Yeah, boxes are approximately all the same.
Quote:If this is true, are the post-STB Euro boxes and the post-STB US boxes also of exactly the same size?
We can say
yes, due low discrepancies between USA and Europe manifacturing and industrial tolerances as usual.
So, you can draw marketing brochure without problems, but...
Quote:If they are, it means that this makes it much easier to reproduce a post-STB box for many different post-STB voodoo models (does that make sense?
) as you would only need one size.
One size fits all, so to speak.
...if we are speaking of reproducing box's copies for bulk/OEM/proto cards (Voodoo3 1000, Velocity 200, Voodoo4/-2 4200/4800 or Voodoo5 5000 ....) we need to be more accurate I guess...
I have just taken some measurements. I noticed:
Avenger based cards (Velocity100, Voodoo3 2000/3000/3500 AGP/PCI)- Lenght and Height are respectively: 377mm x 80mm
- Width is:
- 245mm if box is from USA
- 250mm if box is from Europe
Note: I think is the same for Voodoo2 1000 too, but waiting for other feedback is better...
Napalm based cards (Voodoo/MAC/4/5 4500/5500 AGP/PCI)- Lenght and Height are respectively: 377mm x 80mm
- Width is: 245mm if box is from USA and EU as well
TV and multimedia applications (VoodooTV 100/200, VoodooTV FM, Desktop TV/FM)- Lenght and Height are respectively: 377mm x 80mm
- Width is:
- 245mm for VoodooTV 100/200 and VoodooTV FM
- 250mm for Desktop TV/FM
Note1: I still do not own VoodooTV 100, but I guess is the same as VoodooTV 200
Note2: I bought VoodooTV 200 from USA, VoodooTV FM and Desktop TV/FM are from Europe
- Tolerance is about +/- 0,25mm
These differences are due to the fact that were used two different kinds of paperboard, one is thick (it makes the width's box of 250mm) (all European Avenger based cards) while other one is thinner (it makes the width's box of 245mm) (all USA Avenger based cards). For Napalm series (both USA and EU manifacturing) were used another kind of paperboard, probably the thinnest, but very similar to the thinner one used for Avenger series. The last one kind of paperboard was used for TV100/200/FM cards too, but not for Desktop TV/FM, wich have box built with thicker paperboard.
Furthermore we should consider that die cut master layout of
Avenger boxes are different in
Napalm boxes instead, because they were assembled in different ways.
P.S.: Something similar to this project was already attempted with the purpose of giving a box for the Voodoo5 6000; you can see nice results here:
