Title: Voodoo 3 3000 AGP heatsink
Post by mirage111 on 04.12.14 at 13:28:44
I've noticed about two types of heatsink in 3000 AGP cards. The one with holes to attach it to the card and the one without.

My card has the holed heatsink and I allways thought it was the sole model. What about the other? Does anyone knows?

To illustrate,

model with holes:

And without:

The difference probably has financial reasons; the regular card needs 'expensive*' push-pins, 'expensive' sticky thermal pad and 'expensive' holes drilled in the heatsink, whereas the other card only needs thermal glue.

*One push-pin is not expensive, but if you need ten thousand of them...

I have only one Voodoo3 without holes in the heatsink and it's PCB is dated 16th week of 2000. All the other Voodoo3 3000's with holes are older, from first quarter to fourth quarter of 1999.

Understood, so cards with drilled heatsink are older and cards with sticked heatsink are newer, and they made it for finalcial reasons. That makes sense.

I also remember I've seen a card without holes and with a "Made in China" sticker instead of "Product of Mexico" sticker. Is that possible?

Yes, that is possible. My 'undrilled' Voodoo3 has a 'Made in China' sticker. Also noticeable is it's orange capacitor rather than the regular solid state cap. See thandor.net - Voodoo 3 3000 AGP for pictures :).
