Title: Quake Arcade Tournament Edition security dongle
Post by gdonovan on 01.02.12 at 12:08:17
I'm trying to get an arcade machine running with this software but it required a security dongle hooked to the printer port.

Anyone know a way around this? The installation looks like a regular Win95 with a glquake exe that has been modified.

LBE is long out of business, no help there!

I'll post a screenshot after work!

Hi gary,

It would be nice to see Quake run with these cabinets : Taito Vewlix Type F and type L or Atomiswave SD.

My arcades machines :

I must suppose that alert is due to the fact the game is looking for the dongle right?

If this is the case, that's reminding me when you try to run games like San Francisco Rush: The Rock without Quantum3D accelerators. In that case you need to edit the executable of the game.

Maybe this time could be the same as well?

Yep, you are right about that, the security-lock is within the software.

You could try using a fixed/cracked game-exe. Of course it is not legal ::)

Hm... does anybody know how much "logic" behind that dongle is? I can't imagine that it's too complicated.

Yum, to start this looks to be a tasty reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_protection_dongle

Actually I think the law states that it is legal after 2010, at least here in the US.

A modified exe is the way to go, but I don't know enough about such topics to attempt it. Pity for this to be lost as it is pretty unique.

I think Rottentreats may know a way around it, I remember seeing a video of Rush the Rock with a modified exe, pretty sure it was his video.

Gary, maybe you should upload the exe for people to r.engineer

also, here is reference stating that it's okay to run software w/o dongle in 2010

I'll do so later tonight.

Perhaps it's good to upload the whole disc (perhaps with the exception of files that are comparable to the normal Quake version like ID0.PAK).

And a long shot: did you try running a 'normal' QLQuake.exe rather than the one on disc?

Glquake.exe- http://www.thedodgegarage.com/downloads/glquake.rar

Yes I tried running the normal GLquake exe, the maps are changed enough were it won't load them even from the console. The game engine is also altered to play AVI's during attract mode.

hmm.... (click to enlarge)
http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/7520/sentinelfz.png

In one of the strings (not pictured) mentions "sentinel.vxd" which according to this ftp://ftp.aimms.com/pub/Key/dongleproblems.pdf, "For Windows ME, 9x the following driver files are installed:
• Sentinel.vxd (our parallel driver)" for a Sentinel SuperPro key

Hard to say, but according to this picture it could be the right key

Honestly? I think that it's THE dongle!

I mean, the one at the bottom-left in the google image picture

This LOOKS like the dongle pictured and is a Sentinel SuperPro, which uses the sentinel.vxd driver

Goriath- is there any sort of license mentioned? There are Sentinel SuperPro emulators, just need license

Yes, it looks exactly the same, but It seems there are many kind of these SuperPro Rainbow dongle. Although they all looks like the one pictured, they could be differ for model number...I don't know if a poor quality picture is enough to say "yes, it's the right model without doubts".

But I hope so!

Is there any kind of security key or license mentioned in the book on the CD?

Nothing that I can read, since I don't own the Quake A.T.E. manual or software :P

I taken the pic from here: http://quakearcadetournament.blogspot.com/

I'm sure they are different even if they look the same. The purpose of the dongle is to lock the machine to one licence.

The source code for quake has been out for some time, is there a way to recompile the exe for use without the dongle?

I know someone that use to work at Id Software, I inquired if they could help recompile the exe so it will work without the dongle.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

This would be the best option that can assure a working executable and bug-free.

Actually I tried to reverse the calls involved in the dongle process for three days (it should be glquake.00D84C80 but not sure), but without luck. It seems harder than expected. I'm sure I'm missing something, but dunno what since I haven't so much skills with assembly :P
