working computer....dies........
15.05.06 at 22:55:39
My working 475mhz k-6 was nicely putting along at 500mhz with my 32mb rage128 with tv out and 128mb of memory. I added a 40gb scsi drive and scsi pci card and a custom 2 fans spliced onto 1 wire. So i started it up. The fans pulsated a bit but evened out. Logged onto win98 finds the scsi card driver restart the computer. Only it never restarted. Just a nice blank screen. I previouslly tested the memory so the mem is ok. The processor was fine, it did the same thing with another one that I know works.
Any ideas???

Maybe the power supply is too weak so it can't handle the additional power used by the SCSI drive, the PCI-card and the fans.
Yes, I know it started at the first time but a PC does weirdest things when the power supply is too small dimensioned.

Too many fans = PSU overload...
...I know as it has happened to me before.
Just remove some of the fans - should boot fine again!

Change the PSU, or the power input. Check the power cord. Smell the PSU - if it smells of burned rubber - it's a goner. Also, try to lower the CPU speed with jumpers. Reset the BIOS (clear CMOS).

Im 99% sure it is the moptherboard. The dual fan was plugged into the mobo fan socket. The cpu and the fans were fighting for power and the fans won.

Could be.
Normal Motherboard Molex connectors are able to supply a max. of maybe 2.5 to 3 Watts.
Connecting a higher rated Fan (or two 'normal' ones that add up Wattage) can destroy the power regulator cuircuit responsible for the Fan power.
(e.g. most power-hungry Fans carry Warnings on them not to connect them directly to the Motherboard)

If your using a K6 board, chances are the power supply was between 150 to maybe 250 watts. I'd dump in a 300/350 watt and see what it does.

Was using a 200watt powersupply on the at slot. dont have an 300watt one hanging around anywhere. It has a slot for an AT power supply and an ATX power supply. I have no clue where to put a power switch on the board since atx power supplies dont have one built in. Heh... maybe ill find a motherboard at the town recycling center this saturday. Best part is the guy who works there says "IF it don't work, bring it back"
