Title: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs
Post by LuxKiller65 on 04.08.05 at 20:37:34
I OBVIOUSLY MEANT CRYSTAL, NOT GOLDEN!

Hi there!

On the left side I have a Voodoo4 4500 PCI from which I removed the stock heatsink and cooler. The card has two unused mounting holes near the GPU, on the PCB.

On the right side I have a Thermaltake Orange Orb and Crystal Orb, which are chipset coolers (or BGA coolers if you like). These have two mounting holes.

Now, I read dozens of reviews of these coolers, but haven't found any information on Voodoo cards, if the holes on the PCB will fit those on the coolers. By looking at pictures, I assume holes on the Orange and Crystal are in the same location and equally distant.

I really hope somebody here have used or is still using one of these coolers on a Voodoo4, so that he can help me out.

I also wanted to know the real and total height of the two coolers, since everywhere can only be found the height of the coolers, and not of the actual cooling systems (the coolers are enclosed in the heatsinks, so these will be taller).

Thanks a lot!

Can't you measure the distance between the holes on the card and the mounting pins on the coolers?

If the coolers are suitable for 40mm then it should fit; it's all standard sized.

BTW, isn't BGA "Ball Grid Array" aka Intel's Socket775?

No, BGA stands for Bridge Graphic Adapter, cooler solutions for Northbridge and GPUs.

I'll check the distance.

:D

P.S. I don't have the coolers, that'0s why I'm asking!  ::)

You could use Titan TTC-CUV1AB VGA cooler. It's copper, small, but good enough for Avenger and VSA100 and it has many mounting clips compatible with all standars for distance between the mounting holes. Just choose the suitable clip and mount the VGA cooler on the card. But never use the Titan termal compound! It's crap! Something like Arctic Cereamique is cheap and very good. I realy want one CUV1AB for my Voodoo, but I don't have the money to buy one yet. But I tried one from my friend and it suits perfectly on it.
Good luck Lux!

I'll check some reviews of the cooler you mention. Actually, I remember a battle between the Blue/Orange/Crystal Orb and some Titan coolers, and the Titan were always getting higher temperatures.

Anyway, if you need some Orange Orbs, which are incredibly thin, let me know, I MIGHT have a contact to buy these really cheap!

best cooler i ever used on a vsa was the gforce4 copper cooler, i had the crystal orbs but they sucked a$$, the g4 cooler works better than any of the orbs

Fine, but I said enough times I have very hugely tiny limited space!

:)

So an Orange Orb will be perfect, since I don't even overclock. But you're right, there's always something better. Go for a water cooling, and your cooler will suck too!

:P

They will fit, I saw one go up on eBay not too long ago with Orbs on it.

On a Voodoo?!

That's interesting, the screw holes on the Voodoo4 are more or less 60mm distant. Is it the "standard" distance for VGA coolers?

http://www.outpost.com/

but i dont know if they show everything on line, they tend to carry outdated items till they sell them, also its in the u.s.

hope this help you

here ive made it even easier for you and done the site search for it
http://shop3.outpost.com/catreq/-1742

but it looks like there more expensive as is the case most times compared to an online only seller

now here is my favorite if i was doing a little q3d mod

http://shop3.outpost.com/product/3639205?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

mostly cause of the color, it dont really look like it would cool much to me though

Thanks a lot for the links!
If I can't get an Orange Orb, I'll have to get a Crystal one.
Just found this one:

hmm, maybe you guys can explain to me more about heat sinks for video cards. I read somewhere, possible here, that Voodoo 3's get pretty hot, and since they don't have a fan monted like many modern ATI video cards, they tend to get hot.

The voodoo 3 3000 agp I have looks like it has a heat sink on it, I'm wondering how could I cool it off more? or is that not a heat sink?

I have used Heat Sinks for ram, aluminum. I don't know anything about heat sinks for video cards.

If someone could eleborate that for me, that'a be jake :) /walkthrough~guide

Judging just by sight I'd say it has more or less the same performance of a crystal orb

Title: Re: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs
Post by LuxKiller65 on 21.08.05 at 20:20:06
Yes, the Orange and the Crystal have almost exactly the same cooling performance (the Crystal gets about 0,1°C cooler).

For your Voodoo3 3000 AGP: you can just leave the original heatsink on, but since the AGP variant has two mounting holes on the PCB (look close, the PCI doesn't have them!), you can remove the big silver one and go for a solution with a cooler.

That's what I'm trying to find, but be aware that finding a cooler for Voodoo cards isn't such an easy task!

