DX-9 Drivers ?
28.04.05 at 23:50:38

Howdy, All... Long Term Voooodeaux 5500 AGP user here. Works GREAT on Jane's F/A-18, and my 'few' others. I thought I'd try to see if the 'Raziel64-Evolution-1.00.09v45_w9x' driver would let me run FS2004 any good. [My stock drivers let's it sorta run, but when I close the program, the screen freezes. I  Ass-U-Me  that is due to the DX-9 problem with our beloved old 3dfx 'boards]

I un-install the stock tools

I go  to the Device Manager and 'remove' the Display Driver

I try to run the  Raziel 64  '.exe'.. but I get a Blue Screen error message.

Any way to get these drivers in, without the 'Format C:' use ???

Any 'known issues' with ASUS A7V-E motherboards?

H.

Yes!  That "driver install"  works well if Windows Installer 2.0 has been installed, but gives that blue screen otherwise.  At least I think that's the reason.

So, you can either download it from Microsoft seperately or install something that has it in it.

However, you can also do the install without it.

Run the driver install file.  See if you can "space" out of the blue screen.  If you can, then go into device manager and right click your Standard PCI Graphics Adapter under the Display Adapter section.  Choose Properties, then under the driver tab click update driver.  Point it to the folder that the Evolution setup extracted its files to (I think it C:\Evolution or C:\Raziel Evolution or something like that).  Reboot when asked.  Then install the latest Voodoo Control (I think it's 1.82 beta) and you're all set.

Make sure you get the latest Evolution driver from his website (1.0.16 I think).  You don't get the 3dfx Tools, but everything works better.

I still noticed some weird color problems in places so I removed those (and Driver Cleaner really helps with this), and installed the last WHQL's (1.04).  If I want to play some newer games I'll go back to the Evolution or the Amigamerlin 2.9's.  At least we have several quality choices here.  And switching drivers isn't the hastle it used to be before DriverCleaner.

Thanks for your time, Eck... I feel sorta bad that I didn't post a "I Surrender" posting.. Save you the trouble.  Truth of the matter, I threw in the towel on FS2004. I found out there was just TOO much 'buy and add' stuff for it; I really wasn't that committed.  In case you didn't know it, to revert back from DX9... to a previous version, requires the use of the DOS command 'format c:' Tongue...  which I did, and re-installed my Basic, Came-with- the- board, V5 drivers. I run F/A-18 a lot, and there are a few annoying 'issues' with DX9 and it... thus the trouble I went to.. Wink

Thanks again... H.

Nope...sorry to tell you... DX Buster does NOT work on DX9 ! I have used  it on DX8... but... it seems to be well known that DX9 is 'Use It or Reformat'......   Not hard on an old '98 machine with little on it....

Oops, sorry I didn't know that.

Seems MicroSoft gave its DirectX9 some more grappling hooks to claw into the installed system Tongue

I also found that you can use 3dfxTools instead of VoodooControl if you prefer (I do) on the Evolution drivers.  Just install the new (modern) version, not the old fashioned one, from the download section on this site after you've installed the Evolution driver.  All the Evolution additional settings that were in the 3dfxTools included with the older Evolution driver versions will show up.  I don't know what they do but they are there.

If you want the help file you can extract the Amigamerlin 2.9 drivers.  Create a folder called Help in the 3dfx Interactive folder and copy the english version from the Help folder in Amigamerlin's drivers.  Then rename it to what it is in the error message when you try to open it from 3dfx Tools right click menu (I forget and don't have the Voodoo installed on this system), and copy the file (gotta be a .chm extention) to the Windows\Help folder.

Using the Amigamerlin's "Best" settings FAQ for the 2.9 on his website (it's a forum post, not the 3.0 ones the site links to) is a good way to optimize the card for newer games.  I usually use a combination of the Speedy, Quality, and Balanced recommendations for my own preferences.

As installed it's okay for older games but not really optimized by the defaults even for them.

I don't see a problem with DirectX 9.0c with my stuff.  And most of my games are older.  Try installing Dotnet 1.1 and the Windows Update service pack for it.  Then you can install the DirectX 9.0c update for managed DirectX.  This makes it work better as it has more direct hardware access.  Speeds it up.
