Title: Voodoo3 drivers & System Works 2003 Post by woodduck on 11.07.03 at 21:40:51
Help! Have tried for 2 months to upgrade my 16mb 3DFS Voodoo3 3000D drivers. Need is due to unsuccessfully install Norton System Works 2003. From review of site know there was earlier instructions on how to upgrade and I've tried (know little about computers & such). Downloaded to desktop in folder but need step-by-step on why I can not get a screen to come up so as to "Click SETUP" and other instructions noted for the 3dfx tools. Can open folder to "readme" but nothing on how to "run the excecutable". If someone has the time to provide clear instructions/ contact reference for communications, would apprec. System is Windows 98 Second Ed.

Have the original factory invoice for computer, etc. (nothing has been added since). A disc indicates "v.90/56K modem drivers. Problem first known when tried to install the System Works 2003 and got the error message "NMAIN caused a general protection fault in module 3DFX16V3.DRV at 0009:000002ce". Norton indicates problem happens with the graphics driver file, 3dfx16v3.drv which is created by 3dfx Release Engineering, INc. Norton indicates must obtain and install an updaeed version of the graphics driver file. This is what I searched internet for and found the Voodoo site, downloaded suggested update (I think) but have never gotten to an instruction screen or such to do install of the upgrade. Hope this gives you the needed info. Tks.

One hint from my side :
Norton Systemworks is percieved as possibly the worst Product Symantec ever published. Alot of people recommend to get rid of it, as it often enough turned out to be the actual problem itself ::) |

Contact with Norton resulted in them bailing and placing problem on the 3dfx16v3.drv created by 3dfx Release Engineering. They probably not getting a repeat customer.
Believe the site to upgrade the graphics card to be "www.xs4all.nl/~jfeelder/voodoousers/down loads.html". The downloaded file is noted as "v3-w9x-1.07.00exe". Apparently (?) have such stored on desktop ready to somehow run an exe comand or something? Tks for all who are trying to help me understand what I need to do to update. |

I believe the 3dfx Archive (which Forum you are currently browsing *hint* ) might have a 'slightly' bigger selection ;)

How to resolve error message "NMAIN caused general protection fault" in a Symantec (Norton) program or "PowerPoint has caused an error in 3DFX16V3.DRV PowerPoint will now close", or a similar error message with newer XP or Office XP applications when using a Voodoo 3
Download and install the last available 3dfx drivers for the Voodoo 3: Voodoo 3 Windows 95/98/ME Voodoo 3 Windows 2000 Voodoo 3 Windows NT I`ve read this on the web. I hope this can be useful for you ;) |

Okay, just before I start my RANT, I'd like to say that I'm TOTALLY not some sort of Norton software groupie... ::)
O.K. now here goes... ----BEGIN RANT---- >:( I'm REALLY annoyed at the fact that SO many people on so many forums say that Norton software is so rubbish! I use Norton System Works on all my machines at home and I've NEVER had any problems with the software! ----END RANT--- :P However, on a more constructive (and less RANT-ish) vein I'll say that Norton still have some stupid discrepancies to answer for...Like: - 1. I noticed that NSW2002 will ONLY install from an ATAPI CDROM drive and not a SCSI one, rather odd? ??? 2. If more people actually knew how to install and configure NSW correctly, they wouldn't have so many problems! Perhaps better help and support would be in order - ay Norton! :o Take the rough with the smooth folks! ;) CHILL! 8) |

Sorry paul, I beg to differ. Just an opinion... ;)
I paid a lot of money to Norton/Symantec from 1994 to around 2000 or so. I owned several of their products over this period. Their product support is abysmal. They reward loyal customers by promising "upgrades for life" and then pulling the rug from under you and making you upgrade (again and again and again in my case). I ran System Works for quite some time. It's a useful tool for filling memory and soaking up CPU cycles. It's pretty to watch for about five minutes too. But otherwise... :-X |

Nice quote from fedaykins help page, I'll let him know it's in 'circulation'. ;) This is a common problem with newer WinXP apps and the older V3 drivers. It is always solved by installing 1.07.00 drivers or newer. p.s. Norton (Symantec) Software is so appallingly bad I'd rather put my PC swiftly and mercifully to death than install it. ;) |

Awright guys, I see It's like trying to drive a Skoda up a mountain by trying to say that "Norton software works fine for me" :-X
I rest my case! :-[ PEACE! 8) |
