Title: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 31.08.04 at 05:53:15
Well like subject says i'll be listing;
1x Voodoo3 1000 AGP 8mb 1x Voodoo3 3000 AGP 16mb 1x Voodoo4 4500 AGP 32mb both v3s' were re-modded with proper cooling; the 1k was refitted with arctic alumina, and the 3k with arctic silver 5. also note that the v4.5k is NOT a card from my modded fleet, this is a like-new card that has not been tinkered with [mainly cause re-mounting the HSF would be a b*tch, no mounting screwes/holes] Anyway, i'll be selling those to get me a V5.5k pci to play around with, i recently got some old matrox/nvidia cards and i'm gonna give a shot at the 128mb mod if i'll get enough cash from teh sellings. At any rate, is anyone here intrested in buying one/some of those? [or do ya`ll already have like 50 of them in your closet? :P] if not, i'll just list them the old' fashion way.. ala` ebay. |

Hey DenisF are you the guy who does the V5 128mb mods?
|
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 31.08.04 at 06:13:34
I'm the one that has 3 working voodoo4 64meg cards, yes :)
and I haven't attempted a 128mb mod for the v5 yet [mainly cause i don't have any to tinker with] that's the whole idea behind this sell :) |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by Maverick-DBZ- on 31.08.04 at 06:28:56
Do you have any pictures of your mods?
Let's say I were to give you a Voodoo 5 5500 PCI card, would you mod my v4 or v5 PCI or AGP with extra ram? Provided I pay for the ram? Hu Hu? Would ya? ;D |

What would you trade for one of them? |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 31.08.04 at 16:46:08
@Maverick-DBZ-
Yeh i do, in that thread 'hypothetical situation' in tech talk, i posted a pic of one of my 64meg cards [the first one i made, got the same exact type of ram for it, even down to the week of making it's 100% identical :D] And no, i'm afraid i would not accept a card from anyone yet. cause fubaring something that i bought, is one thing. but fubaring someone else's hardware, is a completely different thing. @janskjaer cheers m8! ;D @gdonovan they're not up for selling/trading yet m8, sorry. i wanna completely re-do their bioses with some of the features of that russian guy, and some of my own ideas, before i start selling them. |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by voodoo5500 on 31.08.04 at 18:05:15
@DenisF,
If your successful in your attempt at modding a 5500 to 128 mb ram, I would be willing to pay what ever you felt was appropriate for materials and your time if you could do one up for me ;) Keep us informed of your progress. |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 31.08.04 at 18:40:58
Sure, once i succeed in my 128mb mod [see the confidence? ;D] i estimate that the costs for a new would will be around 30$ [to purchase a couple of ati/matrox/nvidia cards that have the appripriate ram]
Or if some of the people who want them, will be willing to buy together a pack of sdram chips [the minimum number they sell is 100 or so, enough for 12 mods], then the cost will be around 15~20$ per card. ..But all of that is still a in theory phase, i gotta buy a v5.5k first :) |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by voodoo5500 on 31.08.04 at 19:38:09
@DenisF,
Seems rather cheap :o, I'm assuming just to hand solder the ram onto the board would be rather laborious. Anyhow, if it's possible, count me in as this has been a dream/fantasy of mine for a while now ;D |

How many people would you say you need? I'm willing to buy a piece of that 100 pack of ram. I'm sure voodoo5500 would be too. ;) How much is a 100 pack of ram? |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by voodoo5500 on 31.08.04 at 20:42:11
@DenisF,
You stated in your first post you were looking for a pci version, I have two (like new) and am willing to give you one to act as a kind of "proof of concept", if your successful would you agree to modding the second one (for me) for free ;D Nothing ventured, nothing gained ;) |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by VDX on 31.08.04 at 21:13:54
i still dont see anyone has found the right ram for sale as in new or on a video card, have you? im still very interested, i think alot of us would be willing to pay you for the mod and get the ram, someone just tell me which card or ram i need for sure because up to now i havent seen one. :( anyways as far as i know DenisF you seem to be our only hope ;)

