Title: Homeworld & FSAA Post by grunw on 19.07.04 at 20:28:02
I've finally received my voodoo5 5500 agp! :D
I'm kinda surprised that the game 3dfx did choose for examples on the documentation of FSAA is homeworld.. why? Because it seems to be the only game that FSAA screws something up with. The text is blurry and the anti-aliasing seems to be applied to the 2d interface of the game also! :-/ I don't have this problem with any other game yet.. STRANGE :o Is there something I'm missing, i mean, something to tweak to get the 2d stuff drawn without FSAA stuff on homeworld? any clues? |

That's how SSAA works. It AA's everything, which is better than MSAA IMHO. Try playing around with you LoD settings; LoD -2 iirc

Go play JKII, you'll see it on the hud.

sorry but i think ur wrong! ;)
Ive just upgraded from a banshee to a v5 and have JK2:Jedi outcast installed, and trust me, the hud and 2d stuff is the same, it looked blurry also with my banshee! identical |

I refuse to argue with you. If you're so right then why did you start this thread?

im wondering.. maybe homeworld handles the 2d display in-game as a texture instead of using the GDI equivalent in the 3d api´s drawing functions and so FSAA gets applied to it. The interface buttons etc.. are only blurry when playing, not when your starting a game etc..
so, maybe is the way homeworld draws the 2d stuff while in-game just a guess.. |

AFAIK, all (more or less) modern Games mark their HUD / Onscreen Menus or 2D Display Items as Overlays not to be AntiAliased.
I'm not sure if they did that with HomeWorld I, since at that time FSAA wasn't quite a "checkmark" feature it today is. But anyway, if memory serves me right, even a Voodoo4/5 can be told not to Antialias Textures or Overlays that are flagged as such. So I'm not sure if it's a Driver or a Game bug (or Combo). PS. I remember playing X - Beyond the Frontier and eXtension with 2x/4x FSAA; all Overlays/Menus were still nice & sharp. |

A easy example: it is AA on the text in HalfLife if you set it on... It soo in all games that has done their menu interface in that manor. You can do menu in directx or outside of it. Then what you can do inside directx or others api I haven't really learned yet but on a 3dfxchip I do not think that matters. 3dfx AA is not like other AA...

Screenshot of homeworld, 640x480x32, direct3D, FSAAx4
You now see what i mean, the text is hard to see, if you use a greater resolution it gets better, at 1024x768 the game uses a greater font causing the text to be seen more easily (even blurried) |
