Title: PCI-X, PCI66, V5 6000 etc.
Post by Thandor on 08.09.05 at 17:06:05
Long time ago on a forum called FalconFly there was this guy named Gary Donovan, he asked :

Damn, if only there was a Clawhammer motherboard that worked with a V6K!
Then there was this other guy who named himself 'Thandor' or something  ::)
He said:

Hmm, time to develop a custom board with AGP2x ?

You could use the AGP2PCI Adapter in combination with an AMD Opteron 150 and some high-end board with 66MHz PCI slots ?
Only compatibility *might* be a problem.
And of course the money...

On which Gary awnsered:

Do they make a high end board with 66 mhz PCI slots? That would work with the proper AGP2PCI adapter assuming the adapter doesn't default to 33 mhz operation and nothing else on the PCI bus doesn't rob to much bandwidth.

Well, to begin : Looking at the AGP2PCI Adapter -->

The PCI connector is just the same as that one of an 3dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo 4 4500 PCI and 3dfx Interactive, Inc. Voodoo 5 5500 PCI  ;D

Those connector identify theirselves as : Universal 3.3/5V 32-Bit PCI

If I'm not misunderstood every universal 3.3/5V 32Bit - PCI card should work in any PCI-X connector as long as it fits. So far I'm not aware of 'fake' ones like the whole AGP story with fake 'AGP4x' cards which behave as an AGP1x/2x card  ::)

I also asked some persons who have lots of knowledge about this : They say there aren't 'fake' PCI cards. So if the card fits, it should work.

But, I'm not willing to take risks. It would be nice if there's a way to test it (like testing AGP rate with a multimeter). Of course 'we' can try it out with an nVidia AGP2x card into the adapter. If the whole thing blows up it's not that bad since the 3dfx card survived  ;D

Well, are there any motherboard which support PCI-X ?
Yes, lot's of serverboards do. Many dual CPU board have PCI-X slots. A lot of Intel Server Boards for an Intel Pentium 4 do have PCI-X slots. But since the Pentium 4 isn't that good it's better to take a S939 board with one AMD Athlon 64 3500+/4000+ or something  ::)

Unfortunatly I haven't found S939 board with PCI-X yet. There are S940 boards but they are more expensive and you'll need at least one AMD Opteron 2x0 CPU which is more expensive than a normal S939 CPU.
Tyan does have some dual CPU boards. Most (if not all) boards will work with only one CPU  ;)

"They" are dead wrong.

These are not *production boards* but prototypes.

They run at 3.3V not 1.5V and if run in a 4x board for any period of time WILL BURN UP.

No, I meant the PCI Universal cards  ;)

Ah, still need to verify that the adapter card isn't clocking at 33 mhz.

I already mentioned that one in the post above me. But Gary editted my post accidently  :P

And, this topic is for discussion of the speed of that AGP2PCI adapter, too ;-)

oh mkay, oh well sorry 'bout the Jedi talk lol, still think in that way , atleast The Force serves me well. ;D

Anyways, a delay, oh well the release might be around Q4 05 ?

I dont mind the jedi part, but my nick is ps47,not psyco ::)

I'll post in the "stay tuned" thread once I have more news ;)

hmm okay, sorry PS47 if I click your name state I do read:

Username: psycho47  ::)

http://www.falconfly-central.de/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?action=viewprofile;username=psycho47

must of been a mistake by fill'n that name in lol   :)

But yeah can't wait for those AGP2PCI adapter hehe ;D could use a few :) todo some testing with my 3dfx AGP cards and ATi X800XT Platinum Edition AGP x8 and yes it's AGP x4 and AGP x2 reversable aka backwards compatible :)

;)

new cards doesnt seem to be working when running with agp5.the driver is not able to recognize them (probably because there is no radeon9800pro pci)..

yeah maybe, Dunno how the R420 aka X800XT PE AGP will react, hence that the 9800Pro a R350 is, a whole different architechture, but indeed no PCI versions of both exsist, still it should be possible.

..perhaps with a small modification of the catalyst driver, but I have no idea how small (or big ::))..

hmm any news on those adapters yet ps47, I'm interested in one :)

anyways let me know when they will be ready. I'm really interested in these AGP5 [AGP2PCI] converters.

..basically,the whole project is stil pending because the pcb parts that were ordered from US never arrived, and this needs to be solved (there seem to be some more problems with it).in the meantime, the prototypes are getting some bugfixes (v5 6k under xp,compatibility issues with agp 4x cards etc)..

I just don't hope the plane crashed that they were on :-X But good to hear that bugs are being fixxed :)

A bit OT, but why not choose european manufacturers, there sure is plenty of them.
