Voodoo5 PCI MAC to PC BIOS Flash
23.08.08 at 19:53:13

Well, i got a V5 PCI for MAC and it still has the original BIOS, so I need to flash it for PC. I go into DOS mode and launch flash bios.bin, but it says "The information in the BIOS file does not match the selected hardware. There is no build information for the selected hardware. Continue(y/n)?" If I chose no, it stops, however if I choose yes, it tries to do something but seems to get  stuck, I leave it for about 10 minutes, nothing...

I think that the flash utility tries to acces the main graphic bios, the one from wich I boot, given the fact that V5 is Mac and can't boot alone. How do I tell that flash utility that it needs to select the v5 ? flash /? giver very few options and nothing to help me.

Hey RaverX

I had the same issue as you did.... What V5500 Bios are you using and where did you get it?

I thought the same as you with choosing no and then yes when the "no build info for the selected hardware" question came up.  I changed the bios I was using.  I was using a bios with the wrong extension.  Make sure the extension is .ROM.  If you want I can send you a copy of the files I put on the floppy disk when I flashed my V5 5500 MAC card.

Cool

I took the 1.18 for PCI from here. The file name was BIOS.BIN, I'll try to change it to BIOS.ROM and see if if makes any difference. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be back with news  Cool

Yep, I tried that one too....  It didn't work for me either.

the one that works for me was named:  55k118.ROM
I never tried the DVI port, as at the time, I didn't have a Digital LCD monitor.  However the BIOS does work for the VGA port in a PC system.

Well, I flashed the card, it boots OK as a primary vga card using DVI port. The problem is that I can't install a driver, all drivers for XP seems to get stuck before finish, I get a black screen with a flashing cursor and the computer stops responding. Funny thing is that Amiga detects the card as Voodoo5 for Machintosh. SFFT sees it as Voodoo Series. I tried many drivers, same result  Sad

Ok....    Huh

The only other thing I can think of is to contact Chosen One.  He has a lot of 3dfx BIOSes.  Maybe he has a BIOS for this card that will work better.

I remember having issues with SFFT (I used 1.0 - which was the newest version at the time.)  So I ended up using the Amigamerlin 3.1 drivers, but I also found R11 didn't work well either.... I used R1.   Smiley

PS - I noticed that PS47 and paulpsomiadis have also flashed their v5 MACs to PC versions successfully.   Cool

I know for a fact a bad copy of the V5 DVI bios is floating around.  I couldn't get the flash process to complete properly using the bios file I found from the "other" big 3dfx site.  I tried another file I found somewhere else and it works like a charm.  If you send me a PM, I can get it too you.

I spoke to Obi Wan / Gold Leader and I forwarded RaverX a copy of BIOS 1.11DVIb.  He flashed his V5 MAC within the last month and had no issues.

He is using AmigaMerlin 3.1 R11 for WindowsXP

Well, the first time I flashed with the same bios, only chnaged then file extension from bin to rom. I noticed that in device manager the PCI ID didnt changed, so I think it's a MAC Bios. Then I flashed with the bios razrx sent me, this time I can install drivers, but I can't use DVI, no signal from DVI at boot  Sad

After some time, before I even got a chance to run a game, I noticed at one reboot that the text is begining to shake and display gone a little bad. I turned off the computer and removed the card. Man, it's a HOT card, even the plastic fans burns my fingers, it's as hot as a Voodoo3. The fans are working and make quite some noise, the case is very well ventilated (big chieftec case, 65 cm height, full of fans, excelent airflow).

For now I had enough with this V5, maybe other time I'll try to play with it again, thanks to all that helped me with suggestions here.

Hi RaverX!

I think that probably will sound obvious to you, but I would remember that DVI-D is not available if Voodoo5 5500 detects VGA signal. You must connect DVI-D alone to get picture on screen...at least during POST process and/or under DOS environment. Still not checked DVI-D functionality under windows...

I can assure to you that PCI bios 1.18 that allow DVI-D output I am downloaded from Chosen_One pages (thank you very much mate!), works great!

I have to admit that I had problems when I tried the 1.11 instead; I flashed it and results in VGA coma -----\/\___ _____________ Lips Sealed

Anyway, I wish you the best for the card
