dead voodoo cards?
11.12.07 at 23:05:43
Hi guys. This is my first time on here. I've been wanting to get a classic gaming computer together, and I have a Voodoo1 and a Voodoo2 card I could use. However, I think both of my cards are toast. I can't seem to get either one working properly. For the Voodoo1, nothing happens at all when I try to run a Glide game, except the monitor goes into standby mode. For my Voodoo2, I got Mechwarrior 2:Mercenaries (with 3d accelerator patch) running, but everything including the rotating 3dfx logo is drastically discolored. Everything looks to be pink or purple, like my old CGA computer. I just downloaded different drivers for the Voodoo2 to try, but I'm starting to think they are both toast. Any input guys?

Just to be clear; you have your cables hooked up right?
Loop-through cable from 2D card to Voodoo card and monitor on Voodoo card?

Of course. I've had these long enough to remember. I do have two different passthrough cables, but I can't remember if I tried both of them or not. I'll try everything again after finals.

Sounds like you need to run the clean sweep utility that comes with the Voodoo2 drivers. This will get rid of the conflicting Voodoo1 drivers. Then reload the Voodoo2 drivers.
Be nice to NitroX, he is only trying to help

Thanks gamma, I'll try that when I get a chance. I'll actually probably just reload the OS for a clean slate. I wasn't trying to be mean to NitroX. Everyone can do stupid stuff like not hooking stuff up, so I'm glad he asked!

Ok, finally got around to testing both of them, and guess what? They both work!!! I don't know what my problem was before.... For the V1, I put a clean windows 95 install and just used the drivers from the CD that came with the card. Worked like a charm! The V2 was a little more difficult, since I just slapped together another computer to test it as I didn't want any driver issues on the Vaio. After getting rid of a BSD on boot up, I loaded the reference drivers and it looks like it works fine! Time to find another one for some SLI fun! Didn't someone say that you can just use a floppy cable (without the twist) to connect two Voodoo2 cards? Thanks for your help and suggestions guys.
