HDR + Rendering HL2 Models = ....

Holy sh*t, just saw that link in the x-3dfx Forum :

http://www.facepunchstudios.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21286

Well, the day our GFX equipment can render this in realtime, I'd say we did it... Really doesn't get any better than this, simply awesome!

very, Very, VERY COOL! 8)

Maybe someone will create something that lets us do at least 'some' of this in software... Shocked

...and maybe chocolate fire engines will become popular! Roll Eyes

Now I don't have sufficient spare time to check it out myself, BUT in the long Thread the creator of those images gives good hints how to do them yourself.

It looks like almost all extractable 3D Figures from modern Games can be used for that (I saw HalfLife 1 and Halo models used).

Would be cool to create a mass shot of all Unreal Tournament, Quake3 and HL2 Player figures in pose, or you could render your favorite Aircraft from a FlightSIM standing in your garage *g*

Although this might be a little bit offtopic, it will be interesting. The HDR techinque has also been implemented in FarCry and can be activated through:

Quote:
\r_hdrrendering x

where x is a variable between 0 and 11

You will need a GeForce 6 If I'm not mistaken so not everybody can see it. I totally forgot about it but after reading this topic I tried it out and it looks really cool, best thing ive seen since volumetric lightning. I thought It would be very demanding but the game was suprisingly well playable.

Offcourse it doesnt look as awesome as the prerendered models shown here, but sure interesting to take a look at it.

Yep, I read that but I wondered as to why current Radeon 9800 Cards (or higher) couldn't do that ?

The existing RTHRDL Demos work just fine even on a Radeon 9500, so I'm a bit baffled why a GeForce6xxx would be needed, unless it stalls older Cards to a crawl when activated (?)

From what I understand HDR was implemented with the same patch that made the use of SM3.0 possible. Maybe HDR requires SM3.0 and I if I'm not mistaking ATI radeon cards and other nVidia cards below geforce 6 do not support that (up to 2.0b).

Here are a few images for comparisation, the settings are 1280x960 and all details on maximum (no AA)

HDR off (x = 0)

This is just an extra image I like very much. The lightning is perfect Smiley

Hm, IMHO the shots make overly use of the effect (more like lensflares I would expect to see on a Photo using a wrong setting).

I'm quite confident that with lower HDR settings, it would look just like the DX9 Overbright lighting already used in the SM2.0 Path (unless I'm missing some detail there).

The first shot on top used for comparison looks like SM1.1 Path, no overbright lighting at all, it doesn't look right.

Oh well  Roll Eyes

Its pretty hard to capture the effect right. The only thing that really shows the difference is the "lens flare" the rest doesnt really make a real difference.

But you are right, the effect is a bit overdone. You can adjust the setting to a more realistic view but I'm too lazy to try it out.

The first shot was made with HDR disabled but I'm pretty sure that the SM3.0 path is used. At least its indicated in the displayinfo.

Anyway Im pretty offtopic here because it doesnt compare to the prerendered images you showed us. This is really amazing work, I like the one where the guy is in the back garden (opening a door). Its really hard to tell if he is real or rendered  Smiley
