Title: Q3 motion blur vid download (V5-6000) Post by gdonovan on 24.12.04 at 22:37:42
<File pulled for space>
Updated info and file, please read. Since the video out is disabled in the Mercury drivers the video was capture by the following method. VGA output from Mercury PC was run to second PC equipped with Canopus Spectra 2500. The Spectra has a "3dfx connector" VGA-IN port so a device without TV out can be run through the Spectra card which has TV output. From the Spectra composite out port the signal was run to a third PC equipped with a VoodooTV 200. The two demos were captured as raw 320 x 240 AVI's and then converted over to MPG-1 format at an 1800 bit rate. updated- Voodoo 6000 file now un-posted, one demo file. Perhaps FalconFly would like to host them if you did not get them by now, need to give my service a break. |

Looks crappy. (yes, I'm talking about the motion blur, not the movie ;D)
I'm assuming the motion blur on the V4 and V5 is much better than this? |

Have to remember it's a single 200SBi, not a full Mercury and the V2 doesn't have a T-Buffer to smooth the image out further.

I gotta say that's runs ver well on a single card, Gary, I'm already wondering how it would impact on a full Mercury Brick :D That's indeed heavy metal :P

Is this motion blur effect something only 3dfx cards could do well?
??? |

I don't know nor have I tried running the blur demo on a different card.

First off I like to say. Did you guys read the process Gary had to go through just to capture the demo??
Gary is the only one that can actually see what it TRULY looks like on the monitor. Quote:
Gary, You have a V5 6K. Load the motion-blur up on that machine and let us know how it truly compares with the mercury system. I read somewhere a long time ago that before 3dfx had the V5 6K running they were showing off a non-functional 6K at a trade show and had a Mercury system running the Quake3 to show off the V5 6K's capabilities. I read it somewhere on the net, donno if it's true? |

Actually the video is showing Mercury rendering with 4 x AA, problem is the capture size and TV out video degredation. Quote:
I had planned on it- A 5500 or 6000 will look a little different since both cards have a T-buffer that the V2 lacks. I'm pretty sure it blurs the images so the players look smoother. With the Mercury, if I look close the players look like 5 images "lined up", with the V-6000 the individual images are blurred together more to some degree. |
Title: Re: Q3 motion blur vid download (MERCURY) Post by gamma742 on 26.12.04 at 23:46:30
Yep, That's the T-buffer.
I've heard that on the the earlier geforce cards 256 & GeForce 2 when you tried to do motion-blur, you got the same result. Looked like 4 of 5 images lined up. Not sure because at the time I was enjoying my Voodoo 5 5500. So we have FSAA on the Mercury, just no T-buffer effects. I can live with that 8) 3dfx always did have the best FSAA (Rotated Grid). |

looks like the motion blur that my voodoo 4500 powercolor L shape do.. . =(... its strge?

Title: Re: Q3 motion blur vid download (MERCURY) Post by gdonovan on 27.12.04 at 06:25:44
Well a 4500 would have only one T-buffer compared to a V5-6000 which would have four.
I'm encoding a 6000 Q3 demo now at 640 x 480, I'll see how it comes out soon. |

Uh, a Voodoo 4 does not have a T-Buffer. Only Voodoo 5 & 6 have it.

Ofcourse does a Voodoo4 4500 have a T-Buffer, because how would a 5500 have two T-Buffers?
It's because it has two VSA-100 chips so it is very logical that a Voodoo4 4500 has one T-Buffer because it has one VSA-100 chip, only on the 3dfx Voodoo4's it has been disabled and Powercolor's Voodoo4's have it enabled. So it's also logical that a Voodoo5 6000 has 4 T-Buffers and the AALchemy 8164 has 8 :) |

It's disabled, smart-ass :)
Look at your V4 box and any V4 documentation, nowhere will you find the T-Buffer mentioned when it comes to the V4. |
Title: Re: Q3 motion blur vid download (MERCURY) Post by gdonovan on 27.12.04 at 15:46:31
It's built into the VSA-100 chip and used for AA- Without it there would be no hardware anti-aliasing and the V4 clearly does hardware 2x sampling.

You need 4 X AA in order for T-Buffer to be in full effect.
Here is a snip from the Batch file to launch Motion-blur Quake 3... set FX_GLIDE_AA_SAMPLE=4 quake3.exe So on a V4 it's going to look like the Mercury because a V4 can only do 2 X AA. I think? |
Title: Re: Q3 motion blur vid download (MERCURY) Post by gdonovan on 27.12.04 at 17:39:51 I'm not sure- I think they are related but not the same thing. Mercury has no T-buffer at all but clearly does 4 x AA. |

With the 6000 and 8 x AA the effect is like "mouse trails" with a laptop computer except that the secondary images are faded out. It is a real cool effect to see and worth trying the blur demo on a 5500. |

I have to pull the video down by morning, grab it while you have the chance.

wow that's very nice and stunnining too :P
qhat reso did you play at 640 x 480? your frame rate seemed to be quite high, i tested it on my 5500 At reso 1024 x 768 x 32 with 4x FSAA the framerate didn't get so high at all about 24 of so. on a 2700+. I just want to know what the recommended reso is for the motion Blur demo. It crashes after a while too, quite strange. |

640 x 480 with 8 tap AA, had to run at that res due to the video capture limits. V5-6000 was run on an Epox board with AMD 1800+ under windows 98SE with the last certified 3dfx drivers. The board has been run at 1024 x 768 with 8 x AA overnight in testing Quake 3 with no crashes or stoppages. |
