Voodoo 2, where are you??
17.09.03 at 10:05:29

I have recently installed a Voodoo2 card, and after many mistakes in installing drivers (new versions, then old versions, missing files etc.) I finally downlaoded and installed the latest one (7 I think) - I say 'I think' as last night I did a Windows update and got Direct 9.

Problem is, when I right click on my desktop, go to Properties and try the Voodoo2 tab, nothing happens. I cannot run any games etc, and my sound has upped and left me high and dry.  ???

Any ideas, please?

Hm, something apparently went terribly wrong there.

I would recommend to :

In Windows Safe mode,
- manually clean the Registry off all 3dfx entries
- delete 3dfx Driver Files from the System Directory
- delete 3dfx .inf from the inf\ Directory

After that, the System won't even know what a 3dfx Card is, and will ask for a Driver at next boot.

As soon as the correct Driver (of your choice) is installed, things "should" be back to normal at least for the Voodoo2.

Many thanks, I will try that. Could you just possibly explain to me how to do those things, as I have to admit I am a complete novice (well, I know how to get into Safe Mode, but that's about it) - sorry  Embarrassed

Thanks again  Smiley

Well, first of all, there's one thing you need to know :

If you've never worked on the Windows Registry before, note that this is "high risk" business. If you know that to do, everything is usually perfectly fine, but a single mistake can cause significant trouble.

I recommend creating a backup of the Registry before performing the following steps :

- Launch RegEdit by Start > Execute => Regedit
- Search for "3dfx" and delete any Key found

(technically, the Voodoo2 should not be listed in the Device Manager anymore after this step)

- In the System Directory, delete the 3dfx* Files (e.g. 3dfxogl.dll or 3dfxv2gl.dll), and glide2x.dll/glide3x.dll if present.

- In the Inf Directory, delete 3dfx* Files as well

- After a normal Reboot, Windows should find an unknown "Multimedia Device" (Win9x), and asks for a Driver.

If available in raw Format, you can point it to the Driver Directory right there. Otherwise (normal case), select "Do not Install Driver now", which leaves the Voodoo2 as an unrecognized Device in the Device Manager.

Now, you can simply launch the 3dfx Driver Installer, which will take care of everything.

Finally, you only have to restore the Voodoo2 to your desired settings (e.g. Refresh Rates, Tweaks etc.)

Finished Smiley
-----------------
That's basically it, Windows "knows" what a 3dfx Voodoo2 is and where to look for its Driver by the Inf; of all Devices known it keeps the .inf Files in the Inf Directory.

The System Directory holds all installed Driver Files (usually .dll's)

The Registry actually puzzles it all together, and holds all relevant Information about what is installed, which settings it shall use, and where its components are located (in short : the Configuration).

Since the Registry is rather crytpic to most Users, one must exercise extreme caution when modifying it. RegEdit (=Registry Editor) immediately writes all Changes to Disk, and there is no "Undo" Function included.
---------------------
By default, Windows 98, 98SE and (within limitations) WinME carry backups of the last 5 Registy Versions (max. 1 per given day), allowing to restore it to the Status of one of these days.

Booting to MS-DOS (press & hold F8 before Windows boots), and entering the Command "scanreg /restore" will open a Menu, offering the last 5 backups it shall roll-back to.

Sometimes (if the error is still "young"), this covers enough time to reset the damaged Registry to a Point before the error occured.

Getting down to a more technical way, it is probably a conflict between your audio and your video card (IRQ, or Memory address). If reinstalling the drivers will not solve your problems, send a full system report (CPU, Memory, Motherboard type, PCI slots usage (what is in every PCI slot)), to Beyond Dreams mail.

Since it is more probable that the conflict is not so easy solving, send also the lists of the devices in control pannel-> device manager that have an "x" or a yellow "!" before their description (eg: "!" Voodoo2 video card).

If there are problems don't hesitate to contact us by e-mail. If you solved your problem already, very well...

Thanks for your help, I am beginning to consider completely re-installing Windows 98!

I tried the instructions from FalconFly, and my comp 're-installed' the Voodoo2 for me, but the same problems still exist, so I returned to the original registry. Everything sems to be quite screwed up as my DVD player doesn't work either.

This all started with the IEDLL.exe error problem. I will post what is in all of my ports ASAP, as soon as I get back home from work. What is the Beyond Dreams mail? And is there an easy way to gather all the info you require?

Many thanks once again.

Rundll is a Windows component usually used to launch some services.

Open MSCONFIG and see if all services listed there are actually correctly loaded, or which one failed.

Since the Sound Problem seems not 3dfx related at all, I also believe you managed to screw up your Configuration.

PS.
You could do a controlled Registry roll-back, if your Probem is less than 5 days old (assuming your machine was started every day)...

Another problem of yours is rundll32.dll errors. This kind of errors tend to make the biggest impact of the non-blue screen problems. It points to a severe problem with the programs running, or with the system configuration itself. Most of the times is very hard to solve this kind of problem and it requires many ours of work for a professional person to recover your system.
Best advise is reinstall windows all over again.

---Off topic---
Beyond Dreams mail is accessible from the website of Beyond Dreams (www.bdreams.012webpages.com, under "Your Opinion" section). By writing directly to Beyond Dreams, we can help better, and write a much more detailed answer, and solve more efficiently your problems, and guide you how to do this in the best way. We always like to help the voodoo users get their best out of their PC's.

(Sorry, might be categorized as advertising, although this is not the aim...).
---Off topic---

To avoid your kind of problems, it is strongly needed to provide more informations(programs you use frequently, how the PC is handling various tasks), in order ro solve properly any problem you might have. Thus I think it is better to contact us via e-mail than to bother others with too much technical language that might not be so much appreciated. Also, some techniques are not recommanded to do alone, and without taking proper care...

I found something interesting about the "IEdll.exe" :

With MUCH thanks to Rick from "The MacKinzie Family" (who sent me a copy of iedll.exe for examination) and Galen (aka KGIII and GotRoot etc) who took pity on me, decompiled the file and told me what it does........

Its a BHO ("browser helper object"), affecting Internet Explorer, that tries to write to the registry "..looks like a fragmented version of SearchBar.."

The problem: error message when starting Windows - " C:\windows\IEDLL.EXE\ file appears to be corrupt. Reinstall the file and try again."

Search engine/option hijackings:

global-finder.com (in the registry as out.true-counter.com/.../?344012)

searchalot.com

coolwebsearch (appearing in the registry as approvedlinks.com/hp.htm)

The cleanup: Use Task Manager (ctrl, alt, del) to make sure iedll.exe is not running. If it is, shut it down. Rename iedll.exe to iedll.old.

Export then delete the following registry keys:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Bar
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Page
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Page_URL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Search_URL
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search\SearchAssistant
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search\CustomizeSearch
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Search Bar
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\HomeOldSP
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard\Shellnext
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard\Shellnext

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run [iedll] C:\WINDOWS\iedll.exe
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run [loader] C:\WINDOWS\LOADER.EXE

NOTE: Loader.exe can be a legitimate Windows file. Do NOT delete or rename the file - just delete the entry above from the registry!!

Loader exe also seems a little bit Spyware... I recommend you delete that run app from the registry too.

Hmmm...

Indeed there is a chance that your System is Infected by a Virus/Trojan :

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.simali.html
---------------------
When Users ask questions regarding System Problems, I always assume they performed a full Virus/Trojan Scan before...

If you haven't done it yet, I recommend updating your Antivirus Program with the latest Definitions, and Scan the entire System.
