Title: Doom on Voodoo 2 SLI
Post by Blackbird on 19.10.04 at 17:18:36
Yeah it is really possible! :o  As shown on this German Website: http://www.voodooalert.de/de/content/view/54/2/

You need to download a little Patch and then its running.

if on a v5 it looks like doom2, that looks like bloody commander keen :S

i can't imagine anyone actually /playing/ doom3 that looks like that... it's just wrong.

I suspect while it's playing it looks a heck of a lot better, I'll have to download the patch and give it a go later today on the testbed and see how it looks.

I'll test it with a SLI setup, V3, V5 and perhaps the V6K.

commander keen. Nice one matey!  ;D
I was thinking more along the lines of space invaders! Hehe.  :)

'Tis a great feat to have the SLI running the DOOM games, just to see what it can do, but would definitely not consider playing it through.  A real experience spoiler!

If I remember correctly, Quake 2 actually looked better than that!  ::)

I see 3dfxzone have begun to put login limitations on the forum.  Not a problem ( I am a member) but an inconvenience for a quick glimpse at a topic.

Once again your completly wrong comparing it to the original doom engined games, Quake 3 maybe but not an original doom engined game, thats ridiculous and foolish  ;)

It probably does. Doom 3 may look much better than Quake 3 on a 5500 system.

This is an SLI setup we're talking about.  Different kettle of fish.

;D

Some people take the role of the "3Dfx Zealot" too hard, to a point that they can't even take a joke =\
And that, my dear friends, is ridiculous and foolish :)

@janskjaer
Hmm.. doom3 on a voodoo rush...
C64 pong?  ;D

@DenisF,

As most of your posts seem to reflect a negetive attitude towards 3dfx cards, it is hard to tell if your making a joke or being serious.

If it was a joke then I apoligize for not getting it, if you were serious then your just wrong  ;)

I find the fact that someone got Doom3 to run at all on a Voodoo 2 setup amazing and a credit to our community.

I'm assuming Blackbird thought it was interesting that someone got such a modern game to run on a voodoo 2, who cares if you would'nt want to play it because "it's just wrong", maybe someone else would  ;)

Yes. I give them all credit to making this happen.  It is truly great, and interesting to see that they got even the latest graphical software technology to work on obsolete hardware.  It prides us on the Voodoo series to still see what it can actually do, and how good the cards still are.

BUT in my own personal opinion, I would not like to play Doom 3 using 3dfx cards myself.  I prefer having the full experience of the game by playing it on hardware it was intended for.

Why is this topic called Doom on Voodoo 2 SLI?

Its not even Doom being shown, well not 1 or 2. As far as I know Doom 3 may just run on a Voodoo 5, nothing less.  ;)

<snip>

woop-de-do

You have stumbled onto the wrong board have you not?

People are running Doom3 on Voodoo 2 hardware, just because it isn't supported by id software doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Title: Re: Doom on Voodoo 2 SLI
Post by FalconFly on 19.02.05 at 11:30:32
Exactly, otherwise it wouldn't even run on a Voodoo4 (32MB) or a Voodoo5 (2x32MB technically, it's not 64MB unified) either ;)

Heck, even UT2004 was run on a Voodoo2 12MB (albeit with Visual errors due to really insufficient TexMem)

One things for sure though, it did generate a lot of media attention onto 3dfx hardware again (almost 200,000 views of the post on 3dfxzone.it)  ;)

Reading posts in other forums, it seems to have sparked some interest in people digging out there older 3dfx cards and wanting to put them in a system  ;D

damned i don't bring it to run it's discussing

first i've tried winxp...SLI cannot be detected great driver problems...
after that i'm setting my system up with win98se....effect: by opening doom3 it shows "Unable to initialize OpenGL" -> I've switched from MesaFX to WickedGL -> now doom3 starts, the  3dfx splash screen comes up and i see the menu initialization, then the console opens and i can see 4 warnings..after that the systems hangs  :( this time i have really no idea what i can do to bring it to run..... damn
