Voodoo 1 + 2 on 1.0GHz plus systems
28.10.07 at 23:02:32

Hi there, I'm new to the forums but have spent some considerable time having a look through them.

So now onto the topic:

I was talking to someone about running my Voodoo 2 SLI cards on a 1.33GHz Athlon, to which they strongly recommended not doing so as it wouldn't work. Apparently Voodoo 1 and 2 cards are speed sensitive and tend to lock up with processors that run beyond 1.0GHz. I've taken their advice and decided to put the V2's in my 500MHz K6-III rig, an easy decision considering my 'new' Voodoo 5 is due to arrive and I will use that instead.

However (you knew it was coming), I have had a couple of friends who have run V2's on hardware far beyond the 1.0GHz barrier. One ran it with a 1.4GHz Athlon, the other ran an SLI setup on a heavily overclocked Celeron Tualatin at 1.73GHz. Apparently neither experienced lock-ups of any kind, although both suffered dead cards after a while. In the case of the latter, I think his overclocking frenzy was probably the culprit.

So what I want to know is what other people have experienced in terms of running Voodoo 1 and 2 cards in systems that exceed the GHz barrier.

Been running v1 on a tualatin 1.3 and a v2 sli on a axp-m 2400+ (barton) @2.1Ghz. All card working for years without a problem. Maybe your friends are not aware with the word "pci lock" and their o/ced pcs run on pci (and agp) free systems thus 100 to 133 or 133 and above buses comes with the respective pci/agp increase = pretty bad for voodoos. Otherwise on pci/agp locked systems or with the correct dividers for master bus freqs (like 100/133/166/200) there is no problem with either v1 or v2 or with any freq above 1ghz.

it seems like you can run a voodoo2 on any intel chipset with no problems, ranging from the ancient 440bx up to the latest boards for core2duo cpus.note that nforce chipsets are not compatible, they work very bad (or not at all).

as for via,I have personally tested v2SLI on many chipsets (from kt133 up to kt880),and always had stability problems on anything newer than kt266-the pc would lock up randomly when running a glide/opengl application (with the time of successfull operation ranging from instant lockup after launch up to 12hours of flawless gameplay)..

the latest ati/amd chipsets are untested as far as I know..if I get my hands on such a pc (repairs, new builds for friends/family,I get that a lot Tongue),I'll be sure to check things out..

voodoo1 is even more picky,I was not able to succesfully operate a voodoo1 on anything newer than p3/k6,although some users have reported success with celerons over 1GHz as well..

That's very interesting. I've just acquired a KT266A based motherboard and actually have an aditional set of 8Mb Voodoo 2's made by Creative. I reckon with the Athlon drivers this should work fine. I don't think I have anything to lose by trying in any case Smiley

To outlaw, my friend was using a BX based motherboard and I have enough confidence in his technical abilities to be sure he was using the correct dividers if possible.  However, he was fond of messing with the capacitors on the motherboard in an effort to attain higher clockspeeds and I don't have the confidence that he didn't cause damage mucking around with them Cheesy

On one I was testing had no problems with a Voodoo Graphics running on a BX with a 1.0 Celeron, however when I tried to run the same board on a 1800+ AMD it would hang on the driver install despite numorus attempts.

One of the board members noted that this was a common issue related to CPU speed and we have a thread here somewhere covering it.

On the V2 I'm not 100% postive and will defer to others who have run the boards on faster platforms.

Well my matched pair of maxi gamer V2's are going in my K6-III box and I'll dabble with the creatives on the KT266 and see how I fare. If it locks up, I've been warned and I won't pull my hair out. If it works I'll use it as another Voodoo rig for my multiplayer Quake sessions Smiley I am wondering if specific drivers may be called for. I've got a set that are apparently optimised for Athlon processors.

Having had a gander in the forums, I'm also seriously considering looking for heatsinks to put on my V2's. I'd hate for them to die on me through overheating. Any thoughts?
