Voodoo2 growing pains...

OK, I got this Pentium 4 machine,
I'm running Win2k SP4,
I already have DX 9c installed Cry

I got a 9800Pro in the AGP,
I got a brand new (I just openned it) V2 1000 PCI STB Voodoo2 installed,
I installed the 1.02.00 drivers for Win2k,
restarted,
and I get torn bitmaps, missing icon graphics, and boxy white squares after logging-in and Glide games may run but don't show Cry

Questions:
Should I blow my brains out now and be done with it?
Should I sacrifice my 9800P and just reinstall my Voodoo4 (works fine with above setup)?
Should I reinstall 2K and stick with DX8.1b?
Should I give up 3dfx and get a life/wife at age 35?

I have no direction, and I'm sinking fast...

Your V2 drivers have overwritten some dll's that are no longer compatible with W2k SP4. Get another driver! Uninstalled DX9c using Happy Unistaller and reverted back to DX7,
Driver Cleaner Pro'ed the old 3dfx drivers,
Reinstalled the 1.02.00 drivers for Win2k,
Problem was still there when rebooted,
PS: RUNDLL for some glide program uses 99% system resources until a forced end-task from a 3-fingered-salute.

So I Driver Cleaner Pro'ed the old 3dfx drivers again,
Installed FastVoodoo2 4.0,
rebooted (no window's graphic's problems) but,
Now for any Glide app, this error is generated:

"grsstwinopen: need to use a valid window handle"

and glide does not execute and/or program exits.

I suppose that it could be that Voodoo2 just can't run on Windows 2000. I thought I did this a few years ago but now I'm not sure. What I need is for someone who is currently successfully running a V2 with W2KP setup to tell me that this effort can be done and:

1). what Service Pack to use?
2). what Voodoo2 driver to use?
3). what DX version to use?

And that would greatly help my efforts to get this working, baseline, regress, give-up, etc.

Hmm...

There were numerous reports of Voodoo2 owners being troubled when coupled with a Radeon9800 (for whatever reasons). Looking at the big picture, the failures included the Voodoo1 as well, all happening when being used with anything from Radeon9500 and upwards.

Seems some part of all recent (=upto ~1 year old) Catalyst Drivers does something the Voodoo Driver architecture doesn't like.

I basically don't have feedback on it at all, but the "LegendgrafiX VoodooMage 2.2.0" Voodoo2 Driver supposedly fixes some Problems arising from the V2/Radeon combination.

Otherwise (if an official Catalyst is used), it may be worth a shot trying an ATI OmegaDriver or DNA Driver instead.

Ahhh...now that would explain some things big time! I was wondering why I was getting those problems at startup since the Voodoo2 shouldn't be doing anything (and I suppose the driver should have been quiet too) just when Windows starts up into the desktop.

Thanks for the heads up, the next shot is to try a different AGP card combo.

try installing the latest fastvoodoo2 drivers with the radeon compatible glides.that fixed all the desktop mess for me and my radeon9800pro (remove all voodoo2 drivers,install fastvoodoo2,install the radeon glides,reboot,report back)..

btw,legendgrafix is a real ALPHA,dont install it unless you are a very experienced voodoo2 user (or if you love to reinstall windows).

Wow, yeah that seems to have fixed it. Just when I was about to ditch my 9800 card. I reinstalled DX9c, re-ran the 2K updates, wiped off the old voodoo2 drivers, used a reg cleaner to re-wipe and clean (just in case), was about to throw my old voodoo4 back in, and then I saw you post.

So I re-downloaded the fastvoodoo2 4.0 (ge) and the radeon glide, installed fastvoodoo, rebooted, applied the fix, copied the radeon glide to the system32 folder, and crossed my fingers. And Starsiege ran! I was amazed, almost gave up.

Seems that the voodoo2 rendering performance is a bit slower than the voodoo4. I knew the V4 trumps the V2 but I didn't think I would see the difference.

Thanks for all your help people! Now I'm not sinking as fast Cheesy
