Sad to see such a classic site go.

I know that there are (very imperfect) web archives.  But there ought to be a law that sites can't ever be removed once established.  I mean the written word has, historically, been quite enduring except for the occasional fire in a classic library.  But on the Internet everything is so ephemeral.  Nothing lasts.

So all the places I used to go to, like Tom Sanner's Mr Doom site, vanish and are never seen again.   Cry

The Internet should go on generating new stuff.  But it would be nice if the old stuff could remain too.  8)

What is POD Underground?

I have never come across it.
I have a copy of POD Gold (the 'MMX enhanced' labelled version).  I bought it because I heard it supported Glide, but I haven't tried it out yet as the 3dfx rig isn't up yet.

The best way to find out is to download the zip file and have a look yourself, assuming you have the bandwidth.

POD Underground is a general resource site for POD users in much the same way that this site is a resource for 3dfx users.  In fact, POD Underground has specific information concerning the 3dfx versions of POD, and that is what prompted me to make the initial post since so many FalconFly regulars are obviously fond of the game.

Hmm...
I downloaded the Package for archival purposes.

Although I could host it, it sure wouldn't be an alive continuation of the old site (I never played POD myself), and there would be noone to maintain it Sad

@janskjaer, could you please tell me if your version of pod has any kind of music? According to a file in the pod dir it should have music as cda tracks. I bought pod gold on the cover cd from the german pc-power magazine. I always tought they stripped the music to get room for demos, patches and their menu system.

Regards,
Andreas

I would be interested to see this 3dfx version of POD. Last time I saw it, the size of the archive was more than 50 Mb, right? However, chances are diminishing to find out this upgrade, so I might give it a try this time. The archive is posted on the 3dfx archive, or are there any plans on doing this?

The POD Underground archive download is about 18 MB.  If you are looking for patches and other updates, you might try Ubi Soft:

ftp://ftp.ubisoft.com/

POD and Game Service files are scattered about the site.

There are also threads at VOGONs concerning POD, for example:

Hi nudgegoonies,
What am I looking for here?  I don't have the game installed as I only have WinXP on my current machine (I doubt POD GOLD would work for WinXP as it wasn't designed for it so I didn't bother installing it) and my 3dfx rig is still not up yet.

I have the CD in the cupboard though, so if you let me know what you are looking for, I will let you know.

I have put the CD in my drive and there is one audio CD track on it, which is 17 minutes and 17 seconds long! Just the one track, sounds like all the music was combined for the game perhaps? ???

If you were thinking of other music files that are on the CD, tell me the file extension and I'll do a search. Wink

The POD GOLD CD is labelled: 'POD GOLD - GB (For my country I guess) - Export (Don't know what this is for?  ???)

Hi janskjaer,
thanks for checking the cd. Now i know that in my version the audiotrack is stripped by the magazine. I found a file in the DATA\BINARY\RESSON\ dir called CDAREF.TXT. According to this file POD should have 2 Audio Tracks. There is also a MIDIREF.TXT in the same dir with references to 2 midifiles which aren't present on my cd.

It would be a great help for me if you could make a snapshot of all files on the cd (with DIR /S >C:\PODCD.TXT in the CD root directory from the dospromt for example). Them i could check for other differences. There are already many differences between POD and POD Gold. And not to forget all those bundled and magazine version. The PODCD.TXT file could be a bit to big to post so you should send it as a private message.

Regards,
Andreas

I will check this out for you over the weekend (if I have time, hopefully).

I'll see what I can come up with.  Wink

I wasn't aware there were any MIDI files on the CD, but as I said, I will check this out and see what I come up with!
