Title: FalconFly..... Kyro II question Post by jandarsun8 on 08.02.07 at 12:56:28
Putting this in general cuz it's not a 3dfx question. You mentioned in another post with Thrakath that you could modify a Kyro to work on a 1.5 AGP board.
"You cannot modify (as far as I know) the Card to actually run at 1.5V (as opposed to the Kyro2, where a mechanical workaround existed) due to hardware limitations.". This was true? I don't suppose you have any doc's on this do you? Just curious. I've got 4 Kyro's (a 32 meg Kyro I, a 32 meg Kyro II, and two 64 meg Kyro II's). I used to visit alot of the Kyro II forums (most are dead now) and I can't remember anyone ever bringing this up. If you happen to have anything on this, I'd love to see it. Next to 3DFX, the Kyro series of cards is the next card I'd love to see come back. |

There was a very well documented How-To on the Internet for the Kyro2, let me see if I can still find it.

I think that I can try to mod one of my four Kyro 2 @ Agp 4x ;)
Thanks :) |

yeah if this works, it opens up more motherboard options then we previously had. It's sad that the fan base has dropped off so much, I really thought they had something going there with those cards. They were great alternatives for some of us 3dfx fans that didn't want to go with Nvidia or ATI right away.

I have done the MOD to my KyroII and now it works to AGP4x. :)

I think that I'll use the Kyro 2 on my Pentium 4 2800... Kyro cards have the best 16-bit rendering that I ever seen :P |
Title: Re: FalconFly..... Kyro II question Post by TM30 on 11.02.07 at 22:59:27
cause Kyro always renders in 32Bit, even if you set 16Bit ::)

Because of time line issues, the Kyro III (series 4) was cancelled and the Kyro II SE was supposed to be sold as a stand over until the Kyro IV (series 5) was released. However STMicroelectronics/Imagination Technologies ran into some lincensing issues and STMicro did not renew the license agreement with Imagination Tech. Imagination Tech could not find a company willing to distribute the chip whole sale and the project was eventually scrapped all together. STMicro got the chip design from Imagination Tech and then created the reference boards to license out to Hercules and one other company.
This was the start of the downfall for Hercules because at the time Hercules was only supplying Nvidia cards and when they started selling the Kryo cards as well, Nvidia was not pleased because Hercules was marketing the card as direct competition with the Nvidia MX series (and beating them too). That's when Hercules tried working with ATI and had pushed out the Radeon 9700 and 9800 series of cards but with the legal battles with Nvidia, Hercules pulled out of the video card business all together. If you look at Hercules site now, all they deal with is sound recording equipment. |

A shame though, personally I always have like Hercules, their ATi Radeon 9700 Pro was the best of it's time togeather with the Tyan Tachyon 9700 Pro.
the 3D Prophet 4500 AGP has been misscorrected as a Hercules Voodoo4 4500 AGP many times since the cards bare almost the same name titles :) the 4500 AGP from hercules aka KyroII sold very well and it's imagequallity was like that of ATi but with the FSAA of 3dfx, it did have that kind of idea, only problem was the drivers in many cases the Kyro's were alot slower than the much faster 9500 and 9700 Pro cards back that time, for for everyday stuff they ruled they were great to make old games look brand new again. the KyroII was a very good alternative if you didn't want a 3dfx , ATi of NV sollution. |

Ah-ha, I did it! I got it swapped over and bios updated. It's now a 4x card. :) Just gotta reload windows on this box and try it out. ;D Bios see's it at a 4x agp card though so should be just fine.
