To Gary and Thandor, about the V2 6MB Prototype
19.02.06 at 23:38:31

Gary, on your 3dfx page i can read  that your V2 6MB Prototype doesnt work? Can you tell me the exact failure? No 3D? Texture Corruption?

and Thandor, is your card working? if not, what failure do you have with that card?

so when garys, thandors and my card doesnt work... is there any V2 6MB out there which works?

I tried my V2 6MB Card today and it locks up when testing direct x7 with "dxdiag"... direct draw works.

my card has had missing a small smd on the backside. i resoldered it (used the same part from another voodoo2) in hope of getting it working but it doesnt help Sad

why?

this is really strange.

i tried some different drivers. some did not even recognize the V2 in dxdiag, others show it. When i want to test it in dxdiag, ddraw is working (i can see a small white square moving fast around) but d3d test locks up immediately...

in other apps like glquake i get the message like this:

" glide2.dll expected voodoo2, detected none" ... or something like this...

Early version of the chips perhaps that had a short life. If I remember right they are a different revison then the production boards.

I even tried the earliest version of V2 drivers I had, made no difference.

the chip of my chuck is not loose! at least i cannot see that its soldered bad...

my V2 6MB directly came from a trashcan  Roll Eyes from Eidos QA (= Eidos Quality Assurance... some guys who are playing games all the time for Eidos, in other words Beta Testers) So 3dfx gave this Eidos as one of the first working V2 Samples to test it in their games... So it think the card MUST have worked when they got it!

as i said, my card is detected.

with all drivers the card is listed in the device manager of windows.
But its not  shown in dxdiag (Start->Run->dxdiag) with all drivers.

-> But when the V2 is listed in dxdiag i can sucessfully run the direct draw test but NOT the direct 3d test.

pci.exe? did not try it yet. will do it this evening.
and dos glide games? have to look for gta, it might be around here somewhere Wink

have you tried the card under Win98SE as well, since I did have the same problems with my Voodoo5 5000 AGP as well, under 98SE I had a perfect function but under XP Pro and 2000 It only worked in 2D perfectly and created Black screens of Death when 3D was used wiht Both VSA's in use, with one VSA in use there was a 3D image.

this was tested on the following system:

AthlonXP Barton 2600+
ASUS A7V333-R Rev.1.02 Bios 1017
1x 512MB PC2700 Samsung
3dfx Voodoo5 5000 AGP x4 32MB Rev.A0 3700

I used the latest 3dfx WHQL drivers for it to work under 98 SE

What you also could do is test the Voodoo2 6MB in another branded mobo, because in the EPoX EP-8K5A2 my 5000 gave Black Screens Of Death in all OSés 98SE, 2K and XP Pro, and on the ASUS  A7V333-R I had a better succes in Win2KPro SP4 and WinXPPro SP2 with 1 VSA, and 100% Succes under 98SE Unofficial SP2.03.

Maybe you have to test the card in another board with 98SE, and there maybe a very positive chance that your card will work since it has been detected.

i ONLY test Voodoos under Win98, since 2000 and XP is crap for them... best drivers for voodoos are only for win98...

i tried the card on a intel bx board... so its the matching generation of mainboard and vga card, so i do not think that the reason is the board

hmm I didn't say 2K was crap lol, it is much more stable when under high loads of stress, though 98SE is more crappy than 2K Pro allround, don't forget all of those BSOD's that have occured with 98SE, for old system or new it's the same shit different day.

anyways 98SE is indeed the best OS to test 3dfx cards, but for a short period of time though I never had probs with 2K lol, XP is indeed slower but that's very common with that OS.

hmm have you tried another KT333 board? or an Athlon 64Board who knows my Voodoo2's worked great in the OpteronDP 244 system as well under 2K and XP lol

"another Kt333 board" ? i think its no use testing a kt333 or even a64 board when it doesnt work in a board made in times of voodoo2  Roll Eyes
---

@Thandor

GTA ECTS Demo says after launching "what 3dfx card?"

do i have to install a newer dos driver or patch for a V2 ?

-> after this i tried a working V2 and it says the same... "what 3dfx card" ... then i tried a Voodoo Graphics and it works! so under DOS the Voodoo2 generally doesnt work with GTA... hmm what could i try else??? Does Tomb Raider run under Dos?

about GTA... copied the glide2x.ovl from the windows dir to the gtados dir but it doesnt work... same failure!

tomb raider also works under windows! i see the spinning freaking crazy 3dfx logo and than i can play 8) but same texture corruption... hope i can fix this by resolder that smd...

-> so i think the windows generic voodoo2 drivers simply do NOT work with that card.

gary, will you also try tomb raider? maybe your card isn't dead aswell!

lol so it does seem to work, but like I said another board might of been helpfull as it did do for my Voodoo5 5000 AGP prototype the 8K5A2 has KT333 wat thta did nor work with the Voodoo5 5000 AGP the ASUS A7V333-R Has a KT333 chips and that worked fine, so don't say that another board would be a pointless thing, as it did give me the sollution lol

Remember it is a prototype and it does not mean it should work in any board Wink

But it's good to see you got it go'n in Dos , Lips Sealed to bad about the corruptions though, so maybe getting a new and smaller slodering Iron might be worth a shot Smiley I mean they can't be that expensive lol

now its getting weird... i tried tomb raider with a definitely 100% working Monster 3D2 Voodoo2 card and i have got even more texture corruption (pic below) like on my prototype V2... WTF ?!?

(then i tried a voodoo graphics board and everything was fine. no errors at all...)
