Title: Interplay Freespace 2 Re-release
Post by akula65 on 09.02.04 at 06:34:44
Interplay is apparently re-releasing a limited run of their Freespace 2 game on the Interplay web site.  For younger folks who may not be familiar with it, this is a Glide/D3D space combat game from a few years ago that is still considered by some to be the best of its kind.

Sit down before you read the price:

I expected it to be more like rockstar north's price for its own re-released games :D

Ha!  ;D  Don't make me laugh!

Like I will pay that price! >:(  I don't think so!

Up until last week, a FREE version of FreeSpace 2 was available to download @ The Underdogs http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=4150

Seeing as the game is now classed as abandonware (the source has been released) the game was up for free download by the publishers.
However, it seems they have had to take it down now.  The link to download it, has now become a link to Interplay's store, to BUY it! >:(

Fortunately, I downloaded the full .zip of the game, a week before they must have been told to take it down. ;)  I still have the full zip file on my hard drive, waiting to be tried and tested. ;)

Unfortunately, I don't have an FTP large enough to store it on for people to download it from. :(

If someone can offer a storage space of 214 MB, I can upload 30Mb pieces of the file to my ISP FTP space, and you can download them one at a time, then join them up.

But that is if someone can offer the space?

Can't believe I was lucky enough to download it for free, before they made you pay for it. Phew!

Aye, too bad i read this post so late...
I recently often played Freespace2 online. Itīs the best game of its kind in my view...
if you got the first game too, itīs worth to pay for it.
you see, freespace2 had bad luck with advertising... it didnīt do many advertisings, so a great game sunk in the deepness of many "not so good" games.
But if people still play for it, we have a chance for Freespace 3 - itīs not planned yet but only because they didnīt earn enough with FS2... so please, do a great game a favour and buy the game and donīt download it, in the hope, there will beecome a 3rd game released :)

Well, to be honest, it wouldn't make much sense to buy the game now when I already downloaded it before they announced they were re-releasing it, would it? ::)  That would make me have more money than sense!  ;D

But that's not me! Of course, don't let this stop anyone else buying the game, feel free to decide, but until I get an FTP server to host the game, you will be $50 short in your pocket! ;)

I haven't tried the underdogs version yet.  It cam zipped up, then broken down in RAR parts.

I unzipped it, and pieced the RAR files back together, which worked successfully, and all the files seem to be there.  But I haven't run it yet, as I was at work.  They'd probably say something if they caught me playing games!  ::)

I will try it as soon as I get my 3dfx machine built up (if that ever happens).

;D
Yeah, yeah... we all want a Freespace 3, and would like to own all original FSpaces released. It IS a realy the best "space story" 'till now (after a fantastic Wing Commander).
BUT! In my case, the reality is like this...
I have
Descent Freespace: Silent Threat,
Descent Freespace: Great War (expansion) and
FreeSpace 2 !
All "originals" made by "Nero".   8)

Ok, before you start to argue about that it's wrong to use pirated software... I'll say something:
"I will buy all those originals when I get enough money to buy them!" So don't make problem without a problem, all artworks are ment to be shared with all human beings at planet, coz all of us are equal as others (divine justice)! Why to make somebody "short" with knowlege (or similar), if that person is not able to pay for it. :)

And one more sentence. Interplay will "survive", no mater how much people get their product by net or pirats distribution. Belive me ;)

Your last comment is rather ironic since it appears that Interplay may have just gone under:

http://www.planetdescent.com/

I have not been able to get into their web site since last week.

I hope those of you who wanted Freespace 2 got it while you could.

Oh dear.  :(

Such a silly move by the company.

But you cannot expect that sort of action to be tolerated by the staff.

Quote:
This game is fantastic in Glide !

In my system Freespace2 is too dark when using glide (gamma doesnt work properly)
I must run it on Direct3D to be able to see it well. ???

Dunno why, i tried with 3dfxtools gamma settings for glide, gamma settings on the game etc... no result, only already visible parts get brighter.

In direct3D there is no problem, but im wondering if i  get a big performance hit for using it..  :-/
