Title: HA-HA-HA-HA  A New card!!!
Post by jandarsun8 on 21.10.06 at 23:50:42
Ok, well not new but anyway, I'm at my friends helping him build his new machine and digs out this box and ask me if I want anything out of there because his wife is making him get rid of some of his crap laying around the house. I'm looking through the box and I find his old PCI V5 in there. I'm like "Your getting rid of this?!?" and he's like, "Yeah, I haven't touched it in years." So I ask him if he's sure and say yes SOOOO....... I have a new PCI V5!!

Ok, question here now. I've got XP SP2 installed on my main box with a Abit KW7 board and my X850Pro, will I have any problems with installing this, I shouldn't since it's a PCI card, but thought I'd ask. Two, what are the best drivers for XP around now? All my other V5 installs have been with 98 so I'm just wondering. Three, how much of a difference should a 3200+ and 2 gig of ram be compared to a 2100+ and 512 megs since it's still going through the PCI bus which is a bottleneck at the 33mhz bus path? Big difference, little difference?

Sorry, just the only other cards I've got that are PCI are the V2's and the Banshee cards so I'm wondering about this. I'm a little excited if you couldn't tell. hehehehe   ;D

For once, I don't feel irriatated that I'm building a machine twice as fast as mine for someone else.  :P

Ok, took out the V5 agp in my 98 box and popped in the PCI card just to make sure it works, and it does so back to the first post.

I used to do this with my Radeon 9700Pro and my MAC v5500, so you shouldn't have any problems. :D

(only reason I stopped is that EVERY time you update your ATI drivers, you have to remove the V5500 so it doesn't interfere with the install...) ::)

Best drivers are the latest ones from Amigamerlin - check @Falcon's driver section in the archive. ;)

@ Pualpsomaidis

Remove the V5 ? don't think so :)

just uninstall the ATi cards while using the 5500 :) That what I always do with my X1900's when they need a driver update :)

then I will always have a VGA card to co-operate with :) when the ATi's are instaled just switch to them and continue, thereby is that the 3dfx card is very handy for updating Primary VGA's

When updating the 3dfx card uninstall it's driver switch to the ATi card install the 3dfx cards manually then reboot, then switch to the 3dfx card and install Voodoo Control as control panel and problems are solved for the 3dfx card :)

and when all is done you would get this as a result:

with a GeForce 6800GT the result is almost the same , only difference that a GeForce has 1 Ramdac for both outputs so you would only see VGA 1 as VGA 2, with the ATI it's VGA 1, 2 & 3 since that Radeon 9.xx and grater have 2 ramdacs one per VGA or DVI output and VGA 3 is of course the 3dfx card

Here the result with a XFX GeForce 6800GT AGP 256MB:

@ Pualpsomaidis OMG! :o --> Paulpsomaidis

I am not here to listen to your lectures ::)

At least I was ontopic and sloved the problem on how to install an ATI card via the Voodoo5 5500 PCI without removing it  8)

PWNed.

I am chilled, just wasn't into his lectured post which is very obvious.
Anyways nevermind, it wasn't my way to upset Paulpsomaidis by typing his name wrong, sorry for that, it's just that people like Jedi's make mistakes from time to time.

thanks for your understanding.

Ok, well now that we got all that out of the way, I would like to thank both Obi and paulpsomiadis for the info. I got my card working with just fine with X850 Pro so things are running smooth. The only issue I'm running into now is that I'm having some issues installing some games under XP's compatibility (?) mode so I can actually use the card. I'll get it worked in time, going through some of the older "Games" post so it's not a huge deal. First parts over.

By the way, not to add fuel to the fire, but Obi, I do believe that paulpsomiadis was just giving you a little crap man, nothing serious. I forget how to spell my own name sometimes.   :P  It's part of the reason I carry my drivers license with me at all times, in case I get lost. It's at that time I call the girl friend and go "Yes dear".   :P

Yah, it's no biggie @Obi_Wan... ;)

It's just frustrating at times - and trust me when I say you wouldn't believe what I get written on my mail sometimes... ::)

Norries Paul it's okay I just had a very depressfull week and sorry I aimed it at ya which wasn't the idea.

Well I'm back to Omega 6.03 since all the latest ones causes glitches in farCry and Call of Duty2 that were omega drivers 6.05, 6.07 and 6.08 all 3 were no go's.

With my X1900XTX and with Omega 6.03 which are based on catalyst 6.3 all problems are gone, shame that the new drivers just don't cope, seems that the newer drivers are getting worse instead of better :-/ :-[

How are your experiences with later drivers from Omega Cat 6.03?

As far as I know they are okay (latest). ;)

But remember that I'm using a Radeon 9700Pro - which is a totally different VPU design... ::)

Maybe if you catalog the problems 'precisely' with screenshots and email @Omega - he can track down the problem and fix it for the next release! :D

Can't hurt to try - you got nuthin' to lose! 8)

hmm is an idea :) only the printscreen doesn't work with FarCry need something to make screenies in there :)

BTW the ASUS X800 XT PE AGP aka R420 has no problems with Omega Cat 6.08 ;) so it's the Sapphire X1900 XTX PCI-E aka R580 which only has that problem.

Tomorrow I will pick up a nice X1950 CrossFire Edition and hook it up in CrossFire with my Exsisting X1900 XTX , since they both have the same GPU, this isn't a problem and it's about 15% faster than a setup with a X1900 CrossFire Edition card hehe, so why not 8)

so the setup wil be:

X1950 XTX CrossFire Edition PCI-E 512MB GDDR4 @ 2000Mhz Master Card
X1900 XTX PCI-E 512MB GDDR3 @ 1550Mhz Slave Card

The different ram types doesn't seem to matter since the GPU's are both the ATi R580 :)
