Title: Qty of 3dfx cards produced ?
Post by voodoo5500 on 18.06.04 at 15:16:42
I am curious to know the total quantity of video cards powered by 3dfx gpu's (Voodoo 1 up to 5500) and what was the highest selling model, I'm guessing Voodoo 2 or 3  ???
It would also be interesting to know approx. how many 3dfx cards are still being used today (how large is the 3dfx community) ?

While I have no sales numbers (some old shareholder Pages or related official Quarterly annuncements might come in handy for that purpose), judging by the Download numbers...

...I reckon this is a good guess at the total sales ranking :

- Voodoo3
- Voodoo2
- Banshee
- Voodoo1
- Voodoo4/5
- Voodoo Rush
- Velocity 100/200
- Quantum3D Models

I think that's reasonable.
Voodoo3 was the long awaited (and hyped) successor of the Voodoo2, around or slightly beyond the peak of 3dfx Fame, resulting in extremely large sales. At that time, 3dfx was still No.1, extremely well known with excellent reputation, and everyone was expecting the Voodoo3 to rule ;)

The Voodoo2 is very close to it, as it was as well sold (at the abolute peak of 3dfx) in large numbers.

The Banshee apparently got sold quite alot as well, mainly being a good Price those days I reckon.

The Voodoo4/5 already faced hard competition, and were massively delayed, thus only relatively few were sold (and they were kind of expensive, with the Voodoo4 being not much faster than a Voodoo3 3000 at the same time)

And well, the VoodooRush was bashed by almost every Review Magazine when it was released, so most people stayed clear of it.

Velocities were sold too rare, mainly to OEM's, and the Quantum3D Cards were just way too expensive to ever reach large numbers in sales.

Thank's for the info Falconfly,

I was pretty sure about the order of the first five.

It would still be interesting to know actual/close approximation's of these sales figures.

I'm assuming total combined sales figures for all model's would be substantial, if only 50 - 60 % of these cards were still being used in some capacity today (primary or secondary systems) this would still leave a respectable sized 3dfx using community ?

I just read an article that stated 3dfx sold a tad over 1 million Banshee chipsets if that is any help.

Here is the link, it was a good read, history of video cards 96 to present. It's full of all kinds of little notes.

@gdonovan,
Thank's, I have not seen this article before and it was an interesting read.

@DenisF,
I was making a wild guess based upon the fact that I can account for 14 retail purchased 3dfx cards still being used by family members and freinds :
2 - Voodoo 2
3 - Banshee's
4 - Voodoo 3
5 - Voodoo 5500

Not everyone have the tolorance of your family/friends amigo.

Lets turn to Valve's HF2 Steam survey;
Total Submitted; 956,905
Out of which use 3dfxvs.dll driver; 2,247
Percentage; 0.21%

That doesn't give a /very/ accurate view on how many people actually *use* 3dfx cards nowdays, but it gives a pretty darn good hint.

@DenisF,
Unfortunately/fortunately some of my friend's and family members are not the PC gaming junkie I am and have chosen not to frequently spend $1,000 + on the latest & greatest hardware. My Mom's Voodoo 3 3000 looks as good as my Radeon 9800 pro when used for the internet and business app.'s !

As I stated earlier I am just curious to know out of potentially 1,000,000's of cards sold how many are still being used. I would be slightly shocked if its just a few thousand.
