Ratbag Powerslide

Since a number of people have expressed an interest in compiling a list of Glide games, I thought I would share some specific information on a few of the more obscure Glide games that I own.  Please do the same for games that you have.

The third game I will spotlight is Ratbag's Powerslide which is published by Infogrames.  Here is how the game's readme.txt file (Version 1.4) describes the game:

The year is 2020. After an environmental holocaust of devastating proportions,
the population hovers slightly above the zero mark. The rich have fled to the
underground, where they have formed corporate enclaves. Above ground the
desolate cities and desert wastelands are inhabited by a feral population of
freaks and survivors. With 98% of the population dead there's a lot of cars
around just waiting to get driven into the ground. The ferals started the
Powersliding competition, the corporates banned it.

It's dangerous, it's illegal, it kicks butt.

Powerslide is extreme off-road racing.

Here are the system requirements:

Minimum System requirements:

  Operating System: Windows® 95, Windows® 98
  Intel Pentium® or 100% compatible
  16 MB RAM
4xCD ROM drive with sound card connection
High Colour (16-colour) capable video card (DirectX compatible)
110 MB of free Hard Disk space
  Direct Sound compatible sound card.
  DirectX 6
  100% Compatible Mouse

Recommended configuration:

  Intel Pentium® 166MMX or better
  32 MB RAM
300 MB of free Hard Disk space
  Accelerators: 3DFX® Voodoo, Voodoo II or Banshee (supported by Glide); I740;
ATI Ragepro Turbo; Matrox Mystique, G100 or G200; PowerVR2; Riva 128,
    TNT; Rendition V1000, V2100 or V2200; S3 Savage3D, Virge GX-GX2 or DX;
or other AGP Direct 3D card.
DirectSound3D, Aureal3D and EAX compatible sound cards
  DirectX compatible force feedback devices
  AMD K6-2 3DNow optimization supported

The readme.txt file indicates the following concerning graphics options:

If you have a 3DFX® card (eg Voodoo, Voodoo II), then Powerslide will default
to use Glide 2.x. Ensure that you have a recent version of Glide 2.x for your
3DFX card, or Powerslide may fail to work correctly. If you have a Voodoo II,
you MUST have version 2.5 or newer. For a Voodoo, version 2.43 or newer is
recommended. 3DFX drivers can be downloaded from http://www.3dfx.com/

Due to problems with the 3DFX Banshee drivers at the time of this build,
Powerslide will automatically detect a Banshee and use a different yet less
optimal texture management system. If you have newer drivers in which this
problem has been fixed, run 'powerslide -forceglide2' from an MSDOS prompt
in the Powerslide installation directory to force Powerslide to use the
non Banshee-specific system.

...

Once the game has initialised and selected its default graphics driver
(ie Glide, Direct3D or Software), you can change the graphics driver between
what is available in your system from within the gameshell. If you have both
a 3DFX card and a Direct3D card, by default you will not be able to run
Direct3D. This is due to conflicts between the two APIs (Glide and Direct3D).
If you wish to run Direct3D, either disable your 3DFX card, or run
'powerslide -forced3d' from an MSDOS prompt in the Powerslide installation
directory, which will force Direct3D as the default hardware graphics driver.

I have had no difficulty running the game with my Voodoo5.

You can find links to the 9 megabyte demo at the following site:

For reference purposes, my system has the following components:

   Soyo SY-7VCAE Motherboard
Intel Pentium III  933 MHz Socket 370 Processor
   3dfx Voodoo5 64MB AGP Graphics Adapter
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Platinum (Model SB4760P)
   256 MB SDRAM
   Microsoft Windows 98 SE
