Title: Voodoo5 doesnt use agp x2!??
Post by grunw on 29.06.04 at 22:54:12
I recently found an information that Voodoo's 5 should be used with standard AGP speed (no x2/x4) and that even when setting agp x2 in 3dfxtools and bios it will still use the normal speed (x1), is it true?

You can check the information at:

The voodoo5 doesn't even do AGP1x

You can check the information at:

The V5 have not support to AGPx2 or AGP4x. It works to AGP1x (PCI66MHx). Is to say, it is no true Agp! ;)

Unfortunately, this is true.  :( IMHO, it wasn't really worth creating the AGP solution of the V5.

However, why was this move employed? Why didn't they design true AGP 2x or 4x for this card?

Because the chip doesn't support it, plain and simple.

Why didn't they build a chip that supported it then? ::) as even 3dfx knew AGP 4x was the way ahead!  ;)

Because the VSA series was based/built off of the Voodoo architecture, which was natively PCI.

I really dunno why in many places I find the following then.

[...]
667Mtexels/s fill rate
1X/2X/4X AGP with full sideband support
2Kx2K maximum texture size support
[...]

Kinda confusing

Because it physicly can fit in a universal agp 2.0 slot [agp 1x/2x/4x]

Yep, but at that time people really didn't know better.

Only a handful of 4xAGP Voodoo5 5500 boards exist in the hands of a few Collectors.
All "normal" Voodoo5's are 3.3V 1/2x AGP only.

Thanks to all for your replies and wise information!   ::)

Any single 3dfx chip solution can support up to 4x AGP.  (The Voodoo4 supports AGP 4x) The reason why the V5 or 6000 cannot is do to the SLI architechture must be used over a PCI bus for SLI. It is in fact an AGP card however, but doesnt support the full featureset (AGP texturing). The advantage of an AGP V5 over a PCI version is its full support for a 66mhz AGP bus. Real world performance numbers dont show a difference however.

@janskjaer

For some reason every time i scroll up/down the forum and there is a post from you, my browser (win98se ie5) slows down to a nearly complete freeze, i suspect it has something to do with your signature image/script. Please turn off whatever that thing is. And guys if you see janskjaer around this forum tell him!

@grunw - update to IE6 or just use Firefox. ::)

I have NO PROBLEMS with jaskjaer's sig image (even though he's changed it about three times already! Make yer' mind up mate!) :P

Also, it depends on the spec. of your machine... ;)

IE5 works fine, dont want to do it  :P

Why upgrade a working browser to get more stupid and senseless java features and such idiot things?

I'm using FireFox, and (as of now) don't have a Problem with the .gif Image...

PS.
FireFox mainly stands for "safer & smarter browsing", which neither IE Version ever offered, but Internet Security is percieved (if aware at all) different by every User ;)

Well i must agree that IE "security" is crap if any. I have EVERYTHING DISABLED, from scripts of any kind to everything imaginable, and I'm still able to get some trojans in when visiting rare sites (I mean veeery weird sites ^_^)

Well, let's settle with "anything but IE" *g*

Guess that's the main Point ;)
