Title: Mesa 5.1 and new Amigamerlin drivers coming soon
Post by 74p54 on 06.10.03 at 21:35:20

Quote:
New software updates for 3dfx cards under Windows 32bit platforms will be available in the next days for download. These will interest Banshee, Velocity, Voodoo3, Voodoo4 and Voodoo5.

What is Mesa?

Mesa is a 3-D graphics library with an API which is very similar to that of OpenGL. To the extent that Mesa utilizes the OpenGL command syntax or state machine, it is being used with authorization from Silicon Graphics, Inc.(SGI). However, the author does not possess an OpenGL license from SGI, and makes no claim that Mesa is in any way a compatible replacement for OpenGL or associated with SGI. Those who want a licensed implementation of OpenGL should contact a licensed vendor.

Mesa 5.1 is ready

This new graphics library is OpenGL 1.3 compliant and supports 3dfx Voodoo Banshee, Velocity 100/200, Voodoo3, Voodoo4, Voodoo5 boards. Mesa 5.1 works fine with Amigamerlin drivers allowing a better execution of OGL 1.3 based games. For example, Voodoo5 users will find an increase of games compatibility/performance with 32bit of color depth and higher frame rates.

OpenGL 1.5 compliant and Voodoo2 support

Next, scheduled releases will be OpenGL 1.5 compliant with software TnL emulation for latest OGL games that require this hardware feature to running properly. Moreover these could have both Voodoo2 and Voodoo2 SLI support too.

Amigamerlin 3.0

New versions of Amigamerlin driver are currently in testing step: Amigamerlin 3.0 is an upgrade of previous AM 2.9 release so the target of this are the systems Voodoo3/4/5 cards with Windows 9X / ME OS.

Really nice! Newer OpenGL versions supported by the drivers are a thing that was requested very much long ago. Looking forward on testing these new OpenGL libs in OpenGL games and apps.

Good work Mesa and Amigamerlin!

Heh.. mesa has been around for ages now, always supported voodoo cards to their full extent..

about time someone figures to use their code with our cards  ;D

voodoo support to full extent? : o

I tried "koolsmoky's alternate opengl driver" based on Mesa
in counterstrike there was no HUD and my gun was black :p
and I thinkl I couldn't launch quake3

but this is great news nonetheless :)

Drivers will never be perfect. Also, when you don't have more of the staff that was at 3dfx, problems with compatibility can arrise. More, we must also agree with the fact that each inovation, improvement, add-on, can make the compatibility problem arrise.

But you shouldn't judge that a driver is not good or worth if it has problems with some games. I am sure that the people that released the driver, will look and solve the problem of compatibility soon.

We should appreciate that some people are doing what noone belived it would be possible after the death of 3dfx in 2000, and that these people are commited to do something when all the others are just passing the problem by...

Exactly... but then again... perhaps not full extent... well... until now!

Hum, I wonder who that might be...  ::)

As for K's alternate... man, it's old stuff! Be patient...  ;D

Just a little thing: GL-Mark (if it is the one I now, can be run very well on all of the Voodoo's, beggining with Banshee and ending with V5), are you reffering to speed problems, or what kind of? The V5 is known to handle well the GL-Mark test...

Bloodrayne, yes, that is a problem. However, it is related to TnL compliance more than anything (as seen also on the Savage 4 error when starting). TnL, emulated or simulated, or passed-by, will prove to be the hardest work for the people that will work on the next drivers for Voodoo's, in the direction of solving this major problem. Maybe if Mesa and Amigamerlin, along with Koolsmokey will work together, this thing could become reality.

Uhm, don't know if it's just me then, but EVERY time I try to run GL-Mark on my V5 it will do 'some' of the first scene then CRASH about 10 seconds into the demo... :P

Also, there are a LOT of GFX glitches! :'(

Do you have to use a 'specific' ICD when running GL-Mark? ???

(Although this makes sense when you run The Realtech GL Extensions viewer! Not even OGL1.1 is implemented correctly!) :(

As for TnL emulation, check the info at the TOP of THIS post about the WIP Voodoo 2 v1.5 Mesa driver! ;D

(please read posts more carefully!) ::)

Ehm....

Mesa is an API, and not a Person (?!) ;)

"Bloodrayne, yes, that is a problem. "
Not sure if your aware of it or not, but 3DA runs this game without a hitch on my Voodoo5, can run @ 800x600 on 32bit with no slowdown at all... Can post screenies if required :)

Also, just a quick (but huge) thanks to Koolsmokey for his latest Opengl driver, works flawlessly with Star Wars Jedi Academy!!!! 1024 res and medium settings, everything is peeeerfect!!!  Thanks again, keep up the great work!! :D

See people, Patience is a woman who KNOWS the facts! :D

Listen to her, LISTEN I SAY - or I'll whack you with a big spikey stick ya' hear! ::)

Oh and InSomNiaN - what 3DA settings / drivers / OGL driver / Bloodrayne settings do you use when you run Bloodrayne? ???

Settings and driver info would be appreciated - along with some nice screenies! ;)

Thanx! ;D

Enable all the "Hardware Limits (cap bits)" except "emulate max. sim. textures"
In the "Hardware Limits (features)" part, enable "enable cube maps" and "enable VOODOO flicker fix".
That's about it...I'm not sure if I used to select dll's in the Bloodraybe folder...

Hey paulpsomiadis,
I was using the 3dhq beta 10 drivers, Lecram was pretty spot with  the settings, but don't forget to use the dll hook as well. And the final thing is to set your desktop to 32bit colour. Screenies will be coming shortly....   ;)

OOkay! Thanx guys, I'll give it a shot! ;D

Even though I use Amigamerlin 3.0 on my Win 2K setup...  :P( I don't like the 3DHQ drivers, too many 'untested' features...if you get my meaning! ::)).

I'll let ya' know how I get on with this! ;)

There is nothing wrong with the 3dhq beta 10's. I've had no issues with those drivers...But I've heard alot of compat. issues with the Amiga 3.0s...even though koolsmoky worked on both...weird...
But yeah, I was also using the beta 10's when I had my Voodoo 5

Huh? Exactly the opposite for me! ???

I've ALWAYS had issues with the 3DHQ drivers, but none with the Amigamerlin releases! :-/

I guess it's just what kind of setup you're using as to what drivers will work best for you! :P

I've set it up and Bloodrayne works GREAT! ;D

Oh and in case you guys didn't know, you can get texture editing tools for Bloodrayne now (there have been some 'interesting' results, heheheh!) ;D ;)

There is no possibility to run Bloodrayne with 3DA under OpenGL!! Only DirectX will run it. I ran it on R8500 under OpenGL and it was very ugly (fuzzy textures, weird fog,...)  ???  DirectX is best choice for this game. Maybe after they update their OpenGL implementation.

Yah, my bad! :(

I posted earlier 'thinking' that the game was running under OGL, but it ONLY runs in D3D mode... ::)

(come to think of it, there are a LOT of games that are supposed to support OGL, but don't support it 'properly'...) :P

Anyone think of any that fall into this category? ???

P.S. Oh and 'vykupitel', your avatar seems to be 'broken' (no picture) ???

-EDIT- 'vykupitel' fixed his avater...kewl! :D

3D Analyzer is mostly developed for D3d, not for OpenGL. The game Bloodrayne is know to work perfectly on a Radeon 9000 and upper, in d3d (at least the Demo). OpenGL is a problem, since it could use newely designed functions from OpenGL 1.2 or 1.3, which obviously, Radeon 8500 is not handling...
