Being a moderator should to be a paid position as much work as you have to put into it. Find a good one, they're worth their weight in gold. Time and Dedication. Plus you need to maintain composure during adverse situations. You know, breaking up fights without getting your own butt kicked Shocked

It should be against the rules to attack a moderator on the forum Angry

If you have a problem, Take it off line Wink

No resolution, Take it up with the board owned Sad

precisely, being a Moderrator, is something I just would want or Like, been an Admin at x-3dfx.com, the load was too much on my head, too many things go'n on at once and some other wierd stuff.

It's something not for me, you have to be prepaired for anything that comes your way and you have to be nutral, like not being on one's side and not on the other.

There must be a single strait neutral line in any case that occurs.

A moderator needs to be tough and hard. Taking a forum offline is not the solution. Removing messages (or editing) is not good either (unless it's a very bad message Tongue). I prefer an edit without removing the original message but adding a message with a warning or something similar.
If you want to have a good forum : Everybody should agree with each other and be nice.
Unfortunatly this is not possible 24/7.
Well, if someone exceeds a rule, show 'm the forum rules.
If he/she/it doesn't listen give he/she/it a short term ban. If that doesn't work simply ban him/her/it.

If someone is banned he/she/it knew he/she/it was wrong since he/she/it already received a warning ánd a short-term ban.
This will look like strict moderating, but sometimes that's neccesary.
Of course you'll need standard forum rules to apply this. A discussion must be possible since it could be interesting.
But a discussion knows it's limits, no personal attack or whatsoever...

Well, this is my opinion  Roll Eyes Tongue

exactly, also something that should of taken place else where....

anyways, Thandor is right, When I was Admin, I was prommised to get that acces, but it never came, so I was rather in a very cippeled situation.

Anyway that time has pased now, not of importance to me anymore, but it's still a good example of what can happen when in a crippled way of things, that wasn't pleasant for the Administration team as other users within the Forum.

Anyway, Maybe I was alittle too strict on things, I come from a strict life hehe, that is also an example of taking it too personal, so being an Admin nor Moderator takes lot's of skill to get things go'n in a neutral and stait line, keep out the fights, keep in the peace, keep it runn'n strait.

From what I have learned from being a Moderator and an Administrator, is that if you know hoe the system should work, it doesn't mean You now if it will work out and also it's doesn't mean you know how to BE an Administrator nor Moderator.

And Mr.G Donovan was one of the very few that knew the system on how it works and what was possible and what was not.

Nah, from an Admin point of view, this Forum has (mostly) been almost absolutely trouble-free.

Apart from a downtime caused by complete technical incompetence of a "not-to-be-mentioned ex-Co-Admin" (and I don't mean Gary), it never caused me too much work.

That's really the point I like best being Admin, for as long as it just works, it means no workload *g*

Community-wise, only two people managed to earn an eternal ban (which was well-deserved in both cases), so that's not too bad either.

Summing it all up, the Forum only had minor and infrequent times where it requires actual Moderation and even less often actual Admin intervention. Comparing it to other places, I'd even say it did quite well so far, I've seen alot worse happening elsewhere...

Still, I do intend to have the "Community" run the show (at least to the max. extend possible) and I won't be seen posting too often, since that's IMHO how it gives the highest Quality (diversity of opinions and offered Solutions to various questions).

Since I wouldn't want it to be a one-man show or even people being afraid to oppose my opinion just because of that "Admin" Tag (which I tried to remove numerous times but never managed to without screwing up the Forum Tongue ), I just keep my postings at a minimum and rather remain a silent observer until specifically being asked or something too interesting pops up and gets me to post...

It's true though, that I don't have as much time as I used to, work keeps me busy enough and often enough in my free time I plain prefer to just keep things running on the technical side but that's about it.

i'm late reading this thread... Embarrassed

but, gary has changed to guest's profile, i guess why not be just a member....

anyone know if gary has posted a "final" post?, or if he is still posting as guest?

because it's weird, in general, most of the users that "leaves" a forum, have posted (or have told it to a friend) a comment about it; so everybody will know about his/her decision....

PS: my english is not good, as usual  Undecided
PPS: we miss (and will miss, if your decision is to leave the 3dfx's forums) your nice words gary  Cry
i hope he will be back, he is a great guy!  Smiley
