3dfx Box Art - High Res Scan
02.01.10 at 12:41:42

Hey all and Happy New Year!  Smiley

I'm looking for some high resolution scanned box art of the original boxes (pre- and post-STB takeover) of scans of all the boxes their possibly are - from Diamond Monster 3D to 3dfx Voodoo5 5500.

I'm wanting to make a 3dfx marketing brochure and the history of 3dfx's designs from advertisements to commercial-ware.  How the styles and colours changed over the years.  However, I would like to start with the boxes.

If anyone has any such material please let me know where to find it.

Thanks.

Ania.

Hej guys,

Sorry I haven't responded for a while but I've been away.  Anyway, I was just checking to see if anyone else had any sources of high-res scans for any box art?

I'm trying to get as much scanned box art as I can get.  It's also going to help me with an Art degree I'm doing, as I want to present a portfolio on the styles that 3dfx used in their boxes, and how it changed over the years.

If anyone has any, that would be greatly appreciated.

If this attempt fails, I may be interested in buying some of the earlier cards (with boxes, of course) as I am also a 3dfx-fan, ever since playing Forsaken on my Voodoo2 all those years ago. Wink

Dzęki,

Ania.

Hello there!

I would like to help you, because what you are going to do is exactly what I would have liked to do in the past years, but I have less and less time for this Undecided

Helping with hi-res scanning of Voodoo3, Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 boxes from 3dfx would be hard to do, because of:

- Some boxes are very rare and unobtainable
- Not so many boxes are in good shape to be scanned
- Usually, consumer scanners allow to scan A4 size to the max. In order to scan entirely a box with a single pass, I think we need scanners can get A3 size (or more) pics at least.

Any way, there are a lot of smaller boxes that can be scanned without problems, especially the good old Voodoo/Rush/Voodoo2 and Banshee Wink

I can take this task on for Voodoo US boxes.  I will try and get myself an A3 scanner sometime in the next few days.  I am not home at the moment but can someone confirm that an A3 sized scanner will work? (Scan Area - 297mm x 431 mm ( 11.7"  x 17.0" )

Would be enough. A Voodoo box is usually big something like 250mm x 380mm Wink

Well, exactly as you, I am searching offers and prices for A3 scanners, just to get an idea of it. I have just realized that good A3 scanners costs something like 2000-3000 euros or more Shocked...

The only one at affordable price is from Mustek....but you know, is not like to buy Canon, HP or Epson Roll Eyes

I think that Mustek will work in the end, but specs and quality apart, trouble will be with future driver development. I owned a Mustek A4 scanner in the past; I can say you it had short life Roll Eyes

Wow! That sounds like a great idea.  I guess this would also increase the media content within the 3dfx Archive.   Smiley  I am sure that many people would be very interested to keep a documented history of the 3dfx marketing and packaging as well as the hardware and technology they produced.

Let me know what you decide to do with this small project guys, I will be very interested.  Smiley

Just out of interest, I notice that the 3dfx post-STB retail boxes seem to be of the exact same size (e.g. V2 1000, Voodoo3 2000, Voodoo3 3000, Voodoo4 4500 etc....).  Is this true?
If this is true, are the post-STB Euro boxes and the post-STB US boxes also of exactly the same size?

If they are, it means that this makes it much easier to reproduce a post-STB box for many different post-STB voodoo models (does that make sense?  Embarrassed ) as you would only need one size.

One size fits all, so to speak.  Wink

What are the exact measurements of these post-STB boxes? Inches and Centimeters are both fine.  Smiley

Yeah, boxes are approximately all the same.

We can say yes, due low discrepancies between USA and Europe manifacturing and industrial tolerances as usual.

So, you can draw marketing brochure without problems, but...

...if we are speaking of reproducing box's copies for bulk/OEM/proto cards (Voodoo3 1000, Velocity 200, Voodoo4/-2 4200/4800 or Voodoo5 5000 ....) we need to be more accurate I guess...

I have just taken some measurements. I noticed:

Avenger based cards (Velocity100, Voodoo3 2000/3000/3500 AGP/PCI)

- Lenght and Height are respectively: 377mm x 80mm
- Width is:
  • 245mm if box is from USA
  • 250mm if box is from Europe

Note: I think is the same for Voodoo2 1000 too, but waiting for other feedback is better...

Napalm based cards (Voodoo/MAC/4/5 4500/5500 AGP/PCI)

- Lenght and Height are respectively: 377mm x 80mm
- Width is: 245mm if box is from USA and EU as well

TV and multimedia applications (VoodooTV 100/200, VoodooTV FM, Desktop TV/FM)

- Lenght and Height are respectively: 377mm x 80mm
- Width is:
  • 245mm for VoodooTV 100/200 and VoodooTV FM
  • 250mm for Desktop TV/FM

Note1: I still do not own VoodooTV 100, but I guess is the same as VoodooTV 200
Note2: I bought VoodooTV 200 from USA, VoodooTV FM and Desktop TV/FM are from Europe

- Tolerance is about +/- 0,25mm

These differences are due to the fact that were used two different kinds of paperboard, one is thick (it makes the width's box of 250mm) (all European Avenger based cards) while other one is thinner (it makes the width's box of 245mm) (all USA Avenger based cards). For Napalm series (both USA and EU manifacturing) were used another kind of paperboard, probably the thinnest, but very similar to the thinner one used for Avenger series. The last one kind of paperboard was used for TV100/200/FM cards too, but not for Desktop TV/FM, wich have box built with thicker paperboard.

Furthermore we should consider that die cut master layout of Avenger boxes are different in Napalm boxes instead, because they were assembled in different ways.

P.S.: Something similar to this project was already attempted with the purpose of giving a box for the Voodoo5 6000; you can see nice results here: http://www.voodoo3dfx.com/Foro_V6k/viewtopic.php?t=69&sid=5fca4680a9b4982774a733...
