Title: Sort of a survey...
Post by gamma742 on 08.07.05 at 18:39:15
I have been thinking about replacing the tile in my bathroom for some time now. I can't stand the "Pink" border. I keep seeing these Voodoo2 chips popping up on ebay from the same seller. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4663&item=7529443772&rd=1 I'm pretty sure the seller has more. So the question/survey is: Do you think I should do it? Use these chips as replacement tiles. I will probably run into some resistance from the wifey-pooh. I know it won't increase the value of the home but that's okay cause I plan to retire here.

I think it would be a waste of the chips  ::) :-X

You'd better stick to tiles with painted 3dfx logo's. That would be a lot more beautiful.

Imagine :

On a tile  ;D

That would look a bit to "busy" in the bathroom.

Was chatting with a friend and came up with another idea...

[glb]A workbench for the garage[/glb]

That will get some of these computers out of the kitchen.

I don't think I'll have trouble with the Ol'Lady on that one ;D

I'm going to do some calculations to see how large and what dimentions I can get with this lot ;)

My god, friend I hope Your joking.
By the looks of it you are, because those chips can be used for better things. One thing you can do is to fix broken V2 cards, I don't know if you use your V2 cards a lot? I know I do.
Or someone could use them to build a new V2 card, or a system using V2 chips (a kind of arcade machine).
Anyway anything is better than to use them as tiles or keychains!!!!!!!!!

@Gamma742 - nope, honestly a VERY bad idea! >:(

The chips would be better put to use to fix broken V1 / V2 cards! 8)

I agree with @3Dfx_tweaker and @Thandor - and that's three votes to two...overruled methinks! ::) :P

Nah don't use them like that, if they were defective sure, but as long as the chips are good they will be better used for the ideas the other members were mentioning.

Yeah your probably right. But is anyone actually going to use such a large quant. of chips for repair. If I have a bad V2 card I just toss it and pick up another on ebay. The most prized V2 of all time (to me) was the 200SBi, I can pick one up today BIN price $125.00 USD As for the more common ones $5.00-15.00 True, I'd probably try to repair the SBi.

Think about it. A table or book shelf to display your Voodoo collection on. Some of your guys have done some nice work on your displays. Do you think using them as a display case background would be worthy. Come on guy! Use your amagination, 480 chips. If you had them and weren't going to keep them in their original box what would you do with them?

I'm sure I'll have plenty left over for repair purposes and or gifts to a few collector friends, maybe even a few (dare I say) keychains :-X

480 chips for repairs is not very much when you look at it, it all depends how many users want to use there V2 cards. And need to repair them, You will have some spare V2 chips, but what about the others....

Why don't you paint your tiles?? Or print something on it. When you want to make a nice display why don't you just use your imagination. And make something out of wood, a custom made display cass out of wood, with the 3dfx logo carved in it. That's much more creative than using working chips.

Hm, I would only think about the stability and ruggedness (or lack thereof) that the Voodoo2 Chips offer.

It would likely be required to add a transparent layer of scratch-free material, in order to keep things intact and nice.

Gamma is right, far cheaper to pick up another board, or even just use a common board for parts when you get right down to it.

But if you need the chips. It's easier to have loose chips then remove the chips of the existing boards  ::)

Lets be real, no one has much use for 100's of new V2 chips.

Heheh!! Yeah your probably right. I don't know why my wife puts up with me. One day she told me that we don't spend enough time together, I'm always in my "computer room". So I installed an eight port hub/switch in the kitchen and ran a crossover cable (in the walls through the ceiling) did a nice job. She wasn't impressed. All she wants to do is watch TV and Me. Well, isn't it obvious...

well who ever buys the chips is gonna do what they want and thats the way it should be, how many times have we seen boxes of chips for sale, not one time have i seen a thread stating someone needed one for chip replacement, tile your workbench and and a layer of clear hardner over it sounds good to me as falconfly stated already. this reminds me of what i say to people who question my 3dfx collection, i tell them you dont have to understand it just know it makes me happy.

I started this thread to get some ideas from ALL of my good friends here, not to divide us over the topic. Everyone has provide positive input and most of you have some great ideas. I really like this one

but I'm not that talented in wood-work and don't have the tools. I do hope that someone here will persue this one though.

As I've said before. I have seen these pop up from time to time from the same seller. I'm sure there are more to be had. I waited last time as I didn't want to get into a bidding war with (no names). Now that those power bidder have be satisfied, I might have a shot. I don't recall what the last batch went for but the one before was around a hundred bucks.

Now I'm thinking maybe a small computer desk with the table-top and the keyboard shelf, V2 chips on it and a layer of clear hardner to protect them.

Worthy?? Cool??

Your thoughts?

@gamma742 Too bad your not any good with wood. It's not that hard to work with it though, although carving is quite a challenge when you want to make something very nice.

LOL that kitchen pic is funny as hell. If I had my house like that and not just the one room I have, I'd be a dead man. I love it.    ;D   The work bench idea is a good one by the way. I've got about 8 junk case laying around the garage that you can use for the legs if you want.    ;)

I guess my wife has no sense of humor  :P

I am starting to make some headway. There's a local computer magazine called the "ComputorEdge" It's a free magazine that let's you list an ad once a month 25 words or less. I sold this one...

[glb]Pentium III Mid-tower, 800MHz, 30GB HD, 256MB RAM, Intel motherboard, CDrom, Sound, WinXP, OfficeXP, Internet Ready and On-line, keyboard and mouse $120.00 [/glb]

I have to wait another week to re-list as I have another one with a MSI 815 mobo to sell. The one above the guy wanted 512 MB and better video than the on-board so I add another 256 and a Radeon 9600 Pro 128 card that I had laying around. Bumped the price to $200.00

It did make the wife happy when I told the buyer to give the money to her ;)
