little more then I would like, some good comes from it though.

I have had two people send me notes that they own X-24's with the rare cooling fan option. The second indicates it was an option from Quantum3d after the card was purchased. He is going to see if he can find his paparwork and maybe I can pry one from one of the owners ;-)

Add: Daytona

Daytona supports up to 256MB of DDR-SDRAM per chip.

Someone (Rolo01) ran a Daytona at 180MHz with no heatsink! That's a huge improvement over Napalm.

Yeps, that surley is, but what is so different between Napalm and Daytona?

They both have things in common , now don't they?

This is something that has chased my mind for some time.

The Daytona=vsa101
The Napalm=vsa100

The daytona used .18micron over .25micron and it used 64bit DDR ram. And because of the .18 micron it used less power.

Title: Re: Hey look a new 3dfx site.
Post by Rolo01 on 10.10.04 at 22:42:32
It is a pity that that used 64bit DDR Ram on the daytonas. So the advantage of DoubleData is gone, the performance is equal to 128bit SDRam.

Title: Re: Hey look a new 3dfx site.
Post by gdonovan on 10.10.04 at 23:28:01
Daytona was a low end part.

Dead prototypes are no fun.

Speaking of which, I have been inside all day with a nasty cold so I spent the time benchmarking 13 diferent 3dfx cards, page coming soon.

Nice job with the benchmarks. My Diamond Monster used to beat the stuffing out of the Obsidian 50-4440. I guess because I was using Diamond drivers for the Monster and Q3D rel.3 for the 50-4440. The 50-4440 wouldn't run over 53MHz and the Diamond drivers had a slider that went from 53-57MHz. The default setting for the 50-4440 is 50MHz I believe.

I could actually push the Monster to 60MHz with no errors by adding following line in the autoexec.bat file:

SET SST_GRXCLK=60

Will depend on the game engine too- Just look at the Banshee cards compared to the Voodoo 2's. Games with single pass engines will run faster on higher clocked cards with 1 TMU but if a game like GLQuake takes advantage of extra TMU's then it will surge ahead even with a slower clock.

Adding notes and polishing up the page now, will also have some screenshots too.

Nice work of the V2SLI  ;). I wonder what it looks like in a faster system. But anyway, Gdonovan you proved me that a Voodoo graphics card can run with CPU higher thatn 800mhz.
Maybe this 1000mhz cellie is just a rare exception, but if it is not I wil try my Voodoo graphics (when I get it) on my athlon 2600Xp+ (when I fix my cooling system  :P). What if the voodoo2 had 16mb ram per TMU, it would own that 143mhz vooodoo3 ;) (maybe 5fps faster).

I don't see why it would not but clearly the cards are bottlenecking- I did do some tests with the pc downclocked to 667 (10 x 66) but didn't include the results as I had enough work to do ;-)

The only game where the Monster card picked up anything of note was Quake 3 of course, 18.1 vs 19.8 fps. The Obsidian card did better, 24.7 vs 27.2.

The SLI rig did really pick up from 667 vs 1000 down in the low resolutions for Q2 and Q3, here are the results.

Quake 3 667 mhz = 50/50/44
Quake 3 1000 mhz =70/66/46

Quake 2 667 mhz =110/92/65
Quake 2 1000 mhz = 130/99/67

GLQuake = no change.

Quake 3 is such a CPU hog!

Remember most of the cards were pre-production, a set of production boards with hotter clocks or more refined bios settings would generate better numbers. Just look at the spanking the GA-630 gives the 3dfx Banshee! That card smokes!

If I have some spare time I'll toss in some production boards and note the numbers and do a little overclocking for fun.

This pure3d card I'm testing right now is scaring me- The damn thing has overclocked to 65 mhz without breaking a sweat and just keeps on going!

Time to try 70 =)

No go on 70, starting to get some texture corruption.

66 is the best it will do, not bad. That's 16 mhz over spec.

Pure3d = 66 mhz
Pure3d II SLI = 105 mhz
Voodoo 3 = 220 mhz

Both the Pure3d II and the Voodoo 3 cards topped out the overclocking adjusters with no problems. I didn't have the heart to start hacking the registry and push them any further.

Yes if you only have 1 card of it. I have a lot of exactly the same voodoo2 cards. So if I get my ram I wil solder it on 2 or 4 of the voodoo2 cards. And then I will have some Highly tweaked cards. I'll tweak it for what its worth!!!!!!!

I love it! I'm waiting to hear back from the seller now, he states he has some 3dfx promo goods (a 3dfx golf bag cover?!) and early prototype cards.  One of the 200 mhz cards is due to be traded or sold off since I only need one, seller indicated he might have another somewhere.

I'm going nuts waiting for the pictures to show up  =)

Ex-3dfx and Quantum3D and still in the business, was just luck that I stumbled across his name and e-mail address and asked the right questions ;-)

The Quantum3D Voodoo Rush Ventana 50 card I obtained from him is priceless IMHO!

Awesome, your 3dfx site is great !
Very impressive, especially all the background information.
I have a Daytona 32MB DDR prototype at home, this one is not shown on your site. Tell me whether you want some pics.
I am interested in that 200Mhz Voodoo3 that is soon up for trade. Are you planning to sell it here or will you put it on ebay ? What are you interested in ( in case you wanna trade ) ?

Go ahead and send them to my e-mail address in my profile, I have been toying with the idea for a page with cards I don't have.

Normally I'd rather trade then take cash since if the other party has extra cards or is in a location where it is difficult for me to obtain cards then it works out for everyone.  I have been rethinking that strategy since the last person I made a deal with... has not come through, yet.. and I have no sense of humor in these matters.

Does it perform better with FSAA x4 with it's AGP=x4 connector than the Regular AGP x2 models? If so would like to a compare benchmark with the two cards, that might be challanging and interresting also ;)

1) I would think it would not be faster since it was tested in the same 1x/2x intel BX chipset motherboard I use for testing everything.

2) Actually I wasn't going to try and install it on a 4x motherboard, just to be on the safe side.

3) I have had a wicked string of luck the last few months, indeed there is some force at work. Been at the right place at the right time more then a few times.

Persistance pays off too.

Well I'm sure a Voodoo II would outrun this example since they run at 90/90 but I wager even a Obsidian 50-4440 would be outrun for the following reasons.

The Obsidian would have the advantage of having a second TMU run at the same speed (50 mhz) but the Banshee's ram is running at 78 mhz and it is a unified 16 MB.

If you check one of my benchmark pages I think in one example (Quake III) it showed a Gigabyte Banshee smoking a V2 8MB due to the unified ram.

Tinkering with the Barracuda for the first time- It looks like it needs an external power source to the board to function.

I'm waiting to hear back from a soruce in regards to the connector pinout, perhaps we will know more soon.

Primary Image page updated with screenshots and added 3dfx videos page! Know any good 3dfx related videos not shown? Send me the link!

I'd really like to find some vintage game footage.

I have obtained a Barracuda power cable, I'll try to take a picture of it tonight.