@voodoo5500
"Seems rather cheap , I'm assuming just to hand solder the ram onto the board would be rather laborious. " It is, especially since i'll have to un-solder 8 chips, and solder the new ones back. a heck of a job, but it's doable. "You stated in your first post you were looking for a pci version, I have two (like new) and am willing to give you one to act as a kind of "proof of concept", if your successful would you agree to modding the second one (for me) for free " like iv'e stated, i'm not willing to take a card from anyone for free [the guilt if i kill it, will haunt me for the rest of my life ;)], i do appriciate the thought though :) And as far as the price goes, [if] i'll start mass-producing these v5.5k 128mb cards, any money that i'll take will be only for buying old ati/matrox/nvidia cards for their ram, there will be no financial gain for me in this :) @Maverick-DBZ- the price for a pack of 100 should be around 500$, maybe less maybe more. [theoretical price based on the fact that a pc memory stick with 8 chips of 16mb costs around 25$] But then again, i'm not sure how much do suppliers charge per-chip on such small packs of only 100 chips. @VDX iv'e got my dirty little hands on a few dead geforce4mx 420 cards with the right ram, they costed me less than peanuts, but as far as i can tell the ram is working :) [but please, don't go on a shopping spree until i can verify that this mod actually will work, cause much more technicly-advanced people than me {namely hank} have tried this, and i haven't heard of any results as of yet, so i don't want anyone losing money here over a dream of mine] |

I'm very interested, too. I hope you will have success. Good luck.

@DenisF - How did you come up with the idea for the first one, the 64Mb Voodoo4? What made you think "ooh, that might work!"? :)
|
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 02.09.04 at 11:18:18
Well i was just sitting in my room, waiting for a 3dquark2000 benchmark to finish, and then it got to the large textures test.
and iv'e seen how badly the card suffers when it has to swap out textures with the system ram.. so i took it out.. and i looked at it for like 5 mins.. and i thought "*g*, i wonder what would happen if i put a few more of these [chips] in those [holes]... *evil grin*" the next day, my scavanging began, i ran around looking for some kind of card that has the same type of ram, and luckily, i found a friend who recently upgraded his pc, and had an old gf2mx in his old one.. so i gave it a shot, and to my surprise, the ram on both cards was a perfect match, down to the week of making.. the same day, i started the soldering job, and a few days later, the hardware part was done. then i started editing bios files, flashing, re-flashing, testing, etc' and after some more time, it worked, the first voodoo 4500+ was born :) and it passed 3dquark2000's large texture test without a single hickup! ;D |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by Dark_God on 02.09.04 at 17:13:10
Sorry for asking but why isnt it possible to mod a v4 or v5
with DDR-Ram? |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by fish on 02.09.04 at 17:43:38
Because the VSA-100 architecture doesn't support it.
|
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 02.09.04 at 18:21:29
the only 3dfx card that ever used DDR was the Daytona [VSA101] afaik
and even that one, used only 64bit. [which would make it highly mod-able btw, since 64bit ddr is easier to find than peanuts ;D] |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by VDX on 02.09.04 at 21:38:47
since were still talking about ram mod's, is there a way to put 32 instead of the 16 on a v3? or will it not support it?
|
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by fish on 02.09.04 at 21:48:02
AFAIK the V3 only supports up to 16MB Ram.
|
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by Maverick-DBZ- on 03.09.04 at 03:39:35
DenisF what kind of ram does your 64mb V4 use? Samsung?
|
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 03.09.04 at 03:57:33
Hyundai [Hynix] 6ns
[very overclockable, btw.. managed to run it at 210mhz perfectly stable with the stock cooling] |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by Maverick-DBZ- on 03.09.04 at 04:19:14
Is that ram better than samsung 040 K4S643232C-TC60? Thats what I got on my V4.
Which type of Voodoo4 card did you use? |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 03.09.04 at 05:18:19
Dunno, never had a card with samsung ram, can't really compare the two
and i have the regular 8-slot voodoo 4500 agp. |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by Maverick-DBZ- on 03.09.04 at 07:50:32
Oh I see, so you just simply filled in the 4 open "slots" the V4 had with the ram you took out of a GF2MX that just happen to have the same exact ram?
Lucky bastard! ;D So with a v5 you would have to take out all of the 8mb ram chips and replace them with 16mb ram chips with the same exact specifications as the 8mb chips? Would it be possible to install lower ns ram and use a modded bios or just stick to what I said above? |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 03.09.04 at 10:25:21
yes yes and yes.
anything is possible :) |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by paulpsomiadis on 03.09.04 at 22:51:41
@DenisF - Was a BIOS hack required to enable the extra 32MB, or did the VSA-100 just 'find' the extra RAM? ???
Just wondering... ;) ==EDIT== DOH! It says in one of your previous posts that you edited the BIOS - question answered! ::) |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 25.09.04 at 11:21:09
Well I was think'n something out.
A. If a Voodoo5 5500 can have 128 MB on a total of 8 Memory slots. B. And if a Voodoo4 4500 AGP only can have 64 MB on 8 memory slots... Then my question is, why not 128MB on the Voodoo4 4500 AGP? Because the Voodoo5 5500 has the same amount of memory slots, unless that the VSA-100 can't adress more that 64MB per chip, anyway I was just think'n out loud. :-X Well if my query would be right, then this could also be possible: Voodoo4 4500 PCI 64MB 4 slots 1x VSA-100 Voodoo4 4500 AGP 128MB 8 slots 1x VSA-100 Voodoo5 5500 AGP/PCI 128MB 8 slots 2x VSA-100 Voodoo5 6000 AGP 256MB 16 slots 4x VSA-100 |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by NitroX infinity on 25.09.04 at 15:48:12
VSA-100 can only access 64MB per chip.
Now, VSA-101 is a different story; that baby can access 256MB per chip :o ;D |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by janskjaer on 25.09.04 at 20:19:38
Just think, how cool would a VSA-101 version of the Voodoo5 6000 have been?
4x VSA-101 Chips? LOVELY JUBBELY! :D |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by NitroX infinity on 25.09.04 at 21:05:10
1024MB videocard.
Would be a wet dream for professional OpenGL users ;D Not to mention the fact that it would run Doom 3 probably better than a crappy GeForce :P |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 25.09.04 at 21:22:11
Sorry but i rather get all the bells and whistles of doom3 at 20fps, than have it look like doom1 and run at 60fps.
... and i'm sure alot of people feel the same ;) |

