New project : Voodoo5 6000 rev.3700A WaterCooling edition.

Step by step :

- Waterblocks :

That is the coding that allows the machine to make that logo on front waterblock

Delrin + Copper

... In Development ...

Thank you ;) one picture updated.
I just customize one front waterblock.
I want to write "3dfx Voodoo5 6000" on it.

Now this is a useful modification :)

Front and Back water-block? Does not make sense to me. The front solution should be enough, I don't think that the memory on the back need to be cooled.

Who is doing the solution for you? -> http://liquid-extasy.de ???

I need to dissipate heat from :

- Front and Back VSA-100
- Front and Back Sdrams
- Hint chip

It's really important to extract heat from both sides of the card
otherwise it will not cool very well.
It's not http://liquid-extasy.de.
Thanks for your support ;)

Does the memory get that warm?

Cooling HiNT -> Check
Cooling VSA100 -> Check

I can't imagine that the sdram is a problem.

I think the front cooling is enough also for the VSA100. A good water-cooling does have enough power for heat dissipation.

Will the front and the back cooler be separate parts so each can work for themselves?

The sdrams creat heat like gpu and hint chip.
I think the front and back waterblocks will be joined to work together.

Voodoo5 6000 heatsinks removed

Hi trevormacro

hmm.. since you have allready remove those heatsinks, why you don't use peltier instead of water ? Water and computers do not fit in my opinion in same case.. ;)

If I was you and willing to get maximium of that card, I would use peltier elements. Messing with water do not help.

All you need is to isolate the back of the card, because it is otherwise in ice... Also needed 4 "cold plates" aluminium is good and ofcourse 4 peltier elements, 80 watts 40*40 elements.
In the "hot" side of peltiers you allready have that massive cooler, what I have seen in your pictures. That should work ok.

I remember when I use Peltier in Celeron 300 and I managed it running in 600 Mhz ... ;)

Why would you put peltier elements on the card? You'd spend 320Watts cooling a card that probably doesn't consume more than a quarter of that. :-?

To run the card at sub zero tempretures perhaps!

@Kokohemmo :

Hi,
I prefer to use watercooling for this card.
I think the max O/C for one v5k6 if heat is very good dissipate is 220 MHz because there is a limit of VSA-100 chip on rev.3700A.
I already start to buy all part for a watercooling kit.
We will see the results of this project.

@Quaker763 :

I just write on front waterblock 3dfx Voodoo5 6000. I don't think yet about colors.
I let you know.

Nope. With peltiers isn't so easy reach such temperatures as many of us are used to think. Peltiers efficiency is strictly dependent on the possibility to properly cool the hot side of the cell; the more you cool down the hot side, the more the cold side will reduce its temperature. So you need a good cooler.

Usually, the way to have the best efficiency from a peltier is to cool it....with water. In that case, you'd better to prepare the card for insulation.

I remember that gtxe already made a custom v56k waterblock, not sure but with good results

Post by trevormacro on 12.02.12 at 16:55:11
Just a quick sketch up of the card and what needs to be cooled.
the green is the pcb, the bright red is the HiNT chip, and the 4 squares are the GPU's.

The whole back of the card will be cooled.  One large block.  a large single piece of thermal tape will be used.

The one large sheet will touch every inch of the board and pull the heat off.

the chips themselves get hot. The back of the chips were probably getting hot from the lack of cooling on the top of them.

This rear block will take off any heat the top block will produce.  It will pull any heat off of every component that it touches.

A CAD model of the card.  Things to cool in black, and things to avoid in red, and the very limited holes in the board.

Basic overall shape :

The blue outline that is the funny shape is the copper
the black outline is the overall card.
The copper is what needs to be touching the chips, so I will avoid all those red areas.
The plastic is thick enough to just mill out depressions for the components.
So the black plastic will cover the entire card
giving you the sleek appearance of a seamless block.
A copper plate that touches the HiNT chip, GPU's and Ram.
Then the black plastic is a much larger piece that covers most of the card.
Each block will be 19mm thick.
V5k6 card is 1.6mm thick, and 19mm of copper and plastic on each side

You do realize that the memory, hint bridge chip and VSA-100 chips do not have the same height, right?

NitroX infinity wrote on 15.02.12 at 16:06:18:

Right ;)

Here are the heights of the following chips:

HiNT: 0.047"
RAM: 0.043"
GPU: 0.087"

Since the RAM, and HiNT chips are pretty much the same height, I have to remove some material above the GPU
OR....
1mm thermal pad is the same height that makes up the difference (1.03mm to be exact).

So,

Option A:

Remove 0.5mm off of the copper above the GPU's and get 0.5mm thermal pads for the RAM and HiNT chips...

Opiton B:

Remove no copper, and get 1mm thermal pads for the RAM, and HiNT

Conclusion :

The GPU's are what requires the most cooling. The ram and HiNT are secondary.
Best contact with GPU's will be removing no copper.
and getting the thicker 1mm thermal pad.
The solution is option B.

