Title: Voodoo 3 3000 with 7ns RAM?
Post by TM30 on 17.04.06 at 15:14:47
Do you ever have seen a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP with 7ns RAM? I have one here, but unfortunately it's dead... probably because i tried to get of the silver heatsink to rough  :-X :-/

hmm no TM30 though there are some Voodoo3 1000's with 7ns ram and 5.5 ns SGRA< out there also odd little critters, but a normal 3000 AGP with 7ns SDRAM is rather strange indeed.

al the 2000 AGP's I've incountered had 6ns SDRAM never seen a 2000 either with 7ns SDRAM, strange card, doesn't it have NFR decails on it?

you have never seen a 2000 with 7ns RAM? I thougt all 2000 have it...

and my card has no NFR decals, its rather late... think it has 4399 PCB date... have to look this evening, i am at work currently...

all the 2000 AGP's I've seen had 6ns SDRAM and my Vel200 has 6ns SGRAM it runs on 2000 speeds and has both TMU's enabled, so infact a Vel200 is a Voodoo3 2000 with SGRAM :)

does that Voodoo3 3000 AGP have a TV-Out as well, because it could be a 2000 with a silver heatsink if 2000's have 7ns ram :)

my 3000 with 7ns RAM has a TV-Out...

hmm and that 2000, i thought most of them had 7ns RAM... at least i have 2 or 3 at home with that kind of RAM.

so, at home now... finally  :-X

erm... PCB Date 4399... Rev. C... Part No. 210-0364-003.... its SEC RAM.

Will try to remove the cooler now.

edit:

cooler is removed, again no visual damage to see  :-/

355-0017-011
F05175.10
Date 9945

According to http://www.idhw.com/textual/chip/3dfx/chippicture.html it must be a 3000, but why this card as -011 instead of -010?

i put a Matrox card in the test PC and run windows on it with the defective voodoo 3...

v.control also does show 166Mhz clock for the card...

so it's really a V3 3000 with 7ns RAM...

lol perhaps it doesnt work at this clock? i may try to flash a 2000 bios on it...

edit2: i flashed it... it still doesnt work. i also saved the original bios, it also says its a 3000... and it says "Avenger"...

here are my timings...

v3 2000 agp: 6ns & 7ns
v3 2000 pci: 6ns
v3 3000 agp: 6ns
v3 3000 pci: 5,5ns & 6ns

but a 3000 with 7ns is really strange...

@tm30: what bios-version is it?
1.xx.xx: Avenger
2.xx.xx: more detailed name

That's not true :P
The 2000AGP you sold me has 7NS SDR-SDRAM :)

hmm I do happen to make mistakes from time to time, since we all have that problem and NOBODY is perfect...  >:(

@ TM30

hmm strange little critter indeed, but that it ain't working is even wierder, I suppose downclocking it to a safe speed of core\/mem 125Mhz might be an idea only how would you proceed to that objective?

normal 1.00.01-SD bios....
if you have a 1.xx.xx-bios there is a string called 3dfx Avenger...
i guess with 2.xx.xx-bios there was a re-build of the bios with detailed strings etc...

as expected i would say...

but nevertheless the card is "rare" in its own way, lol  ;)

hmm yes, what also could be is that it's a Voodoo3 2000 flashed with a Voodoo3 3000 Bios and that the Black Heatsink of the 2000 was replaced by a Silver Heatsink of a 3000 AGP card, since that 2000 AGP do have 7ns ram as well, this card defection may rely to the flash of it's bios by the previous owner, to be honest this may be it's  declariation of defection.

Though for some it may be hard to believ though I do Sense it happened this way, just to make the card look rare ;)

but it has a TV Out...

and a TV Out for a 2000 would be very uncommon...

i think this card was a "oups" card made by STB...

yeah "WooPs "card indeed, and yeah accidential things can happen everywhere, then this card was one of them, you do have a point there TM30  ;) Great think'n lad  8)

1. v3 3000 agp pcb
2. v3 3000 gpu
3. v3 3000 agp bios

i guess it is a v3 3000 agp...STB made a mistake or it was special pre-tested ram for 166mhz...

hey don't feel bad mate, everyone makes mistakes we are human for that. But yeah I understand your feel of guilt for yourself about the card, it is indeed a shame that it happened. :-/

a review of the v3 2000 based a-trend board...7ns can easily clocked at 166mhz....

http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=1023

"The Voodoo3 2000 core on the board is clocked at the default 143MHz core with the 7ns memory clocked at 143MHz as well.  For overclockers, the 7ns SEC SDRAM can be pushed up to the 166MHz clock the Voodoo3 3000 defaults it at, however if you remember the basic rules of the Voodoo3's architecture, the core and memory clock speeds always run at the same frequency.  The next logical question is how far can the core be pushed?  Luckily the core is the same 2000 featured on the retail boards, which generally hit the 166MHz level of the Voodoo3 3000, and as you can expect the 6254M exhibited a similar overclocking capability."
