Title: Glide Freeware
Post by galah on 30.06.03 at 16:48:23
It would be cool if we could start a database of Glide based freeware, shareware, abandonware programs.

It could include Winamp plugins, screensavers, games, whatever..... (Didn't 3dfdx run a competition for Glide programing, where did all the entries go? They must be still out there somewhere.)

Secondly, does anybody out there still program in Glide???

Yes, I've seen their Glide competiton back in time.

You can still view it from the Internet Archive :

www.archive.org

Enter www.3dfx.com into the "Wayback machine", and (with a bit of patience due to slow loading speeds) you can look at the Site from alot of points in Time :)

As far as I know, after 3dfx went down, noone programmed anything for Glide anymore (except some screensavers maybe), and possibly some Free-/Shareware Games.

I know Fifa2002 World Cup still had a Glide driver but was not enabled by default on Voodoo 4 and 5's.

I have a copy of the last  version of VoodooLights before the maker vanished.

It is the best glide3x accelerated screensaver I have seen. I also have a couple of Winamp 2 visualisation plugins but they are not overly impressive.

I wonder what 3dfx had planned for Glide at the time of their demise, or were they soon about to abort its development?

Do you know how to enable Glide in it ?  Is there a chance for the V3s ?
It would be great news !

about the games,
ClusterBall is probably among the last games using the Glide (runs only in Glide or OpenGl), year 2000 i think

there's also operation flashpoint, which dates back to 2001 i think :)

isn't there a "3DSetup.exe"  or so?

Yep 3DSetup does it all.

It works OK on a Voodoo 3 but unfortunately the latest cards from nVIDIOT and Radeon work better.

Just sheer grunt I guess.

Glide does have a slight edge on looks though  :D

I tested Voodoo Lights the other day on a Voodoo 5 and it was interesting to see it gets the best frame rates using Glide, then OpenGL then DirectX.

My GeForce 3 gets the best results with OpenGL then DirectX with Hardware T&L enabled.

To be fair VoodooLights was coded for DirectX 7.

So my theory is Glide still had alot more life left in it when it crashed and died when 3dfx went under. Or is that when 3dfx went "over", to the dark side (nVIDIA).
