Title: Getting the most out of a Voodoo3?
Post by runey on 30.07.03 at 11:18:20
I'm setting up a computer for my nephew put together from stuff I had lying around :) The specs are

Asus A7V-133C Motherboard
AMD Athlon 1200MHz (Overclocked at 1333MHz)
128Meg PC133 RAM (May increase to 256 - 384)
Creative Vibra128 Sound Card
and most importantly Voodoo3 3000 Video Card :D
Oh and running Windows98SE and DirectX9.0b

I have loaded the AmigaMerlin 2.9 drivers (which seem fine, unless someone can suggest better)
I have loaded MiniGL 1.49 drivers (Is there something better around than these?)

I have also installed V.Control 1.81b (Koolsmoky) so that I can overclock/tweak the voodoo3.

My main problem is that there are so many options, both under hardware and environmental, that I don't know what the best settings would be. I'm not after raw performance, I would prefer a balance between performance and visual quality.

Hope someone can help or point me to a site / tutorial that can answer my questions.

FalconFly great site by the way :D

Hi !

I recommend you use V.Control. When you start V.Control, you will see two tabs. Click on Environment Settings. Then choose preset Fastest and click on Apply. Now I would set OpenGL HSR to Disable, alpha-blending to smooth and 3D filter quality to 2x2 box.

If you have got refresh problems in DirectX games, enable sync to vertical refresh.

Regards

FYI, in many cases this decreases performance.

Thanks Fedaykin :)

I benchmark between each change to check for improvement and stability. So I'll keep an eye on what affect that option has.

Made the changes in V.Control :) Didn't make much difference though :( Oh well

One other thing. There are several options under Device Configuration.

- AGP enable (ON)
- AGP 1x / 2x (2x)
- support addresses over 4Gb (ON)
- AGP sideband (ON)
- Max AGP commands 1 - 8 (1)
- Palette Snoop (OFF)

Can you tell me if these are the best settings to use?

Thanks again for your help.

Well, I would leave the settings alone. Especially Palette Snoop : leave it off !

You could try to set Max AGP commands to 8, but be aware of stability issues.
