Banshee chipset overheating bug
04.09.05 at 13:38:55
What is known about this bug?
I have encountered severe overheating problems on an Intel 440BX chipset with the Q3D Raven AGP and with the Miro Hiscore PRO (these also have very similar pcb design)
When using this cards I usually put an 80mm fan over the card and I can use them normally
The big problem is that I "borrowed" the hiscore pro to my brother when he asked me "gimme one card, I need to chech someting in my sistem" and first thing I got my hands on was this card... after a while.. "damn it doesen't work anymore WTF is wrong" and I remembered this overheating bug issue, but sadly it was too late ( from now on he has a permanet ban on using/handling my cards due to lack of precaution (the chip was flaming hot)
)
So now I'm asking if anyone knows more about this bug, and what causes it.
(also... if anyone has a hiscore pro to sell he is very welcome, I can't live the loss of any part of my collection
)

I have heard of problems with later chipsets but never a BX, matter of fact I use 2 BX chipset boards for testing and the computer I'm posting with now has a BX chipset.

Caution
According to Quantum3D, 3dfx Banshee and Voodoo2 Chips contain a Bug which could cause them to overheat in modern Motherboards
(e.g. Pentium4 or AthlonXP based Systems)
This overheating effect has been observed to a lesser extend with the Voodoo3 as well.
It is assessed to be most critical on passive cooled Banshee Cards, where it can lead to thermal failure within one Minute of operation or less.
When using a such combination for the first time, leave the Case open and closely monitor Chip/Cooler Temperatures of the Card.

Well when doing a fist run with my Raven on 440BX it freezed sever times (I did an immediate shutdown few times) and had to add as I mentioned an 80mm fan over the card to make it run normally
My brother's system also has a 440BX based dual cpu mobo (but he instead of an immediate shutdown was trying to perform some supposed-to-be failsafe commands for several minutes (he runs slackware linux))
So both 440BX based systems have proven to cause severe problems.

Knowlege brings caution, knew that, that's what my immediate shutdowns were about.
But in a quick request I forgot to give some warnings

You may have another issue since the warning is in regards to modern P4 and AMD systems.
The BX chipset is a tried and tested platform for the Banshee and V3 chips.

Yes I tougt about that too, I'm familar with the BX's relyability , and also as I noticed no other banshee cards cause me problems on this mobo, it's just the raven and the hiscore pro wich as I mentioned have very similar pcb design.

@st4r4m4m4,
That's very strange as I have tested my Raven AGP (and 3 other of my Banshee cards) with an Asus P3B-F (Intel 440BX chipset) and have had no problems to speak of.

If the problem is only noted with those 2 boards and not others I suspect the problem is with the 2 boards not the motherboard chipset.
BTW- It's not uncommon for Banshees to run at 150F while under load which is normal (65C)

I've got a secondhand Creative Banshee PCI which probably ran for years at stock speed. It probably ran so hot that the PCB even changed from color.
Near the Banshee chip the PCB is getting brown.
Note that this card runs with a small passive heatsink.
Since the card is still working I assume that the chip can handle very high temperatures

My Compaq V3 1000 also has a similar overeating problem...
...before I attached a HSF and mini heatsink to the back of the GPU. 8)
But as @Gary noted, this only occurs in newer mainboards and not the BX boards!
