Title: Asuss A7V333 & Voodoo 5500- Grrrr!:( Post by whodovoodoo2man on 03.07.03 at 10:37:01
Well, I got myself an Athlon 2600XP 333MHZ FSB, an Asus A7V333 and 512MB of PC2700 RAM from ebuyer.
Turned out the board they supplied is a revision 1.0, plus it didn't have the RAID sockets I paid extra for! Ho hum. So they're getting it back. Trouble is, this leaves me in limbo regarding sourcing a mobo. Ebuyer tell me they cannot guarantee the revision number on the boards they ship out (!!!!?). So, I have two options. Trade down to a slower processor (2400), or get a different mobo and forget about using the Voodoo with a more modern CPU/Mobo combination. Anyone got any better ideas? ??? Andy |

Hm, the Voodoo5 will work just fine in the A7V-333 (any revision).
Only problem would be the lack of official FSB166 Support. Note though, that also the 'old' A7V-333 received a Bios with FSB166 support. It's included 'as is', without guarantee to work, but you might try it. Still, if it's not the one you ordered, get an A7V-333 with official "FSB333 ready" Sticker in exchange. |

Hmmm, are you saying there's a bios which will bring my board upto spec?
I had a look on the Asus website, their info suggested version 2.0 upwards for my processor. Can you furnish me with a little more information, please. Ebuyer cannot guarantee me a FSB333 board, even in exchange. These were S/H boards, and they don't supply it new, from what I can gather. Andy |

Well, I operate 2 A7V-333 (non-FSB166 Revisions)
With the latest Bios Releases, ASUS included the FSB166 Option. Still, as I said, this may or may not work. It is up to you to test System stability... |

Yep, since a few days I operate an AthlonXP 2500+ (Barton, FSB166) in a KT333a-Board.
The Shuttle AK35-GT2 sure was originally never meant to operate FSB166-CPU's , but with the latest Bios releases, the manufacturer implemented support for them. Works flawless and fast :) |

do the A7v333 really have an AGP 3,3V compatible slot?
I can have one for 50 euros but I'm reading the user's manual (in Chinese :P ;D) http://www.asus.it/support/download/selectftp.aspx?l1_id=1&l2_id=10&l3_id=18&m_id=1&f_name=t1010_a7v333.pdf~zaqwedc and it states there's an AGP Pro 4X slot, which supports 1.5V cards only ??? |

I can definitely tell (from my 2 own Motherboards) that they are AGP 4x capable, but not restricted to it.
They run 1x, 2x and 4x AGP Cards in either 1.5 or 3.3V. Beware though, that the very latest revisions (and the Board got frequently revised) might have changed this. The KT333 and KT333a-Chipsets however, are known to support 3.3V AGP in principle, so I expect no Problems. -------------------------- http://www.asuscom.de/support/FAQ/faq103_p4_mainboards_grafikkarten.htm The German ASUS Site states that all A7Vxx Boards (with the exception of the A7V8X KT400) are 3.3V Capable :) |

Well, after all that,, the Asus board went back.
I've decided to go with a later Nforce board- MSI K7N2, which is very nice, but of course incompatible with my Voodoo 5500. I will use the Voodoo 5 with my old Pentium II system for the time being, a friend is poosibly coming up with a good spec Pentium III rig that will serve that card fine! FOr the Athlon machine, I have a CLabs SLI Voodoo 2 set, for which I am currently making a full custom water cooling rig- 6 copper water blocks in all- wheeee! Will post photos of the rig when I finish it. Will also be watercooling the Athlon XP 2600 processor and GPU on my Geforce 2 Titanium card. So that's 8 water blocks in all- my computer will look like a plumbers nightmare! lol Andy |

Voodoo2 watercooling :o
isn't this overkill? Maybe small passive heatsink would be enough :D and BTW the two Texture Mapping Units heat less than the FrameBuffer Interface (I let you guess which chips they are) don't forget the 48 heatsinks for the RAM ;D ;D ;D (just kidding, hey) |

Overkill?
Voodoo 2 cards have always got a bit too hot for my liking, and I'm sure they've been the cause of more than the odd 'hang' when playing Red Baron 3D (the only reason I have them!). I am watercooling my entire system in an effort to eliminate all cooling fans, save for the power supply. (which is an Antec Truepower model, still under guarantee). The whirring of cooling fans drives me up the wall, and with a system upgrade on the agenda, I decided to bite the bullet and build a watercooled rig. The lack of fans will result in a lack of airflow through the case, which will mean more warm air circulating around those Voodoo 2 cards- not good. Many folk have upgraded their Voodoo 2 cards with the Tennmax stealth cooler- have you seen the price of those- $21 each plus shipping, ouch! I can build my waterblocks for pennies (infact nothing, as I build them from scrap copper) and they don't take long to make either, as I have built homemade press tools for generic GPU and CPU sizes. Plus water is far more effective at transferring heat away than air (ask any engine designer). The prices charged for commercial water cooling systems are hideous IMHO, plus they are generally grossly over engineered, probably in an effort to justify the price tags. Unless you have workshop facilities, then it wouldn't be economic for the average computer user to watercool their Voodoo's. This isn't a problem in my case. Keeping the cards cool, should ensure a long life. I really don't fancy bidding for anymore S/H 3DFX cards on ebay, and I'm sure these cards will increase in value as they get more scarce. I'll be watercooling the Voodoo 5 if the mods are succesful, and I may make ram cooling blocks for that! ;D Andy |

ok
I didn't know such a cooling would be useful on 90mhz parts V2 SLI get hot indeed I guess WC will also allow you to evacuate heat out of the PC case, thus not letting the whole PC get hotter ??? |
