Silent Voodoo5?
23.10.03 at 16:15:39
I want to tune my PC into a silent one and because my Voodoo5 runs still with its original fans it has become a noisy component. Well, I know there are some holes (with 5,5cm distance) at each VSA-100 for bigger coolers..anybody know which coolers (without fans) are recommended?
inf: one of the original fans is spoiled (don't know why) and so the fan-hands are scratching at the socket.
maybe somebody can show/link pictures of such mods..?

yup...or maybe asus northbridge coolers. it looks like it takes much space...maybe more than one not usable pci slot.. ???
at all, i thought of a more slim solution.

I had a setup like that on my old Voodoo5 before it died. Believe me it's two or three PCI slots wasted with that type of cooling. There has to be sufficient airflow gap as well or those heatsinks despite their size would be pretty useless.

This is quite easy, just put the V5 into an antistatic bag then put it into a freezer for about 1 hour.
After that take the card out and let it dry ( there may be some moisture ).
Now you can use a screwdriver to lift off the heatsinks. Better use a small plastic card ( like a credit card ) under the screwdriver to make sure not to damage the card.
After applying some force the heatsink pops up with a cracking noise.
I cleaned the surface of the VSA-100 with a razor blade and then with pure alcohol or isopropanole.

It isnt dangerous, as long as you dont put the ice cold card directly into your PC and switch it on...
Just give it some time to dry and youŽll be fine...
I have done this about 5 times by now, and it went well...

but you easily could put your voodoo to garbage when you're not careful..
f#§k, that's gotta be hard
what about the voodoo3 solution? I bet these coolers from a voodoo3 3000/3500 would have enough capacity to work with VSA-100..
inf: check

awesome mod..

- the mod on the card in the lower right surely is very quiet too:

YouŽre welcome, IŽm glad it worked.
Did you mount 2 crystal orbs onto your V5 ?
This could be quite noisy...
Try running them at 7V...

You should be looking at 4 chrystal orrbs or similar cooling. RearGPU cooling and Ramsinks is quite necessary in order to get a sufficent OC. I have heard of techniques using non conductive thermal pads for the rear of the PCB behind the GPU's. All in all you're looking at a bulky setup. Without rear chip cooling you'll be really wasting you're time and money.
