Which card to choose?
07.02.06 at 13:57:07
Hi there!
I'm going to build myself a new computer to play older games on.
I thougt of running Win ME on a 633MHz Celeron, with as much RAM I can find and get to work.
There are several cards left, collecting dust:
a GeForce 2 GTS (TI?)
a GeForce 2 MX 400
a Voodoo 5 5500
a Voodoo 2
a Riva TNT
a Voodoo
In personal, I have a faible for the Voodoo 5. The question is, should I better use the GF2 GTS (or even the GF2 MX, if the GTS doesn't work) instead of my V5, in addition with the V2?
And which drivers are the best choice for each of the Voodoo cards?
Tia

Uhm, the V5 and Geforce's, are they AGP or PCI?
If the V5 is PCI and the Geforce 2 GTS is AGP then I'd use that combo.

The V5, GFs and TNT are AGP.

Then go for the V5.
It might not have the same performance on that system as a Geforce 2 GTS but you get Glide capability, superior 2D quality and FSAA in return.

Consider also GeForce 2 GTS + Voodoo 2 (in SLI is much better) and play everything you want...

I wouldn't recommend that.
A Voodoo 2 can only do a maximum resolution of 800x600 (1024x768 in SLI) and has no FSAA.
The V5 can do higher resolutions, larger textures, etc.

There are really only 2 choices here:

Or...

If this is being setup as a "older" games box, then go with the V5. I mean anything that you might need more juice to play on, realistically you'd end up using your main box anyway so I'd go with the V5. I've got an older machine setup with a PIII 877 or something like that with my V5 and have all my DOS/ Glide based games like like Descent I-II-III, Shadow Warrior, Duke Nukem, Need for Speed HS, Microsoft WWII Combat Flight Sim and some other games that won't work under XP (like Star Wars Rogue Squadron) Everything else though gets played on my XP and AMD/ATI box. Personally, just think the V5 is the way to go.

Wah, i've been fretting over getting a pair of Voodoo2's for compatibility and now you tell me that a V5 is better?. Are there any games it won't work with?
For example, POD won't recognize a Voodoo2 during installation. Would it recognize a V5?

POD works fine on a V5.
