Voodoo 5 plus Voodoo 2's - any point?
29.11.04 at 00:58:10

Hello,

I just finished putting my old PC back together again and would like to use it as a 'Retro' rig mostly for my old flight Sims such as Longbow2 and Hind. I would also like to play some of the earlier games that i missed out on the first time round.

The PC consists of the following Hardware:

Gigabyte GA-6BXC Mobo
P3 - 550mhz
256 MB Ram
Voodoo 5
Creative SoundBlaster Live!
13 Gig HDD.

Also, i have just acquired a couple of identical Creative Voodoo 2’s that i want to run in SLI mode. So, my question is - is it worth rigging up the V2's to run along side the V5? From what i can gather this would most probably be a waste of time as the V5 is already SLI enabled, right?

Any thoughts, comments and advice will be very much appreciated.

TIA

Tommy

If you have both the V5 and V2 SLI in your computer you can play games either on the V5 or the V2 SLI.

Note that performance of the V5 does not increase when adding a V2 SLI.

Also, the V5 has onboard SLI compared to the external SLI of the V2's.

Now, on a somewhat related matter: A V5 on a 550MHz processor? You are missing out on a lot of power, but you do get free FSAA probably Tongue

@Tommy,

NitroX infinity is correct in stating that the cpu will be the bottleneck in your setup, but hey thats what you have to work with.

Easy choosing the Voodoo 5 here :

1.  higher fillrate (with a beefier cpu).
2.  32 bit color support.
3.  2048 X 2048 texture support.
4. 2 or 4 sample FSAA hardware support.
5.  64 mb of memory divided by 2 gpu's = 32 mb in reality.
6.  350 mhz ramdac = great 2d image quality.
7.  3dfx post filters for good looking 16 bit color in games.
8.  texture compression support.

Voodoo 2 might be a bit more compatable with some older games, but besides that I can't think of any other reason to choose it over the Voodoo5's advanced features.

This set-up will work very well with the games you have mentioned and many more  Wink

Don't forget people that it's not USUALLY possible to have a V2 and V5 in one machine! Roll Eyes

Why? ???

Because the GLiDE drivers will conflict and make the cards react in an unusual way! Tongue

@Tommy - you might want to just stick with the V5! Wink

If you REALLY want to use the V2's in SLI - buy a cheap secondhand PC and use that for older games with the dual V2's! Cheesy

Nuff said! 8)