@DenisF,
Quote:
What are you talking about ???, qlquake was a quantum leap in visual quality versus the original doom engine games. Why would you possibly think it would look like anything like doom1 regardless of the frame rate :o |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 26.09.04 at 18:53:49
I just replied to what nitrox said;
"Not to mention the fact that it would run Doom 3 probably better than a crappy GeForce " It doesn't matter how much ram a vsa100/101 card has, it will still look like shit compared to any geforce. |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by janskjaer on 26.09.04 at 19:25:49 wrote on 25.09.04 at 21:22:11:
Totally agree here and a valid point here DenisF. As much as I love 3dfx and everything about them, I would rather have the full quality (using appropriate hardware) to enjoy the full experience of Doom 3 in the best possible way, rather than play it in dire settings and lose all the technology and features id strived to put into the game (after all, they would have been wasting their time if it was to be played on dated hardware) because that is what makes the game it is. I saw the pictures of Doom 3 running on a V5 5500/6000 (I can't remember) and it looked pretty awful. All credit to the people who made this happen, it is truly a great feat to see what the cards can still do, but sadly and unfortunately, it is not enough, and it spoils the experience of playing games like these in this modern era. |
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by voodoo5500 on 26.09.04 at 22:21:23
Not disagreeing that Doom3 or any semi-recent pc game will/does look/play much better on more modern video cards that have much higher fillrates and more advanced modern features than any VSA based card, but DenisF seemed to be stating that a voodoo 6000 could only produce a graphical experience similiar to Doom1 which would be completly and utterly incorrect.
Play an original doom engined game on a time appropriate system versus lets say serious sam 1 or 2 on a time appropriate voodoo 5500 system and it would be a night and day difference in terms of graphics. If DenisF had of used maybe Quake3 or something similar as an example, no argument from me, but not the original Doom, thats ridiculous ;) |

Hi
Denis, where could one find this V4 4500+ bios of your's should he deside to do the same mod? ;D |

Currently it's on /home/d/denisf/tdfx/v4b/src ;)
iv'e got two more show-stopper bugs that i gotta work out before releasing it publicly, otherwise i'll end up with an inbox filled with 'you killed my voodoo' hatemail :) |

What program do you use to edit the bios?
|
Title: Re: Listing some of my cards soon Post by DenisF on 15.10.04 at 18:25:47
any program can be used tbh, since those are just text files..
but i'm using vi, for it's sexy syntax highlighting |
