Gigabyte GA-7VRXP Rev 2.0 - Voodoo 5 6000.
23.01.10 at 11:25:02

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering if this motherboard has been tested with the Hint based 6000s.

It's a Universal AGP slot, and the specs say it's 4X/2X-AGP compliant. Bit worried about it being universal.

It's listed on Gary's site as being sent in by reader as working.

Big pic (bad quality) :

...

Any ideas or experiences with this board?

Since on that board a KT333CE is soldered on an AGP2x-card should work.

Better test that with a 5500 AGP though - if that works, the 6k won't die, but isn't guaranteed to work.

I figured as much yes, I will try with a 5500 as soon as I get the chance. But what if for some reason you are playing with the board, and CMOS would clear, and set the bios to default AGP4x, that could be possible lol.

Maybe the motherboard sets 'Auto' on a BIOS clear. In that case you have a higher chance of getting AGP2x.

Otherwise you have to keep an AGP4x/PCI around but that isn't really practical Wink.

Not sure if I understand what you posted, but what I mean was, if it goes to Auto, and defaults back to 4x, and lets just say there is a 6000 in there, there would be a problem. Not sure how reliable Auto and wether it will detect the card being 2x. Or wouldn't that be a problem? Sometimes 2x/4x gets a bit confusing.

I mean that: if your BIOS resets somehow the AGP setting will be set to 'Auto' instead of AGP2x or AGP4x. In that case it'll probably automatically set to AGP2x if you have the Voodoo5 6000 plugged in. After all it isn't a hard task to determine whether the card is AGP2x or AGP4x Smiley.

Of course this is an assumption because I never tested it Wink.

True, that's what I figured too. It should probably just work fine, especially seeing as it's on Gary's page.

I will do some testing with a 5500 just in case.

It's just a little project, nothing major for now.

Hi Tim,

Beware- if the chipset of the motherboard is the KT300CF will not work at 3.3Vagp.

KT300CF = KT400 without 8x protocol.

Cheers,
Oscar.

Thanks very much Oscar, I will have a good look next time I'm at my collection.  Smiley

I just had it out again, and noticed that some of the caps are bulging. Bye bye motherboard.

I could solder some new ones on, but I'm not the best with a soldering gun.

I have already re-capped several mainboards... Wink

But you would have to ship it to the U.K. for me to re-cap it for you... Roll Eyes

I'm in the UK?  Huh  Smiley

It's kind of you to offer, but it would probably be too expensive. Smiley

Just try it Wink. I'm not an expert on soldering but managed to replace them. A cheap and normal 25W/30W soldering iron can do the job.

Take your motherboard and put the soldering iron on one of the poles of the capacitor on the backside of the motherboard. Then pull/push the capactor a bit loose by pushing it in the opposite direction of the pole you are soldering loose. Then repeat it again with the other one and so on; you're done Smiley. Anyhow; fiddle around with it and you'll learn it Smiley.

That doesn't sound too difficult. I might just do that. Smiley

(wow, smiley overload lol)