;)

why not use a Zalman CU7000 :) They are cool and quiet , okay I must admit they cost alittle more, but they are sure worth thier cash  ;D

Post by LuxKiller65 on 22.08.05 at 07:01:37
Well, I have no more than 25mm in height inside my deadly machine named COMPAQ DESKPRO SFF (lol). That's why the Orange would be the hugely best option.

BTW Obi, the Dutch site which looks like it sells Orange Orbs doesn't have them anymore, just received their answer.  :'(

well the Orange Orb isn't that new at all really, maybe there are better sollutions, you might as well go for the Crystal Orbs, the ones that BFG3dfx noted on page 1 just go and order them from there:

Obi I was looking at that Zalman brand. Do you think this is compatable with a STB voodoo 3 3000 agp http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118216
It's a Zalman ZM80D-HP That looks like it can really cool off a graphics board, and like you, I'd rather pay a little more for something that works good.
If you know  that is compatable how would I go about removing the heatsink thats on the voodoo 3?

Thanx dude

Check this topic for how to remove a heatsink. I don't know if the mounting holes on a V3 3k AGP will fit; if not, you can always use the thermal/adhesive tape that'll come with the cooling solution (usually).

@Lucidtomr

i have a Zalman Heatpipe on a Powercolor Voodoo 3... it works on that card. And it should do it on generic Voodoo 3 as well!

Title: Re: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs
Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 23.08.05 at 11:53:52
@ TM30,

Lucidtomr also asked how to remove the original V3 heatsink, I was thinking by loosening the mounting clips, or is there aslo some adhessive thermal tape present?

Is that the Zalman CU7000 Heatpipe cooler, or am I alittle confused here?

But anyways the result gives a great look also, looks nice ;)

Title: Re: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs
Post by TM30 on 23.08.05 at 12:48:08
there is a thermal pad but if you pull out the clips the heatsink will go off very easy...

Zalman CNPS 7000 ?? you sure mean VF700

Title: Re: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs

yeah I did mean Zalman VF700 woops sorry there hehe :)

Title: Re: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs
Post by TM30 on 23.08.05 at 14:49:55
i think this cooler may be to close to the AGP port... because of the location of the mounting holes

Title: Re: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs

S**t, now I have a naked V4 and no heatsink/fan to put on it...

Title: Re: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs
Post by Lucidtomr on 24.08.05 at 13:49:35
TM30 My voodoo 3 3000 AGP looks much different than that picture. That picture looks fatter, and shorter. Looks like AGP 2x thou. But my VGA output is further on the inside.... just looks a lot different. Mine's STB.

Right now, I'm not gonna do anything with the heat sink.... My 450Mhz pc came today... all my parts fit nicely, including the voodoo 3 300 AGP I got. thou it has a problem booting up my hard drive, and I updated the Bios and now it won't even bootup.

So fixing my pc is top priority right now, this sux, worked but HDD didn't work, now doesn't work at all but potentially hard drive works now. Argh. I'll make a seperate topic about this later

my card is not made by STB, its from Powercolor. complete different PCB...:

Watch out for your mobo when using an AGP Voodoo3!

hey Lux, yea, I know. It's AGP 2x, not 4x like many motherboards are. I also know they tend to get hot so I have plenty of ventalation near it....
I can't currently use it now thou. My Bios went bad after updating from ECS's official site. I'm getting another one vile-n-heartless wanted to be a jek and bid on mine >:( , he didn't see the one below. http://cgi.ebay.com/ECS-P6BX-A-Pentium-III-Motherboard-Slot-1-WORKING_W0QQitemZ6796368724QQcategoryZ1244QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Now I know that these motherboards are picky about hard drives, and you can't trust ECS, as their downloads for drivers and bios can ruin your system, gotta use old hard drives, stuff between 850mb hard drives to 8.4gig hard drives.

Can anybody tell me the exact distance between the two holes one the PCB beside the GPU on a V3 3k AGP? Should be 5cm, need some verification.

THX

From the center of one hole to the center of the other, I get 57 millimeters. (that's on an STB pcb)

Title: Re: Thermaltake Orange and Golden Orbs
Post by LuxKiller65 on 05.09.05 at 20:15:46
That's crazy!

All the BGA coolers are 50mm, all holes on gfx cards are 50mm BUT those on 3dfx cards are 57 or 60mm...

COME ON, I mean...

>:(

I'll do the right holes with a gun now 'cause I'm sick just to have spent $$$ to import an Orange ORb...