All of my stuff (WaterCooling kit).
I can't put into words, how powerful just one of those fans are.
I will have to screw this thing to a table.
I firmly believe that the radiator will levitate if all three are on.
I am still speechless from the power of a single fan.
I have all the power imaginable, and it sounds like a jet starting up :)

Thanks for your support Comisarul :)

Perhaps It will be finished next week.

I have good news and bad news.  The bad news is the O-ring sealing didnt work.  Thats a simple fix-i will seal it with a silicone gasket sealant along with the O-rings.  So thats really not a big issue.  It will never ever leak.
The good news is the block is very effective.  when i was doing the leak test i pumped some cold water and the block instantly got very cold. The performance of these blocks are very good!

I came up with an idea to make a seperate plate for it with the logo. I attached a pic of the 0.25" plate.  The logo will go on that plate to give it some personality.

Still have to seal the main block and clean it up a little bit.

Need to test the complete Watercooling system with the card to see if there are no leaks.

After all, V5k6 card will be to come in my home.

I can purchase a special role of tape so I can remove it whenever I want.
I can purchase some extra tape to stick the rear plate on waterblock.
That is a very easy solution.

How much does it weight? Looks very heavy. What are you using to reduce stress on the agp connector?

Sorry I make a mistake about the weight it's for the complete package...
Only for the Waterblocks it's approx. between 2 and 3 kg.

Wow, what a crazy project.  That is one awesome looking V5 6K.  The copper inlay on the 3Dfx logo is really sharp looking.  Why no copper inlay for the back plate?

Also, have you considered giving you setup a proper home in a full tower case?  I think if you can find the right low-profile back plate, you should be able to install your 6K + adapter in a regular case.

No copper in the back plate because just want it like that.
I am not considered a proper tower case but I am looking for a new amazing motherboard this month...very hard to find and buy it.
Goods ideas you have but now I don't have too much money.
Thanks for your support...

Hi Michel,

Little dissapointed with max O/C you got there. It is low for a watercooling system. I guess something there is wrong. Even you handled an O/C over 200MHz with air cooling...

Best regards,
Oscar.

Two solutions:

- Tubes are too long between two waterblocks. Need to be optimized...

- The originals 6 ns Tsop Sdrams limit the o/c of the V5k6.

In my country,

- The Voodoo5 6000 Gold Edition work @200 MHz max with news 3,5 ns Tsop sdrams.

- The Voodoo5 6000 Watercooling Edition work @200 MHz max with originals 6 ns Tsop sdrams.

Same speed for the 2 cards :)

What do you think?

very nice.. when you went passed teh 200mhz was it a matter of artifacting or would it refuse to run at anything over 200?

@201 MHz, quake 3 benchmark demo001 runs and in the middle the screen freeze! Need to reboot...

Very nice job, congratulations.

You get more air through the radiator when your not trying to force it through the desk as well  :).

I think we can rule out overheating.

Maybe 201mhz is the maximum on the supplied voltage to the chips. Is there a volt mod?

Yes,
There is no volt mod on this card.
Who can say me if there is a max frequency of original 6ns sdrams?

Thanks in advance

6ns SDRAM is specified to run at 166MHz, so 201MHz is a good result after all.

As I wrote many posts ago I don't think you will get much better results with that watercooling. Even the two big heatsink you mounted on your V6k with 3,5ns memory are pure overkill when it comes to the temperature ;)

But it does look good.

Yes I think these waterblocks are good but it's limited by sdrams in frequency when I o/c the card.
We will see with the second watercooling edition...

With a normal 6k 6ns I got 204MHz in 3DMark2001SE with no extra cooling in winter with the card in the yard. So, Not sure your card is limited for 6ns as it is limited for the heat though.

Yes, It's difficult to be sure...

Title: Re: 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 First WaterCooling Edition

Well,
Could it be a limitation of the PCB design ? After all to achieve high frequencies (183+) with the Voodoo3 series, 3dfx did a special PCB for the 3500...
Or a limitation of the VSA100 itself as it was construct with a 183mhz target ?

Title: Re: 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 First WaterCooling Edition
Post by Loeschzwerg on 24.04.12 at 07:59:42
Winter temperatures and a waterblock are different things. The waterblock only cools the memory, the VSAs and the HiNT, but not the card itself. At least the card/PCB does not get as cool as with winter temperatures.

But it might be also one of the VSA is limiting or the whole design isn't running synch at that high frequency?! To much leakage current could also cause problems, like Narmounet indirectly noted. A Rev 3900 could be a better player when it comes to overclocking.

Hi

Great work Trevo and good videos...

Just wondering, that when you allready have these cool looking massive heat blocks, go to Peltier...

If you want to know, how far VSA and memory can go in Voodoo5 6000, Peltier is the answer.

No messing around with water, because your settings are allready good looking, so go in to deep ICE ... :)
