Title: Wicked3D is down for good
Post by FalconFly on 17.12.02 at 21:44:41
...and another 3dfx related Site down :(

I couldn't access the Site for several days now, and Google's Cache revealed the following last Update before it went offline :

WELCOME TO WICKED3D

We no longer sell any Wicked3D Products

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused

----------------------------------
As this happened without warning, the search to secure Wicked3D Files has begun...
All that can be found will find it's way into the Archive, to offer a useful mirror of what was available. Probably will deserve their own section, just like Quantum...

Well, i don't know much about Wicked3D except that they sold 3DFX Boards and made the great WickedGL that evey Voodoo user who runs OGL games should know. But searching for files to make a complete archive is really hard work if not impossible. We always trust that if your HD crashed or if you have old hardware where you need drivers for, that you find it in the internet. But if the company passed away their server is gone and then try to find someone who has made a valuable mirrror. Sometimes you sit housrs surfing through google and ftpsearch on lycos while tesing combinations of a filename and you find nothing. This includes drivers, old games (look at the-underdogs.org how impossible it is to find an old 1987 game of a defunct company) and also mainstream things like Linux-stuff. I serached housrs to find a file for my Mandrake Linux 7.1 (thats from august 200) but therer is no more mirror of this distribution in the net. Sometimes the great internet is more like a black hole than a "Valuable Source" as stated everywhere. It is always told that the internet is de-central but this afffects only technic of the servers and not the data lying on it. We always trust it is still there but the loss is only one hd-bump away...

I hope you can find all stuff you need for the archive falconfly!

Regards,
Andreas

Well, I hope www.archive.org will help, although it's full of restrictions.

Slow, sometimes unaccessible, not all Links archived, and Files >1MB are truncated ::)

My Version of Mandrake 7.1 is a cover CD from a german Linux-magazine. They left some RPM's away to put some other stuff on it. Some files i have found in the Update-Directory on a mandrake mirror in newer versions. But there is no mirror of the distribution CD anymore. There are still some RPM's that weren't updated and where 7.2 Version-RPM's are not compatible with. Do you know a mirror of this dist? I have SCSI and SOUND problems with kernels greater 2.4. Thats the reason why i don't use RedHat 7.1 lying around in the corner. And Mandrake is much more comfortable.

Andreas

Thanks for the tip Falconfly. But even this engine can't find the file i'm searching for. I tried a filename from the update directory but it coudn't find it too. I thik this searchengine is web-only and doesn't look on ftp-servers.

I was on the Wicked3D site some months ago and when i remeber right the highest version of WGL was 3.01. I havn't checked the versions of the 3d-glasses software.

Andreas

Thanks for the url patience. I tried to log on the server the last housrs but it was always timed out. Maybe to uch traffic. i'll try another day.

Regards,
Andreas

P.S.
Interesting how fast after a company goes off business their software goes abandonware  ;)

Hmpf...

I attempted to contact someone at this company via EMail, but their Domain has already been completely deactivated (no DNS Resolution) :(

Not even www.archive.org can help here, as all the public EMail addresses were registered to wicked3d.com :P

In case anyone has a valid Wicked3D EMail whom I could contact, would be very nice to receive (time is running out I'm afraid).

Because the way it looks like, finding and securing all Wicked3D Drivers will be (once again) a puzzle, that might never be complete.

Lucky as we are, Patience has collected alot of stuff (*g*), and it includes alot of Drivers as well :)

I knew that WickedGL wasn't being sold any longer.  But I didn't know that the whole site had gone. :( :( :(

Little by little all the places I valued on the Internet are whittled away.  Who remembers Mr.Doom's (aka Tom Sanner's) site?  It, like most of the prime stuff, isn't archived by web.archive.org.  Gradually the virtual world is shrinking.

And, with all the prime download sites (3dfiles anyone?) either disappearing or being bought out and integrated into paying concerns, the Internet is slowly being corporatised.

And nudgegoonies is right.  How can so many files disappear when there are all those millions of terabytes of distributed storage?  But it's true.  People "clean out" the "old" stuff and we can lose irreplacable files forever.

I paid for my copy of WickedGL.  I'm glad I did.  At least I tried to reward them for all those years of free gaming support. :-/

Maybe you could ask a Wicked-3D rep. if it would be possible to get a registered version(err...if you manage to contact any of them) :(

I mean they aren't selling it anymore... :P

So maybe? ???

Or if we could find a 'default' KEY (so we don't distribute our personal keys)? ???

I dunno? There's a few possibilities I guess... :P

Whatcha' think? ???

Yeah, I found it... apparently, the day before the site went down. :P

If anybody still wants it, PM me.

I've been looking for Wicked3D contact info, but haven't found anything. I think it would be cool if we could get the source code released. :)

Thanks for the offer, but I cannot offer any registered Versions (with Key) ::)

I went through the US patent website and the US copyright website and didn't find any listings for wickedGL. Is it a US company?

Hmmm...

I'm not 100% sure if is was registered in the US.

Anyway, since the mother company MetaByte is still active, they should hold all relevant patents (I guess)....

To bad they never replied to my EMail :(

Yeah, I emailed Metabyte as well, with the same result. :(

I am writing them a snail-mail letter and will physically send it to them. I hope they won't ignore that. It's along the lines of "WickedGL isn't making you any money any more, it isn't even being sold, could you please make the full version publically available? Oh, BTW, it could be cool if you could release the source code as well, there is still a small community of 3Dfx-ers who would love to have it."

Of course, a bit more formal than that.

The company that distributed WickedGL was called Wicked3D. The parent company is called MetaByte.

Just like the source code, after repeated attempts to get 'clearance' to do this, I've just given up. I hope both Wicked3D & the man to which this serial number belongs don't mind.

If I am contacted by anyone to pull this file, as with the source code, I will gladly and quickly cooperate and pull the files.

The "Credits" file that is included was to throw people off, back when I started distributing this file.

Dont know if this help, can this card driver be of any help to you ???

Title: Re: Wicked3D is down for good
Post by Lecram25 on 27.06.03 at 23:02:49
I doubt that's what they need. I think that's just the company who distributes the card, i.e. Hercules, Gigabyte, Asus, etc.

If anyone is looking for the full version of WickedGL as well as with a reg code, visit NuAngel's website. He has posted the latest one with the reg code.  ;)

Yes, but this might be a job for a Hex-Editor, to modifiy the Vendor ID (I would reckon it checks it Driver-side).

At least one positive Side/potential of Hex-Editing, unlike some other, recent "jobs" :P ;)

According to this page -

http://www.longbow.co.uk/lb2/faq.html

someone once hacked the Wicked3D drivers to work with other Voodoo2s.  This was done since the Wicked3D drivers had the facility to force games to run at resolutions different to their default one.  In this case Longbow 2 (I'm a pacifist but I love this game... but then I drive carefully and I love Carmageddon  ;D ) is made to run at a higher resolution than 640x480.

However, despite searching most assiduously, I've turned up nothing on this.  :(

Can't help but drop this line in:

Quote:
this file was available (in first, i think) on a Site which disappeared since (Pa3PyX's Homepage)

That's because he got it from me back when I only had it on my site, but told FEW people about it...  I let the URL circulate on it's own.  But after a while, I just decided to announce that I was distributing 3.02 Retail, just as I distributed the 3dfx driver Souce Code, and I may once again distirbute some 'abandonware source code' that I cannot mention just yet. ;)

I'll tell you one thing though: it has less to do with PC's than one might think.   :-X
