Passive cooling for v5-5500

Hi there. Does anyone of you own a passive cooled v5? Is this safe for the chips? Can you recommend any specific cooler fitting the chip/card? Is this:

a safe way to remove original heatsinks? Is it a desecration?

I used to have my V5 5500 AGP passively cooled. Only worked in 2D. Whenever I'd start a 3D game the card would become too hot.
I didn't have any casefans so I don't know if that would make the card work without fans itself.
I used Zalman ZM-NB32 northbridge heatsinks.

Ok, and what about removing the heatsinks?

You need a flathead screwdriver and something flat that's hard, a piece of metal or plastic.
You put the tip of the screwdriver beneath the heatsink and the piece of metal or plastic between the screwdriver and the pcb (to prevent damage).
This is a video from GDonovan, after he had the card in a sealed anti-static bag in the freezer for a couple of minutes.

You can also do it without the freezer (as I did) but then I would suggest to pop the heatsink slightly on all sides.

Is it 100% safe?

Hello.
If you want, you may use my workaround for removing the original heatsinks.
http://pct.gotdns.org/~stephan/~hpage/computer-und-3dfx/3dfx/3dfx-v5-5500-passiv...
Its written in german, but if you have any questions, I translate it for you.
Passive cooling a V5 5500 is not a problem, as long as you can make sure a good ventilation in the computer housing. I run this card passive cooled without any problems.
Greetings
