Title: Video card for old machine
Post by Cynda Kindle on 30.10.02 at 15:27:50
I have an old machine -
AMD K6 450 MHz,
192 MB RAM,
Windows 98,
145 W Power Supply.

I want to play Industry Giant 2 on this machine.  IG2 requires 16MB Video with DirectX 8.1.

I bought a Voodoo Banshee card and after much help from many sources, it has been determined that this is not going to work, so I'm looking for another video card that will work, but not cost much - this is a 2nd computer.

So I need a recommendation of a PCI, >= 16MB card that supports DirectX 8.1 that my machine can handle with the weak power supply - cheap.  I got the last one on eBay, but don't know what to look for now.

Frogger, Frogger 2, Sim Park, NBA Live, Triple Play 2000 - the kids get some games from the library, but nothing too video intensive.

I don't really care what kind of video card - just want one that works with DirectX 8.1 and the low power supply and has at least 16MB.

There are no 3dfx cards that work with DirectX 8.1 OFFICIALY.... And there are still no 3rd party drivers that are compatible with directx 8.1 100%.... It may come soon, but right now, there aren't any...

If I were you, I would buy something like a GeForce 2. I'm pretty sure this would run all of your games on your old computer. And the GeForce2 doesn't cost a lot now that the GeForce 3 and 4 are out :P

Hm, I recently gave a K6-2 400 User a Kyro I 32MB as an upgrade, and he's very happy with that Card...

With that old CPU, probably a good choice, and consumes alot less power (weak Power supply kept in mind), might be even the cheapest option.

I can't find a PCI Kyro.  I only have PCI slots.

I asked somebody selling a geforce2 if my machine would handle it and he didn't think a 450 MHz machine would handle it - thought I needed at least 500Mhz.

Thanks for all the help.  I'm still trying to find something, but don't want to buy another card that won't work.
