Acronis True Image is simply the best.

I use Acronis True Image 9 on my Win XP Pro machine and my mom's Win XP Home machine with good results. One imperative is that you make sure to make your bootable CD-ROM with the exact same version that you use to create the backups because if you don't you will never get the restore to work.
I use Norton Ghost 2001 or 2002 on my Win98 boxes, also with good results.
Which backup programs were problematic for you, Gary, and what types of partitions were you trying to back up?

What are you going to backup? "only" data or your whole system?
If only data, robocopy is a NIIICE litte commandline tool from MS. In combination with CopyriteXP it gets a nice GUI which makes it ease to use.
It's ultra fast, reliable and best of all -> freeware
For a complete Sys Backup use acronis true image as mentioned before.

Trying to backup one drive the contains data and the Windows "Documents and Settings" user directory.
Some programs ignore data files while others have a problem with long file names or directories.

I'm actually in a similar situation. I need to find a way to backup just the My Documents folder, Mozilla Firefox, and Mozilla Thunderbird folders for a couple of users on my mom's machine. I need to make it a push-button process since the users are not too sophisticated. It would also be nice to be able to set up a push-button recovery process as well.
Tweakstone, I had a quick glance at the Wiki for robocopy, and it might do what I need. Thanks for the suggestion.

Robocopy really is a superb tool, you should also give it a try @Gary.
The CopyriteXP GUI creates a Batchfile in the end for every path you'd like to backup. Just copy the contents in one single batch inn the end and you got a nice little backup skript in the end, which can be easliy modified/extended in the future.
What also is VERY nice -> the tool compares the files to be saved with those already backuped. If they are 100% identical, it will skip these. So your Backup will become REAL quick, but still 100% reliable
