Benchmarking retro 3d cards; which games?
06.03.10 at 13:29:09

For some time I have been collecting non-3dfx videocards and have acquired quite a lot. Only this week I managed to finally get together all the hardware for my retro system. My intention is to start benchmarking all those cards (and 3dfx cards) this year. The cards range from roughly the Voodoo Graphics period to the Geforce3 period though I intend to get up to the Radeon X1950 XTX at some time.

For the curious ones; this is the system;
Epox 8K3A+
AMD AthlonXP 3000+ (or 3200+ not sure)
2x 256MiB PC3200 DDR-SDRAM
Win98se + updates

I have already gathered several benchmarks;

3DMark99 MAX
3DMark2000 version 1.1
3DMark2001se build 330
3DMark2003 build 360
AquaMark 3
Final Reality version 1.1
FurMark version 1.8.0

Games will be used too, these are the ones I am considering;

Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider 2
Tomb Raider 3
Descent
Descent 2
Descent 3
Quake
Quake 2
Quake 3
Unreal
Unreal Tournament
Serious Sam
Turok
Turok 2
Need for Speed SE
Need for Speed 2 SE
Need for Speed 3 Hot Pursuit
Half-Life
Forsaken
Max Payne

Questions;
1) Any suggestions for other benchmark programs (non-games)?
2) Can the listed games be used for benchmarking?
3) Any suggestions for other games? (OpenGL/D3D)

UT is a good benchmark
you need to download a .dem and copy it in the UT system folder
open consloe and type
timedemo 1
demoplay xxx (xxx is for the name of the .dem) without the .dem

halflife and quake is very similar

You've just exposed my secret plans Angry

Back to your question, keep in mind, that for example:
20 games x 100 cards x 4 resolutions = 8000 combinations.
I mean, this is how I would do it, so if I were you, I would pick just few, exemplary games/benchmarks.
Just my $ 0.02.

It's not like I have anything better to do in my free time Grin

And depending on the game and generation of videocard I don't need to run benchmarks in every resolution. As soon as the average framerate drops below 20, I'll stop and move on to the next benchmark. And testing a resolution of 320x240 on a GeForce3 seems a bit ridiculous so that won't happen either Cheesy

I'm jealous of you guys' free time! Been wanting to do that for ages now.  Grin

Some more games :

Expendable
Interstate 76 + patch or Nitro riders
MDK
Mechwarrior games
Monster truck Madness 1 (DX3) & 2
Hellbender (DX3)
Wing Commander

ps. here you can sort games on what Directx version they run at. Very handy :

And on here you can see roughly what systems you can use for the various years :
